Ivan Soldo

For those VFL/track watchers - what is Soldo's aerobic capacity like?

If he plays ones it will be tested like never before if he plays Griffs role.

Unlike most second rucks (who rest deep forward before taking there turn on ball) Griff actually reverts to a lead-up role so Jack can play deeper.

He either gets to a lot of contests or makes space when he doesn't. His pressure is also very good for a big man.

If Soldo has the fitness to run the game out - bring him in. If he doesn't he could prove a real liability.

Love the way Soldo is developing but I'd think he would be a better plan B if Nankervis gets injured or needs a rest than as a CHF. Much more like Nank in terms of playing style than BG.
Elton or Chol a better fit in that 2nd forward spot.

while I agree he is making very good progress he is NOT ready to play at AFL level he is just starting to cop with the VFL level, I don't think we can afford to either Ivan's in the team as we will look to slow....

the way they have selected the teams so far im sure there will be some "didn't see that coming".

Maric is there for when all ruck stoke are gone - Nank and Hampson inj then Maric plays
Ty spot when to Griff with Chol in the wings Elton.

Soldo is huge, stood next to him at the 3/4 time break on the field at Punt road (you can go on the ground like the old VFL days and listen to the coach, really cool) and he was considerably taller and bigger than his cousin Ivan. He moves well for a 204cm BIG man, 106kg and for an ex basketball player (only took up AFL 2-3 years ago) he is developing very nicely. Slightly awkward kicking but seems to kick them straight!

Interesting to see who they select (and possibly drop apart from Edwards and Griff) come Thursday night.

You're right about the need for run, Leyeser, but it won't be the replacement who provides it.

Griffens does spend a lot of his time deep. That's the Griffens job that Soldo can fill. And he spends time in the ruck. Again Soldo can do this. Hitting the ball on the lead at the arc or wing? Soldo can't do it. Will never be able to.

But holding his ground in a pack? Soldo is already a better player than BG. Plucking the ball in a marking contest? Soldo much better. Getting out the back? Soldo is classes above. Already. Actually kicking the goal? Soldo. Rucking in the forward pocket? Soldo yet again. All the deep work except chasing? Soldo is better. And Soldo is ok on the short leads. Deep work.

So. Who will replace Griffens in the high work? Jack. Because Martin will replace Jack in most of the deep work. We play Jack high again. (It'll help him find form anyway.) And Jack is miles better at CHF than Griffens.

The thing is that we can't guarantee Soldo's performance because inexperience. There's only one cure for that. But there is a risk. And BTW his tank needs the challenge.

For this week at least, particularly with our forced new forward structure, we should have an advantage with Griffens replaced.

FWIW I'm ok with going in with no tall replacement this week. We'd be a moral to win. But that's not a long-term solution and that's what we have to work on.

A vote for Soldo is a vote for the future. And the future is this year.

That's where I have doubts about him at AFL level. Maybe more experience in VFL would be better for now as time is on his side.

If anyone can transition more successfully it's ex basketballers and tall guys. Been a few good talls who knew nothing about footy a few years beforehand. But still a relatively long-shot.

Fair enough brother, think you sell Griff ability to bring the ball to ground from a pack situation short.

Interesting to see if Soldo gets a gig - think Elton is a moral on the grounds that Soldo's tank must be a big Q mark.

Griffens is an AFL player, Leyser. When he runs and jumps he can touch any air ball. I'm not suggesting otherwise. And yeah, Soldo's tank is in question. Much less so Elton's. So Elton may get the gig. (I don't hate Elton - I'm one of the few - but I hate him forward.)

If there's a new meritocracy in place four-goal Soldo gets the gig. (Soldo kicks goals. Much moreso than Griff at VFL level. Laps ahead of Todd. And Soldo rests forward.) Likewise if there's an eye for the future. (The future can be this year.)

By the end of 2016 Soldo was our reserves #1 ruck. He'd improved from truly category B at the start of the year. And he's improved again this year. I don't care if he bombs. Let him taste it.

Apparently Soldo only kicked 2.

Apparently the VFL reporter Gillette confused him for Brandon wood (57) 186 cm a couple of times.

they're probably trying to get the umpire directors job.

What makes things interesting is that if Soldo does come on and show something and develop into a competent ruck, his trade value becomes a pick inside 50.

It's a rort, no one wans to develop rucks so bringing them via the rookie list is the best way. Look what did for Nan's Crevice, it was a steal.

No way you should be able to get a former U18 All Australian Ruck with a pick in the 40's. I'm all for throwing this big lump in and making him better.
