Liam McBean

The problem with Our Saviour has been that just when he has hit a rich vein of form, he's copped an injury at the most inopportune time.

This article sums up Liam's dillemma as viewed by Hardwick. He does too much fancy stuff and he has simplified (richmondised) his game to marks goals defensive pressure. No lairisin'

Young Richmond forward Liam McBean says he’s working hard on deficiencies in his game, to ready himself for a potential opportunity at senior level.

While he has been hitting the scoreboard at VFL level in the last month, he has taken on board the feedback he has received from Damien Hardwick and the development coaches.

"The amount of goals I was kicking was probably the same amount I gave away from not being switched on defensively," he said of his form earlier this season.

"There's been stages this year where I've looked a little bit uncompetitive and I've spoken to 'Dimma' a lot about second and third efforts, just to show that desperation.

"'Dimma' has shown a lot of faith in me, and I've worked a lot on just changing my mindset and being more aware and not letting my defenders run the ball out of the backline."

Contested marking has been the other key focus for McBean, who acknowledged he needed to take more marks in pack situations or bring the ball to ground.

He said he had made an effort to simplify his football, which had been the main reason for his recent good form.

"Sometimes I try to do a little bit too much," McBean said.

"I've spoken to 'Clarkey' (VFL coach Tim Clarke) a few times about trying to keep inside the box.

"There were definitely times when I had shots on goal when I wasn't in the right spot and I'd try to do too much with the ball and wouldn't pick the right targets.

"Now my game is about marks, goals, and applying defensive pressure."

Recruited with pick No.33 in the 2012 AFL Draft, McBean was developing well as VFL level in his debut season last year, before he suffered a season-ending ankle injury.

Subsequent surgery restricted him through the pre-season and the 19-year-old's 2014 campaign was interrupted by a finger operation mid-year.

Despite that setback, McBean has booted 20 goals in the past five VFL matches to lead the goalkicking in the state league, with 33.

Thanks Lamby, good intel again, appreciate your efforts.

Again though there are two ways to interpret these statements.
1. Dimma doesn't like the "style" of play and has a natural bias against it and TC and LM just agree with his statements because they have to.

2. Liam kicks goals but costs goals too and this is a deficiency that is recognised by TC and LM and the rest of the selection panel.

The encouraging thing (for me) is that they have a clear role expectation of Liam and he seems to understand this and is working towards becoming that player.

Using the Hardwickian " Funnily enough" I find that discouraging.

Dimma has spent the last 3 years de lairisng Jack to the extent that he is nearly vanilla. Last year I think he scored only 3 or 4 goals from open play.

He gets a forward who can kick improbable goals and then takes away that asset because he sees it as a liability (typical double book accounting coaching).

Why would you want to debean the Bean?

ha ha, excellent work Lamby. If other teams wanna clog our forward line why wouldn't you put a 200cm rover in there to work magic in those confined spaces?

I know what your saying Lamby.. But how many players make a career out of that skill... and how many are 202cm..? i know your going to use that to counter argue... Dimma is using percentages.. I trust he has a better command of footy than 99% of us on here and is well aware of his freakish nature..

I for one would play him now, but its very easy to sit here and throw darts when in reality we don't have a true appreciation of whats actually required or happening at the club!

I can categorically say he would never be delisted.

My concern is when another club offers him, say, at least a chance at a senior game, and he goes to be a hundred goal a year forward for Hawthorn.

Apparently Jesus knocked over death ina coupla days and Our Saviour can't knock over a dodgy ankle in a year?

Beware false idols.

he's just a freakish type that falls in between Dimma's cracks. er ... yeah.

“I know the coaches know that he would go and kick goals playing in our AFL team, it’s just whether he could keep the ball inside 50 and compete."

I think this sums up the views of our coaches at Richmond. Liam just doesn't work hard enough to keep the ball inside 50. He has a bad habit of repetitively kicking goals, then those pesky umpires grab the ball and carry it outside 50 and bingo you've lost your forward press.

If Beanie can work hard to get that goal kicking thing out of his game he will be far more valuable to the team applying pressure in the forward press and keeping that ball inside 50. With any luck, at some stage somebody will rush a behind and we might actually win, however worst case with a perfect forward press nobody will score and we will have a draw.

Now if the results fall our way we may still sneak into 9th on percentage, what a great year that would be!

A 0.1.1 0.0.0 win would be the greatest moment of Dimma's life.

Absolutely spot on!!

Surely it is only a matter of time before they try and turn him into a defender.
