Kane McAuliffe

I'm confused by where Kane was ranked in the draft. Is fast, athletic, strong, good endurance, gets plenty of the ball, good at the coalface, nice penetrating left foot kick - seemingly with a good level of maturity and smarts.

He was ranked in top 20 early in year, then he had a really strong U18 carnival and somehow was ranked 40-60 in a draft that supposedly was not that strong. He must have some obvious flaws, I just haven't been able to find out what they are. Any ideas?

(Otherwise I'm loading up the bandwagon so we can all get aboard)!
Only reason I can think of is having a name like Kane and coming from Adelaide.

Cornesy will being going mental trying to think of an angle to keep rubbishing Richmond yet claim him as “his boy”.

The only flaw that I've seen really written about him is he can dump kick the ball forward, which is usually when he wins the ball at stoppage. When in space his kicking is not a problem (you can see that in his videos - similar in my mind to Graham - not as penetrating as some but a nice kick when in the open). The issue for me is composure when under pressure, this is something that can be trained into him, his underlying kicking isn't the issue, it seems its composure and decision making, which is why I'm optimistic that we've picked up another cog in the machine with Kane.
Sometimes better composure under pressure can come with better team systems. It helps when a player knows where support is.

Have a look at Robbie Tarrent when he first came to Richmond, releasing the ball too early and to bad choices because at North there was no sstem and support. Once he'd played 9 or 10 games his composure was much better as he used the support he had around him.

Have a good feeling about this lad, and look forward to watching him develop in the ressies. Only 18, a few more pre-seasons he'll be a unit.

Matt Clarke said we had him ranked in the 20s so that’s interesting. Also in that SANFL podcast posted on here, Kane mentioned that he’d worked really hard on his fitness, and that early in the year he ran a 7.00 something 2km time trial, and in the combine he ran 6.26 I believe. So to acknowledge a weakness and work super hard on it, love that kind of work ethic. Shaved a big chunk off his time trial! Can see him absolutely getting the best out of himself, and I hope that means he becomes a really good player for us

If he reminds me of anyone it’s our own Cumberland the way he moves but instead of being a forward he is a midfielder.

If he was ranked in the twenties then it was a bold play to trade down twice, this is one advantage to being unique I suppose and could set up a nice cache of players next year. If Clarke manages to net 3 core players from the 2023 second rounder it will super business, hopefully this is the start of a genius manoeuvre.

Just a pity those clubs after points are finals bound(Even suns).

Absolutely. This kid has "First Rounder" written all over him. I remember being happy with Sonz slipping to us but this pick feels even better.

Just on his size, Clarke mentioned one of the first things they'll do this pre-season is lose some kgs off him.

Said he's too big and they'll shred a few kilos then slowly build him back up.

Not many weights coming up for young Kane, but get ready to run.

I reckon he'll still do some weights, but I suspect they'll have set him a specific diet immediately with very few carbs but a lot of protein, and then as you say, there will be a lot of running / HIIT in the gym. Best way to lose weight fast and controlled is HIIT and limiting your intake of carbs.

What a beast.

Kano finished top 5 in the AFL draft combine 20 metre sprint, finished in top 5 in both the standing vertical jump and running vertical jump.
He ran the 2k in six minutes and 26 seconds which is not bad, the club will be setting up a program for him to improve on that.
Really looking forward to watching how Kano progresses.

Fitness will be the main concern. He wont have the tank to play AFL at this stage.

Some serious spin on that by Clarke. "We think he is in the 20's but traded back twice and risked it". Find it hard to believe. If Kane come good and is a role player and we get the same from the 2024 slide-back picks, you are right it's a genius maneuver.

Both of these posts are right but arguing different points. I don't expect to see the lad in the AFL next year and that's fine.

He's worth the punt. Weak draft, he's a good pick in the 40's to punt on.
