Golf

I’m not a big fan of Norman per se, but even he flagged the massive opportunity of creating a proper world super tour years and years ago. Might have even first raised it in the late 90’s …can’t remember.
Yeh, Norman thought much bigger than the duffers running the show. And ultimately whilst the shark had personal motives what he was also trying to do was benefit his fellow pros and the game in general as well.

I'm still a massive fan of the shark for all his obvious flaws. He has a genuine love of the game of golf. Moreso than the likes of Dud Monahan

I remember years ago Steve Stricker was asked why he wasn’t playing in the British Open. In some way, to his credit, he was brutally honest but he said it was too far away, too cold, and he just wanted to stay Stateside. Something like that. Wow.

Anyway, whilst a heap of Americans do travel and play around the world, there’s still a bit of an underlying outlook like Stricker’s both at player and Tour management level which is crazy because the game is played on fantastic countries outside of America and on fantastic courses with great weather to boot. Australia ? RM ? All the British links courses ? Asia has some cracking courses now.

America is a great place to play golf and have a tour, but times have changed drastically and the aforementioned myopia is just dumb.

I said 18 months ago, or whenever it was that LIV hit the scene, that the underlying motive was to try and construct an F1 version of golf. The PIF dude was asked about this yesterday and said yes, that’s exactly what we’ve been trying to achieve.

The irony of this is, as I also said at the time, is that if that incompetent fwit Monahan had half an ounce of talent he’d have constructed exactly that via the PGA Tour and grown the game beyond all belief and had complete control of it as well. But he didn’t. His dumb, US myopic lack of genuine talent wouldn’t allow him. Now he’s had to take it up the proverbial instead.

I said he should have been sacked back then. Now he definitely should be.

Side note: when the current owners of F1 bought it in around 2016 they paid $4 billion or so for it. The Saudis offered $20 billion for it last year. Ergo….the Saudis saw the massive $ potential of a proper world golf tour but Monahan the dunce could not. And here we are today.

LIV timed their arrival on the scene perfectly I reckon, and caught the PGA Tour napping. They have been napping for 25 years, and why wouldn’t they, when Tiger Woods was single handedly taking the game to popularity levels never seen before. The bludgers had to do nothing but sit back and watch the money pour in on the back of Tiger’s popularity.

Ever since I started watching golf in the 80’s the game has always had at least a couple of must watch players. Seve and The Shark through the 80’s and 90’s. Tiger and Phil then took up the mantle. But now, for mine, whilst we have a lot of great players, none of them have that captivating, swashbuckling style and aura about them. None of them have you checking the tee times to see what time they are hitting off.

And that’s why I reckon LIV got their timing right, whether it be by design or just plain luck. Whilst they didn’t have a huge amount of top quality players, their tour wasn’t going to be considered totally redundant because they weren’t competing with a Tiger Woods type player in the prime of his career playing on the PGA Tour.

Like them or not, LIV has been good for the game, for no other reason other than the fact they have shaken up the PGA Tour and made them realise the game doesn’t revolve around them and their selfish ways. I applaud them for that.

Whisper around that the PGA Tour made a hasty deal because some big name players, including Jon Rahm, Cantlay and Morikawa were about to be announced as signing with LIV for next year.

Interesting if true. Wonder if it will ever be confirmed or denied now.

What is the wash up for Norman?

And will there still be holes where you can throw all your rubbish on to the course?

I reckon the shark will be just fine. His skin doesn't just look thick! The people that never liked him will go on not liking him. Yeh hes motivated by money but he's a golf tragic. Has always respected the game IMO. Maybe the greatest loser in the history of sport? Never heard him be nothing but magnaminous in defeat.

I just hope Augusta have the decency to invite him back, in a lot of ways he is synonymous with that course, at least to a stack of aussies of my generation.

Poor old Greg Norman, this will be another 'Major" disappointment for him.
Maybe getting a bit old, like many of us on PRE too, but I don't think I'd be too worried about him being poor! Made $$millions from his success at GC designing business, on top of golf money where he'd been No.1 player for about a year, then the substantial LIV $$ recently on top. Has to be close to a half-billionaire. I think he sold his US estate in Florida for ~$A70m.

Greg not only good at playing golf; even better at knowing how to make a $. I'm really not too worried about him.
[Could probably still go on Seniors Tour and contend too]

Answer to Q1: more $$$ in payout if not a continuing role with LIV/PIV.
A2: hopefully not. Never want to see that drunken debacle again ... especially not at good GC, ... anywhere.

I'm starting to feel sorry for Norman, the Saudi's have used him up and spat him. If only he could've set LIV up without them.
As long as he doesn't get strangled and dismembered by a dozen or so assassins he should be pretty happy.

Back to the actual golf, Tommy Fleetwood was Shark like in losing today.

Blew chance after chance mostly by being soft and then loses to the hail Mary when he is in a good spot to win.

Not sure the poor blighter will ever win on Tour after that, he'll need a 5 shot lead on the last.

And here it is ! The 2023 PRE US Open Championship. Long, fast greens, thick rough. I don't think you numpters can handle it. I was supposed to be there but a torn meniscus in the knee and arthritic clean out has put the kosh on that. Spewing. Pebble Beach in 8 weeks time instead.

Can we stop BT Tiger or Tigerman from winning 2 majors in a year ? These are the rules. Same as always but given the amount of stuff ups last time, read and apply carefully numpters. Entries close Thursday June 15 at 5pm. Here we go.

Pick eight players with a combined price of 350 or under. Best six scores are counted EACH DAY and added up for a daily team score. The daily team scores are then added up each day to provide a rolling leaderboard with the lowest total at the end of 4 days being the winner (Redford P. Reds).

Any players in your team that don’t make the cut are given a daily score of field average plus two.

In the event of a tie, the lowest final round team score wins.

Any WDs will be subbed by the player immediately below your WD.

Goodluck and may the best Redford win.
