Ivan Maric

He fought his way back from what looked like a towelling early. Got crucified by the umps - what was that free against him for jumping at the ball at a centre bounce? ???

I saw a lot of weird rucking free decisions across all games. Must have been a focus week for ruck contests. What's just as annoying is how many times umpires stuff up center bounces these days. They keep getting recalled. Maybe time to remove the bounce all together (except maybe the opening bounce - and get the best umpire proponent to do it). One day a game where a team is down by less than a goal is going to waste the valuable time needed to retrieve and bounce the stupid thing again.

The one I was referring to came early in the third quarter. The bounce favoured Martin but gave Ivan a run at it. Martin stuck his leg out while Ivan just jumped as normal. If anything it should have been a free to Ivan. He was gobsmacked.

The best Maric style ruckman in the AFL is Stefan Martin. Not only is he better than Maric he's bigger, stronger, younger, more athletic etc. A much bigger unit. Oh and he's comparatively sound. (Our bloke can't walk - looks like a back to me). Not surprisingly Martin towelled our man up in the first half.

I can't believe how many eggs Hardwick has in the Maric basket. Wow. Maric is a geriatric crock. But right now there is only Hamster ready to go if Maric succumbs.

But back to the duel, I thought Maric at least held his own in the second half. He wore the other bloke down with sheer will. It was great to watch. Leppitsch said as much in his post match.

Maric is a problem for us. We are definitely a better side when he plays but he will not be able to play 24 games (hoping we do) in a season given how much he has demanded of his body.

There is no like for like replacement. Hampson a better tap ruckman but not as good as an overall package.

How is Dimma going to manage this

If Vickery actually fired-up and played some bloody decent aggressive footy, much of this speculation would be redundant.

We ran Ivan into the ground.
Lack of support and playing him injured has came back to bite us.

Best case would be what happened to Benny Gale who at around 27 realized he was a ruckman trying to play CHF. Only a few years to go all . ;D

Benny was later asked about his transition from forward to ruck and he credited Allan Jeans with it. Until Jeans arrived at the club Benny said he'd never even been tried in the ruck, he actually didn't think he could play there.

Funny how it was KB asking that question. :hihi

Missed our chance Dyer'ere.

Lions got him for bargain basement picks 53 & 73, while we traded pick 28 for Hampson :p

Yesss.

And he went from go -

So assuming the worst, and I love Eevahn, pray nothing happens to him, who would we be looking at? At least until one of TV, Hamster or Soldo get their acts together. Are there any ruck men n the verge of beast mode ready to don the yellow sash?

This one doesn't get aired often, Tommy. :-[ That Hamster deal was real bad. Not quite a Pavlich/Franklin disaster but bad.

We should start with Leuenberger, PJ. He's a free agent.

I remember his answering it years ago. A few of the players who played under both KB and Jeans mentioned Jeans' influences on their careers, but I never heard anyone mention KB's.

Gotta give phantom a rap, he argued long and hard to have a go at Martin at the time, (I agreed mainly due to the bargain price and the fact he was a baby in ruck years) he got that one right. I met him too, he does good youth work, good bloke.

Always love your posts Dyer'ere. However I am not sure you are 100% on this one. Martin is only 197cm and 100Kg so he is actually smaller then big Ivan. He is, however, far more athletically gifted. We have had great service from Ivan. Melbourne traded Martin because he was a chronic underachiever - he has only played 77 games in 10 years. He "clicked" last year in a big way and he is now the form ruck man of the competition at 28 yo.
I reckon both Hammer and Vickery still have time. In particular Hammer's recent form in the VFL has been very good and is starting to have a presence around the ground. I think people's assessment of him based on last year's form was correct but may not be this year (hopefully). Incidentally people will say the Hammer butchers the ball when he gets it but Martin incidentally leads his club for clangers this year, and he has quite a few to compete against in the current Brisbane team.

part of Martin clicking was the he became a full-time ruck for the 1st time and thrived.

the 2nd ruck position is a very hard one to fill, unless you get a Ryder type you are basically getting someone to play 2nds unless your 1st ruck is injured.

Both TV and Griff could be invaluable because of this. they can play forward and they can ruck. jury is out though whether they are good enough.
i reckon this influenced our decision to recruit Hampson. we thought he could play forward. this has proven to be folly. i havent given up that he can be good enough as a ruck, but he can never play with Maric.

Lueyburger is the same. If we got him he, or Maric, would play VFL. if Maric is shot it is probably worth it. If he still has a couple of years in him then one is wasted.

tough gig, list management.
