Got a feeling that there is a rule for the US Open that the cut can be made for players greater than 10 shots behind the leader

Could be a slim field

don't think the us open applies that rule. at present cut is projected to include +4, which includes 71 players. McIlroy at -11 is 15 shots above that.

that rule does apply in the us masters however (there is a minumum number of players rule though to counter blow out leaders)

No doubt golf's overall appeal won't be as great in Tiger's absence. Like Jordan before him his brilliance transcended the sport to the mainstream.

The perfect example ToO .............basketball over here has never been as popular as it was when Jordan played, don't let the media tell you any different either, they lie just to save their own useless skin and jobs.

Just take a look at how popular BBall is in Australia these days to what it was back in its halycon days of the 80's.

Not even a shadow of interest when comparing yesteryear and today.

Tiger or not I have the same passion for golf. Love all the majors, US Open is always a great test.

Would like to see McIlroy win it after his Masters collapse

I also BCL, just saying, its amazing how LESS talk there is about the game in general though when there isnt a clear phenom playing the game, that was the point I was attempting to make.

Looks like it is McIlroy's to lose from here. A superb second round

If he loses this one though the media are gonna have a *smiling* field day on him.............bad news if your name is Jean Van de Velde though as that would overtake his performance for the greatest chokes of alltime (which I still think belongs to the Shark @ The Masters anyway)

Guy is playing out of this world golf.......

:hihi .... how embarrassing would that be !........Luckily for the PGA that rule is superseeded by the "minimum player rule" as Tiger Shark mentioned.

hell, it would have been Rory and Yang playing Match Play for the last 2 days if that rule applied to the Letter of the Law, but for his double bogey on the 18th.

Surely he couldn't let this one slip.............could he ?.... ;)

McIlroy outstanding. Some great par saves in the first half dozen holes and in complete control of his game. Amazing to think he's just 22.

Day a superb round, pity the yanks only showed a couple of birdie putts late in his round. Will have to show him tomorrow playing in the 2nd last group I think. Another super talent.

8 stroke lead going into the last Rd !

Who wants to be the first to say it ?...... :hihi

Hoping for another top 5 finish for Day, very good player, hope he can keep a levelhead and should really be something here shortly.

if you're Day you've just got to go out and post a score. another 65 would be perfect. then just hope Rory has some hidden fish bones in his sandwich :hihi

Tiger who? Brilliant golf by the young man.

Yep I reckon he will win many more majors in years to come.

All the talk pre tournament was on how hard the course is. Some were suggesting that noone would break par over the four rounds. Well, Rory has set all kinds of records. I am pleased for him after his implosion at Augusta.

And Jason Day came second. He has had a couple of good major results in a row as well. He has become Australia's best golfer in what seems like a very short space of time.

The course played pretty easy in the end. All sorts of records set by McIlroy and others. Distance is irrelevant nowadays, they fly the ball near 300 yds! Any time you have soft greens you are going to see good scores.
Day's major record is astonishing - first US Masters 2nd - first US Open 2nd - first Open Champ - T60th. Long off the tee, great around the greens and fearless. Looking forward to watching him over the next couple of decades.

Todays Age has one very small reference to Day's second place. Pathetic

Has there been a better start to a players major career than 60th, 10th, 2nd, 2nd in the 4 big ones?

It is very impressive isn't it?

Unfortunately he has flown under the radar to Rory twice now....for his implosion at the Masters and his streaking the field at the US Open. He seems to be forgotten about by the Australian media and public at the moment.

He is a seriously good golfer...Australians who have been on the tour for much longer than him including Scott, Appleby, Allenby and Baddeley who have been fairly high profile players haven't had as many top 2 finishes in a major as he has.

The Age must have read this post, they published almost two paragraphs on Day.

FFS, this guy is our best golfer by miles!
He's talented, competitive, good looking, well spoken, humble. What more do they want?
Silly me, if he shags schoolgirls, mainlines coke or shoots cats, then the Age may write something
