Ivan Maric

Hey Leysy, it should be interesting to see Maric v Seaby this weekend. If my memory serves me correctly you would have preferred the Sydney ruckman over the big Croat?

Great that Crazy Ivan is in great form,However there has to be some point in the season where we can give him a rest,Week before our bye is probally our best option.

I agree with you, and was thinking the same thing. But Ivan was interviewed after the GWS practice game and he was filthy that he got subbed in the second half, imagine if that was for premiership points? I wouldn't be the one telling him he had to sit out for a week!

Yeah thought Seaby might have been a mega cheap ruck to get in & make us competitive in that area.

Maric has been a revelation thus far though, dont think even his biggest supporters would have predicted the form he has shown.

You really preferred Seaby to Maric? I'm in shock.

Didnt think there was much between them. Wasnt really bullish either way with maybe a slight leaning to Seaby at the cost from memory.

Seaby would have served a purpose as he has done over the past two weeks for Sydney. Maric did more than that in the weekend so it looks to be good work by Hartley ATM.

Bellchambers is arguably the best ruckman in the comp at the moment.
I reckon Ivan is up for it. Hit him, and hit hard all night, and we are a big chance to win.
A critical contest.

If this guy stays healthy and none of the other 3 improve out of sight and get to his level over the Summer then looks like a great trade to me.
I figure we will be on average a 3-4 goal better team immediately because.
- He can consistently compete in the ruck which stops on average about 8 embarrassing breakaways for the opposition per game which usually results in 1-2 goals per game (3 or 4 scoring shots) and the other few times it just puts the ball in the opponents forward half. That was the norm in 2011.
- It allows Vickery to play forward 75% of game time which is great for our forward line and his development. (1 goal extra per game average there) If Griffiths comes along in his 3rd year as I expect then having a 3 prong tall attack (with a healthy Riewoldt) could be massive and prove an even greater advantage.
- It means Cotchin, Martin and friends will get more clearances and again the ball will then spend more time in our forward half. (1 goal extra per game average there) and the midfielders will not have to be on complete "defensive mode" like they were this year.

If we just have a competitive healthy ruckman in 2012 (whether it is Maric, Graham, Derrickx, Browne or whoever) and Vickery gets left to play up forward I think everyone will be shocked at how much more competitive we are as team. Our ruckwork in 2011 was absolutely disgraceful and inadvertently effected so many of the teams performances it was a joke. We just need to be competitive so our young superstars can win one-on-one contests or at least break even. This year there were so many times they were not even getting a chance it was ridiculous.

And best of all. If this guy is a nice neutral ruckman, he is ours for another 4 years because of his age which suits the other 2 younger rucks perfectly.

So please, Ivan, just stay healthy, and don't be a spud.

I think I may have underestimated Ivan. You could argue he is making a bigger impact than 3-4 goals per game.

For sure. Not only has he stopped “the embarrassing breakaways” but he creates two or three the other way.

I just love the way he runs hard to the defend the dangerous space. And nothing is done easily, he is not a gifted athlete. But he works his backside off the ground. Rucking solo today, when he did come off for a short break (what was his TOG? was it up? felt like it) he was cooked. Ran himself into the ground. But his ability to creative when he has the ball has just shocked me. Very good by hand and a neat kick.

The Ivan Maric era has started better then anyone could have predicted. If Maric played at Hawthorn the would be flag favourites. A lot of clubs will be wondering why they never got involved for him.

I remember the Dogs game last year after we had beaten the Dockers - I was super confident we would win and was so disappointed we lost. The main reason was Angus couldn't win a tap and if he did it went straight to a Doggies player - he was dropped the next week.

I still can't get used to us being so competitive in the middle and breaking away with the ball from the centre and that is mainly due to Big Ivan's fantastic work.

I always knew looking at our ruck woes last year that with a decent and competitive ruckman it would improve our stocks dramatically.

Had a few doubts about Eevan the terrible when we went after him. Happy to be proven totally wrong. The big fella's certainly be a ripping addition to our team.
