Ivan Soldo

Soldo changes the way we play.

I am not sure if he any better than Shaun Hampson, but I guess the key difference is, he is a second ruck, not the 1st ruck.

The Nank/Soldo pairing is one of the most intriguing things in our 2019 premiership pursuit.

Not sure how I feel about it

Watching the replay (again!) and the sublime Rioli crumbing goal in the 2nd quarter.

Daniel takes the footy and runs, and Ivan instinctively looks to shepherd anyone chasing Rioli.

Shai does the same thing later in the game, creating space for an easy goal.

Our Team First mentality is something to behold. It's not about stats, and nobody cares who gets the goal. It's all about the win.

Didn't used to be like this, I can remember back in the bad old days when I'd be genuinely shocked to see a decent 1%'er for an entire game!

Noticeable with Drioli's first charge into our F50 when he tried to set up his bro, Shai, with a pass over the top for a mark but for some reason, it didn't quite work. Personally I wanted Dan to just keep on running and kick the goal.
Which is exactly what he did next time, but Shai did the team thing and laid a great shepherd that enabled Dan to even fumble a bounce, recover it then drill it home. TFM - Great to see!

What an improved footballer, is the Soldoofus , love his commitment and his footy nous has improved tremendously

You never wish a footballer to get injured, but Nank going down turned out to be a blessing in disguise, soldo has added a new dimension that has made us more dangerous and unpredictable

He has de-risked out September somewhat, neutralizing a key weakness against the top rucks in the comp (which invariably turn out to be in the top half dozen teams)

I remember being amazed when I saw Ben Cousins running to shepherd for a teammate.

And how he would draw the opponent before he handballed.

Now everyone does it 100% of the time, even our category B ruckman.

Looking at the hitouts from last weekend you can plainly see the we were the most balanced Ruck department with Soldo 25 and Nank 24.

Geelong have a fairly even spread too - Blicavs 14 and Ratugolea 10.

Eagles are very obviously NicNat centric - NicNat 24 and Hickey 13.

But Collingwood and GWS are basically just a one man band with Grundy 47 and Mumford 35.

There were parts of last weeks game that I expected more from in the Ruck especially their scoreboard pressure but then I noticed they were mainly used to fill the hole down back instead of providing an extra marking presence in the forward line.

Makes complete sense when you have a forward line that already has 2 marking talls or even when it morphs into a one on one Dustymare!

Soldo's rise is astounding and gets my Most Improved vote this year.

Nank has pulled up very well and looks to have covered his injury. He'll be much better for the run and the extra week recovery will prime him well to come out firing in the Prelim.

So maybe its time for us to capitalise on our new Ruck duo.

Should we finally go down the path of adding an extra clearance player like Ross and/or god forgive me... Pickett? ;)

It would mean a little sacrificing of our much loved outside run but it would maximise our first use around the ground and ultimately fix a vital KPI hole in our game. Clearances!!!

TBH, I dont think we would lose anything! you know who I'm talking about right....

Our game is already successful even without clearance domination but now that we have what looks to be a formidale rucking doublet, adding Clearances to our game would surely boost our chances even further.

The big question is, will we make that leap now in the scary depths of September?
our biggest area for improvement is stopping the opposition kicking to a marking contest on the half forward and wing. Stop that and the extra pressure we place on them will break them.
I saw signs of it in our forward line, both Jack and Tom took the rucking allowing our genuine ruckman to guard the ground further up. I think this is super strategy.

Watching the replay, a couple of Soldo's taps were extraordinary. Flew one way and tapped another.

Yep one to Cotchin in the first (that led to a Shed goal) was important as it was sandwiched in between Brisbane's mini run of goals.

Another to Prestia (more a clearance and give) also silver service.

I think Soldo's main benefit is as a disruptor. If he stops the otherwise dominant ruckman doing his thing he has done half the job already.

BTW did we love the recall the bounces that favours Richmond and allow the ones that favours Lions on Saturday. Dusty was onto that and let the umps know about it!

I agree! The thing about Nank and Ivan is their different ruck play. That's what we need. Ivan is improving each week and Nank can only get better in fitness. We need to stick with this combination.
I am not so sure..Nank looks way down on fitness and in the second half was hardly getting off the ground. That sort of performance and he would be monstered by Nic Nat, and if we get past West Coast, by Grundie in the final.
I would prefer Chol, who is as fast as these two and as good a jumper.

Chol is no chance. Pretty sure Tigers have already indicated we'd need Soldo and Nanks against West Coast if they were to make it. Natanui is ridiculously over-rated. He's taken just 4 marks in his 4 games this year. He's a good flashy player but nothing we can't handle as a team.

This. Soldo may not dominate a game but he won't let the opposition ruck dominate. He's strong as an ox who can hurt and keeps going. His contested work and hands in tight have improved, just needs to have more confidence going for his marks.

Just another way the maggots screw us over. No need for them to pick a dodgy free kick out of their dates or become too obvious with the free kick differential. Play on when the opposition ruck gets an uncontested tap down the throat of his mid. Unfair bounce, recall, when it looks like going our way.
Just another tupperware rule invented to pretend to eliminate the obviously unfair advantage from a crooked bounce, except the maggots are unable to correctly adjudicate it as usual.. Time to kill the bounce n just throw the ball up, hopefully reasonably straight.
