".......... long flight, ........"

Sorry

I just want to seize/comment on this..............

To be honest - any reference to 'long flight' when talking about a flight to WA (or return) is rather laughable.

Against the wind it's 4.5hrs and with it it's 3.5.

Sit there, watch a movie and a couple of episodes of Modern Family/Big Bang theory - and your done!

How this becomes/has become an excuse for footballers is gobsmacking!

NO - I'm not an elite sportsperson - but I do this flight several times a month - and aside from catching the red-eye (totally different story) catching a plane to Perth during the day is far more relaxing than a day in the office!

Beejeezus - FIFI guys do it on a weekly basis.

I do understand that the TZ difference (and some of the other points about WA - large ground / hard surface) might all combine to provide challenges - but seriously? the 'long flight' to WA is not much tougher than sitting on the couch for 4hrs!! (PS - I'm 6 foot 2')

You may disagree.

I think with elite athletes it has an effect on their recovery and performance, much more so than for us average Joe's where peak physical performance is not such an issue.

Also with Eevan Maric, we are referring to it in the context of a man recovering from back injury, so might be dicey.

Take it easy, champ.

You know what registers when you say we win the hit outs but lose the clearances? Exact confirmation of what I see during the game. Hampson is an athletic big bloke who can jump, but is probably the single worst footballer I have ever seen. He gets his hand on it, but has no idea how he's done it, panics, and hits randomly. Our blokes set up as they would for a real ruckman, and get confused when their own ruckman hits it away from them.

But you know what? I meant no sarcasm when I said we should play an extra midfielder. Nic Nat can't grab it out of the ruck, because if he's tackled immediately, it's an automatic holding the ball. Get a mid to stay down wait for him to land and tackle him, and have an extra runner in the centre.

Or if that's too out there, get Vickery to do the same.

All better look options than Hampson.

OK, but what bothers me about some of the posters here is the reflex bagging of players often in scant regard for the actual game they've played. Hampson is the biggest target here in that respect. Anyone can see his drawbacks, a giant athlete but not a natural footballer, unco, clumsy. And I have posted long ago that I was really annoyed we spent the pick on him; I had a young player in mind that will probably be a 10 year player for Brisvegas now.

However, had to bite the bullet and consider the club believed we had to have a solid ruck back-up (you know the reasons I'd say). Hampo has had few games, very little continuity at AFL level because of how Eevan has been so reliable and stood up, his own injuries etc.
Now he is getting some games due to fortune. I have seen numerous ruckman over the years become players because of this situation. They had to take over No.1 spot. They had to go out and compete for most of the game on a tough, seasoned big man who would crunch them if not up to it. From the old days, with Swampy Patterson to Balmy, Salmon at Dons and Hawks. Currently look at examples of Martin at Lions, Pike at Swans, or Mummy at GWS, Stanley at Cats et al.

I think many people are reluctant to concede Hampo has been useful/competitive in 2016. He seems to be improving; I pointed out before last game that he might do better than last time against Jacobs because he needed ops on both ankles in the off-season. What happened, to the surprise of most, he beat him in the ruck. But then his attackers say he was hopeless because we lost the clearances, like both are totally his blame.

It seems many here want him to keep failing to keep their accumulated posts intact, justify themselves or something.

You can find plenty to criticise him for, resent that he actually can ruck after all in contravention of your established heckling, but there are plenty more players who share responsibility for the disgraceful loss to Pies and Turnover Kings performance against Crows.

I, for one, was rapt with the improved efforts and steps forward he has made with the responsibility thus far. I think Eevan will come back when fit and ready, especially suited to when the conditions slow down with wetter weather, softer grounds.

Re your other ideas, as someone else has posted TV is just so unconvincing in the ruck and looks intimidated which Hampson doesn't at all. Trying to just shark Nicnat's HOs would simply enable him to direct them easily out wider to an outside runner for an easy clearance IMHO.

Hampson is a spectacular liability. And in a rational world would cost his recruiter Blair Hartley his job on Monday.

But that's only because we were slow to sack Hartley for Maric.

Maric should be back next week. BIG DEAL. max Gawn will make Maric look like celeb Daniel in the ruck

I guess Ivan will be back this week, we have really missed his physicality. Even when he is getting beaten by the bigger ruckmen he is always bullocking and blocking and making a contest.
It's going to be a tough gig against Gawn but the big fellow will give his all like he always does.

Unfortunately he is past it.
Cement legs can't care him any more.
I think he is past it too. Second half of last year he was just running on the spot. Can't imagine what he is like now.

UNfortunately our future lies with Hammer and Chol. :whistle

He might have slowed a bit and the end is nearing, but he is a contested beast. I'll be very surprised if Titch, Dusty, Miles etc don't play better with him in the side.

Yep. His assured hands in close over Hampson's fumblitis helps us significantly in and around the clearances. Plus he won't drop every uncontested or contested mark.

Here's the thing about Ivan. Even if he can drag us through seventeen games this year he'll get flogged in a final. And he'll be gone next year.

So do we start blooding ruckmen next year? Or do we trade for one with all these disposable draft choices that fall from heaven? Along with a big-bodied mid, a change ruck/forward, a full back. Another fleet outside mid and a versatall forward?

I'm ok with using Ivan in support roles this year, but if we can't develop at least one change ruck we are out of mini and into major rebuild town.

If Tyrone is too tender, Griffiths has vertigo and Hamster is broken again we have to introduce Soldo and Chol. Maybe even Beanie.

This rebuild *smile* has to happen.

Gawn looked scarily good against the Pies - or at the very least looked scary. I'd fear for Soldo or Chol against him. Ivan on the other hand might scare Gawn. But it's true we desperately need a succession plan for when Ivan goes....With our team though do we need a skilful athletic type like Goldstein, or do we need more of a menacing aggressive presence with a bit of skill attached, like Ivan?

Soldo and Chol clearly not ready. We need Ivan to do as much of the work he can this year and seriously target a ready-made ruckman next year that Soldo and Chol can continue to learn around. Blooding them this year is suicide.

We've needed a succession plan in our ruck department for the last 3 years. Our answer was Hampson and Soldo. One is a complete hack and the other may never make it. Meanwhile Geelong pick up Smith, GWS get Mummy. Adelaide got Jacobs. Sydney picked up the ruckman from West Coast.
