Obvious question is what the hell happened in 2015 if he feels he can do better next year?

Groundhog day I guess. For the last three years we continually read and hear where they (the team) admittedly stated they could have done better or where they failed to execute a better overall game plan. There seems to be a weakness in the dynamics of the team, a flaw in our game plan, or even a lack of discipline from the coaching staff.

I am disgusted to read they did not execute a 100% effort in another cut elimination final. I hope Maric has one more season in the tank and there is no denial he is a warrior on the field, however I'm worried about him going all the way through the 2016 season. Maric needs to be carefully managed to prolong his energy and keep him fit if we go into another finals campaign in 2016. Griffiths or Vickery need to step up another notch or two to fill the void. Mcbean is another option to learn their gig too. If they can't then we may see all of Maric, Vickery, & Griffiths moved on.

I don't have a good feeling for 2016.

The stark reality is the four games we lost in the past 17 were all to teams with gun rucks - either way taller or way more athletic than Maric - the rucks were Natinui; Sandilands; Jacobs & Goldstein.

Love Ivan but he isn't at the superstar level to take us to a flag & clearly Hampson isn't either. Foolish to defer addressing the ruck issue to after 2016 season.

We, as the Hawks have done, need to work out a way to capitalise on the opposition ruck work in other ways if our own ruck can't work to our favour.

Love the big Ivvy! Has been so brave the last couple of years fighting through the groin issues he has had.

He must be feeling better again now judging by his comments so heres hoping he can get back to beast mode we all loved a few years back!

Maric saying he wants to return to his aggressive approach next year.

Cotchin saying he will be ruthless about making sure we are on the right track, saying he has a lot more to offer.

:spin :spin :spin :spin :spin :spin :spin :spin :spin :spin :spin :spin :spin :spin

Its always next year with these blokes. Has been since the 2013 finals disaster.

And we will hear the same this time next year no doubt as another season is meekly surrendered.

Groundhog day.

That was the big risk this trade period for leysy as well.

We all love Ivvy, but the fact of the matter is, him being demolished has been the oppositions driving force towards the two winnable finals in three years.

Get close to square in the ruck against both Carlton and North - we win both.

Realise getting another ruck in would upset him & the investment in Shaun.

But sometimes you have to admit you've got it wrong and upset the apple cart.

Ruck stocks = biggest worry going into 2016 (alongside Handbrake's gamestyle).

The rest of the huffing, crying and sulking about what we give up for Yarran, get for Astbury, what happens with Lennon etc. is childs play to next years chances.

Right on. Mr L. :clap

We have to be able to tighten up at ground level at the CBs. If their ruck is having a picnic to shut down the outlets. Hence Townsend, not that one unproven inside hunter is enough. Gawd knows we need Ivan to do more hunting and less spectating.

I don't mind us just totally giving up on the ruck (and we clearly have) provided our ruckman and mids can play tight for spells. They're way too loose ATM. Borderline witnesses. Ivan's gotta lift or go. Spite would be a good start.

I agree with your diagnosis of the problem, but not the analysis of our response.

Personally, I reckon not moving on rucks was a pragmatic response to the situation. Ivan is a battling, middling ruck, he has his good days and bad, but he's who we've got. Hampson hasn't worked out as well as we'd liked, is probably a overpaid and his contract is probably a year too long, but as a back up ruck he's OK, and again, he's who we've got.

Throw in TY and griff and our ruck division is just OK, middling, as is most sides. Given that, and given there are really only 3 or 4 bona-fide consistently dominant rucks in the comp who aren't going anywhere, we made the pragmatic decision to sit pat, that poaching a ruckman was too hard and expensive, correct IMO. Or to put it another way, our hands are tied, both internally in terms of contracted rucks, and externally in terms of what was available.

Dimma actually said this very thing in the infamous SEN interview. We've got enough mediocre rucks, if you can't get an outstanding one then don't bother.

Problem is against the cream our mediocre rucks are uncompetitive and are the single chief reason we have lost 2 of our 3 finals.

We don't need to be elite, we just need to get to a stage we can compete. There were rucks around this trade period that could have provided that.

We can't cry bad luck if badly losing the rucks costs us another final ILHO cos Maric and Hampson are still going to get towelled.

The one way of thinking leysy could entertain - they believe Griff or TV can and will be be moved into the number 1 ruck role as the year progresses.

That could give us some chance of holding our own.

Who do you believe was available and an upgrade?

Honestly there were times last year that Ivvy looked to be moving in slow motion. A transition of some sort needs to happen.

I'm guessing he's referring to guys like Zac Smith and Dan Currie who were both traded this year. Even Giles, who was pretty good for GWS.

All good Snakey. I'm paraphrasing too by the way, he didn't actually say our rucks are mediocre :hihi

The stats man was talking more about height wasn't he?

I think he said, we've got enough 200 cm rucks, if we're going after one, it'll be a monster.

Yes, exactly right.

Yes. But then we recruited Mabior Chol under 200cm so I'm confused.

Chol's a speculative rookie pick. He may also grow and I don't think we're really sure at this stage where his best spot will be. He could be a key position player or a ruck man depending on how he develops.
