Ivan Soldo

Yes, Hampson was added to the Long Term Injury list so there is a slot there. We had 2 slots come round 1 (Yarran spot and Hampson spot). One spot went to Castagna, the other is there to be filled. May have another spot depending what they decide to do with Griff.

One rookie spot to fill, but Chol presumably unavailable this week to fill it. They may well take a longer-term view of flexibility and bring Maric in for this week until the situation becomes clearer.

He's gone past the iVan ITBHO but I can't imagine Dimma having the courage to select him.

Good call, TBH. Maric has been named as an emergency in the first two rounds but Soldo's rapid development and form in the VFL practice matches has put the pressure on the match committee.

The thing I'd least like to see this weekend is the scenario I think Dimma is most likely to advocate for. Nank to spend time forward and Maric to do a large portion of the rucking. Personally I'd prefer Soldo got the nod. The last few years have been incredibly sad for Maric and the club. Remarkable to think that there could be another chapter added for that failed union in Round 3, 2017. If Soldo is selected, it will be because Dimma is overruled IMO.

Mercifully, Natanui and Lycett will be at home convalescing rather than competing in the high stakes game at the G on Saturday. Hopefully, the fact they're unavailable is used as a reason to reward Ivan Soldo's impressive VFL form rather than throw yet another lifeline to old Ivan Maric.

If Soldo does play, everyone needs to be prepared for a few shanks, a few turnovers, and a couple of getting losts. He'll do those sort of things, that Maric wouldn't.

He also may take some big grabs, provide an advantage in the ruck, and kick a couple of goals. More things Maric probably wouldn't.

I'd pick Soldo in the interest of :
- upside
- ruckwork
- athleticism
- forward marking option

The argument to play Maric would be:
- experience
- neat skills
- knows his limitations
- will know exactly what he needs to do at all times

Importantly, if Soldo plays, we need to be aware it's just phase 2 in a long term development.

Compare Soldo's first game last year, to his first this year, and he's changed from a guy getting the number of possessions and hit outs you could add together and then count on one hand, to a guy who could feasibly come in this week ahead of Maric.

But he still has a bit of the baby giraffes about him, and the skills can be a little shaky. He's about four or five years off his prime, but is now an option. Wouldn't have said that last year.
Maric is that far gone though I'm prepared to chance it , he may very well clunk a few marks deep and come up trumps , we know that has well past Ivy

The other consideration is that beyond this week we would rather upgrade Chol so for this week Maric gets the gig until Griffens future is clearer.

If we want to keep the same structure (we will) can't see any other scenario but Elton playing for Griff TBH.

If we don't play Elton this weekend he can assume he's been McBean'd by the club.

Agreed. And what a disgrace it would be after 5 years.

I assume he has had stints in the ruck in the vfl ? Nank will need a rest at times

Time to be bold - kicked 4 in the VFL and is in form - could he play a defensive air position (whatever that is ;D) where he follows McGovern around and his aim is to simply neutralise McGoverns marking and he simply try's to bring the ball to ground.

For us to win on Saturaday we need to
1) match the Eagles midfield in output - possible
2) limit Kennedy to his MCG average - we can do that
3) limit McGovern marking and rebound game - tough

1 - Our mids play well, add in Miles for one more extractor
2 - Rance needs to nullify him and not try intercept everything.
3 - Dumb football will deliver the ball to MCGovern, don't play dumb football.,

Soldo is the go. Failing that, Elton.

I'll spew if they go Maric.
