Kane McAuliffe

Pick #40
Expect little and if he develops his game its a bonus but has the athletic ability and size
lets see how well he develops but keep expectations low

He was under the crows nose and the selected not to take him with #27

Hopefully will be another Jack Graham scenario

Geez he speaks well. Nice little highlights tape too. I don’t know why, but got a really good feeling about this guy

Graham was a Larke medalist, probably a bit more advanced in his draft year. The player he sort of reminds me of is Dayne Beams, not quite the prolific ball winning ability but in style there are some resemblances.

I have a really good feeling regarding this pick. The young man speaks so well. Seems very switched on. So should be a fast learner. Also represented the state in cricket and basketball so has not given footy full focus yet.

Also Matt Clarke mentioned that he had a restricted preseason with injuries. If his running ability and power is effected surely this would have knocked his outside game around as he wasn’t as confident to gut run the extra as he didn’t have the petrol tickets.

So he has a basketball background? That’ll help the commentators for the next 10 years.

Really mature guy for his age by the sound of it. He reminds me a little of Matthew Arnot in the sense that he's been getting himself physically prepared to get drafted and been setting up life around footy to get the best out of himself. Both were very physical players.
Unlike Arnot however, he seems to have a pretty good amount of athleticism to go with the bulk. I'm gonna be interested to watch this guy develop.

I'm confused by where Kane was ranked in the draft. Is fast, athletic, strong, good endurance, gets plenty of the ball, good at the coalface, nice penetrating left foot kick - seemingly with a good level of maturity and smarts.

He was ranked in top 20 early in year, then he had a really strong U18 carnival and somehow was ranked 40-60 in a draft that supposedly was not that strong. He must have some obvious flaws, I just haven't been able to find out what they are. Any ideas?

(Otherwise I'm loading up the bandwagon so we can all get aboard)!

The only flaw that I've seen really written about him is he can dump kick the ball forward, which is usually when he wins the ball at stoppage. When in space his kicking is not a problem (you can see that in his videos - similar in my mind to Graham - not as penetrating as some but a nice kick when in the open). The issue for me is composure when under pressure, this is something that can be trained into him, his underlying kicking isn't the issue, it seems its composure and decision making, which is why I'm optimistic that we've picked up another cog in the machine with Kane.

A basketball background you say?
Nah, I doubt the commentators will even bother mentioning it…
How would you know? I dont think there are an guys in the AFL already who played basketball when they were younger.
