Jack Ross

If he was such an inside bull wouldn't that reveal itself at training? Or do none of the coaches see what his ardent supporters on here see? It's pretty pointed that despite half the midfield team missing he struggles to get a game.

Like Ezy said, not quite up to standard.

Like Ezy said, not quite up to standard.
His form from early season 2019 shows he can clearly play to the standard, as the video clip above shows. Whether he can do that on a regular basis remains to be seen but I liked what I saw on Friday.

I also think that our coaches have erred badly in the way they have used him this year. He has been medical sub on numerous occasions and has had no footy continuity because of it. They have also tried to turn into something he is not.

I hope he makes it but of course he may not. I just think we have a great opportunity to give him an extended run in the midfield and find out the answer.

Yeah I want him to succeed because he clearly wants it so much.

But I would argue that an AFL standard is being able to perform week in week out.

Thats almost impossible to achieve considering the lack of continuity he has had in his football.

Only Hardwick can answer why it is that he wants Ross of HB when its clear that we need another inside
mid but here's just a little reminder of an 18yo Jack Ross in action, a player some are so keen to condemn.

Watching that clip again I see a different player to what I see now. I saw dancing feet and quick clean 360 degree handballing from congestion. He's not an up and down running, long kicking winger or half back. He's an inside, gather, pivot and dish off inside mid. Dimma and the coaches need to re program him back to what he is.

In my tradition of backing blue-collar players like Lambert and Baker early I'm going to back Ross in. The rest of this season will tell the story.

Surely age is a factor here.

Otherwise Bolton hasn't been AFL standard this year.

Ross is a Shane Tuck type, but better. Will get better with age. He is a good user, has great vision, he's tough, he's strong, and he's not slow, no matter how many times some people say he is. He runs all day. He is the kind of player that thrives with consistency.
He's no Dusty, Bolton, Stack. He won't be an excitement machine. But he could be a Nathan Jones type for us. You can build a midfield around him. You just need to have Bolton in that midfield too.

Had 8 disposals in the third quarter alone which coincidentally, was when we started putting some distance between us and Brisbane on the scoreboard. Finished with 16 for the match from about two and a half quarters worth of work. All that playing on the wing too.

If some of our other kids of similar age and positional ability had that kind of game, PRE would collectively explode from excitement.

The lesson from 2017 was to play to players' strengths. I think we have lost sight of this a bit.

Put him where he is best and see how he goes. Plus, remember how few games he has played.

Hope you're right, Burg. I'd love him to take the next step.

They were better than blue-collar early IIRC. At least Baker was. I can't really remember early lambert that well, although leysy did give him the lablett moniker pretty early so he must have showed something pretty special.

I had written Ross off as well but his game on Friday showed flashes of what he can become. Agree with others that it is confusing as to why they refuse to give him game time in the guts. Probably been the one player that has had his continuity and development hindered by continually being the sub and positional changes. Perhaps they are trying to build his tank and lift his confidence by getting his hands on the ball playing out from the back. Perhaps some defensive awareness as well and then they will unleash him in the middle. Can he make it as a HBF or Winger long term. Don't think so. Can he make it as a midfield stoppage machine. More likely. Either way if he can continue his form of Friday we may have just found another player in this injury plagued season

So was Ross. His first few games were fantastic and had us all thinking we have found an absolute star bull. I would say i was more excited by Ross' first few games than Baker's.

I saw glimpses Easy. He's a blue-collar brother of the likes of Marlion, get on board!!

I hope he punches my ticket in the near future,

but for now, I'll wait for the next bus.

and I don't want to run the bloke down, so I'll keep my thoughts close to my chest

There probably hasn't been to many kids his age have to try and bust in to a midfield that's won back to back flags after being recruited.
Not sure whether its impacted him mentally but he also missed out on playing in a VFL GF win to be an emergency for the AFL GF which he was also made emergency for Marlion in the space of a week.
Just about everyone around him playing in a premiership victory and he had to sit and watch twice over whilst perfectly healthy.
That can't have been an easy pill to swallow.
