sheesh he played 2 good games and competed or tried in others and ferals are happy. a 4 possesion a game footballer is not good enough.
If it returns 3-4 goals a game it is. ;D

Re: Jay Schulz

He reallyhas to make a stand this year. Injuries are not an excuse anymore, there not massive injuries i put it down to lack of fitness.
He is pretty good when it comes down to hitting the *smile*!!

A broken ankle and a broken collarbone aren't big injuries in a sport where you need to run jump and crash into people?
Not if you're tigertough hey Bisket? You need to be decapitated and boiled in oil for an hour or two if you really want to claim an injury.

Re: Jay Schulz

WTG seabisket. Great memory retention.

I hope our club only has to deal with the injuries that aren't "massive" like Schulz has had to. Imagine if we got a real "massive" injury, we'd be well and truly stuffed. Praise the football gods!

/sarcasm off

Lack of fitness? Not big injuries?
How would you have gone under the weight of an Aaron Hamill tackle like Sarge was hit by?
They probably would have carried you out in a box.

Re: Jay Schulz

How can broken bones be from lack of fitness?
The reason he has had a lack of fitness is because of all the injuries.

I reckon he has heaps of ability but hasn't been able to stay on the park consistantly. He is a great mark, has a lovely kick, is a good size, has courage and moves around ok on the field. He has almost every attribute you want from a KPP except consistancy in finding the pill and durability. I reckon with a bit of luck and confidence he could still be a very, very good AFL player.

Agree Jaybone, but I just question his footy education (nous). By this I mean he is often found between the kicker and marker, is often the chaser and not being chased, and rarely seems in a position to be an assist. In AFL today, the biggest difference between players is between the ears we are told - well sadly this might just apply to Jay. As Clawsy rightly says, a four possy game not a player maketh! It does take longer for these positional pennies to drop for some blokes (I oughta know ;D). I think that was mainly why his game was channelled to half back - for educational purposes. He didn't get much time there though thanks to injury. Hope it all comes together for Jay this year!

Re: Jay Schulz

When I saw Schulz the first time, only one name came into my mind, "Jimmy Jess".

Shulz runs, leaps & marks, and kicks well like Jess, without of course Jess's signature torpedo.

Many of you will remember Jess arriving at Tigerland in '76 a raw kid at 21yo.
I remember a game that year, at Lakeside, where Jimmy & Stewart Gull spent the day beating crap out of each other. I think Jimmy, at FF, may have kicked 3 or 4 goals.

'77 saw that magnificent cameo of Jimmy's famous last quarter against the Hawkers, with those 3 speccies & goals. He did little else for the season, although he did play at CHF in the finals when Clokey had to go into in the ruck.

In '78, Bones tried him at FB with little success.

In '79, TJ experimented with him at CHB. It took him half a year to learn the position, and he made alot of BIG errors in the learning process. By the 2nd half of the season he'd clicked.
That made Jessy 24yo when he clicked. He'd played 4 seasons of footy.
(Funny, I always say talls should click by 24. ;) )

Schulz didn't come to Richmond as a 21yo. He arrived at the club at a mere 17yo, and debuted at 18.
He turns 22 in this 2007 season.
That speccy & 6 goals against Brisbane, some time ago, reminded me of that '77 Jess cameo.

Schulzy will make it.
I'm not sure whether it will be as a forward or defender.
But he'll make it, at least as a FF, possibly more.

Schulz is 21, and is contracted to end of 08 - fair enough KPP take longer development time so if he hasn't improved his consistency in 44+ games of opportunity, then trade or delist.

On the other hand Moore is 23 and is still on the list.... Limbach was delisted at 19....

fair call. whilst i'd love to see kelvin come good, i was very surprised he wasn't delisted last year.

it annoys me that people defend him yet have a go at the 20yr old jackson who has shown genuine potential at senior level.

on the schulz front i definitely believe he can play at both ends. his accurate kicking for goal gives him a bit of an edge in the forward line, however IMO he will spend a bit of time in the backline until the big man retires

Thanks for the info Phantom. It's good to hear these little facts from someone a bit older and experienced than me.

Even though *smile* resembles Jess nowadays with that golden beard he's grown, I always thought that he would've been best developed as FF and had Richo not been playing by now, he would've definately clicked.

I've posted many times that *smile*'s career development has been held back more because of Richo's dominance in attack.

jimmy jess was the "grey ghost" , maybe jay could be the "golden ghost" :rofl

Re: Jay Schulz

I sometimes wonder whether the development of young KPP players such as *smile* is not hampered by the fact that once they hit the AFL system they are encouraged to be more versatile and play at both ends of the ground. I don't think every big bodied kid that comes into the system has the ability to do both roles. From my point of view, Schulz has always been a Key Forward and should have never been played down back during his first few years at the club. I am not saying that having some big boys who can do a cameo role at the other end of the ground on occasion is not important. In fact, I think it's a vital ingredient for success. All I am saying is that I don't think every big kid who comes onto our list needs to be able to play at both ends of the ground. The club needs to get smarter at who they target for these roles. Let's hope that boys like Hughes and Thursfield are allowed to learn their craft in one position before being sent all over the ground!

Massive call with a intresting case to support it.

Ive said it once and ill say it again (even if it does hurt me to say it) but Jay Schulz seems to me to be a victim of the Richo orientated era. Luckily he is 21 and has time.... but the amount of times ive seen players ignore Jay on a great lead for Richo in a contest is disturbing....for me Jay is a better kick and possibly could be a better mark than the great man...however i think his time will only come when Richo has finished up :'(

To suggest Schulz is a better mark than Richo is folly bordering on bizarre.
Contested or uncontested Richo is in an elite category.

Jay still has it all ahead of him in my opinion.
His few cameos have teased the senses, but he has also been disappointing many times.
I reckon he is a tryer, but needs to add a new level of desperation to his game.
He comes across a little as an ambler who takes the game in his stride.
I'd like to see some vengeance in his attack on the footy.

Agree. Has some of the tools, but the application is what's missing imo. Turns it off and on too much.

I've got this theory on people like him who get around half shaven all the time: they're lazy.

Notice you didn't argue on the kicking though struggler. ;)
