Lot of the PGA players are calling for Monaghan's resignation. Can't say I blame them. And all the 9/11 stuff he went with too. Can't see him lasting. The revelation of all this merger without proper, considered process and consulting key players, looking like a PR disaster.

Fair bit to play out here I reckon. Apparently gloves came off at players meeting today, standing ovation when someone called on Monaghan to resign.

McIlroy told one complaining player to just play better and he'd be fine and was told to *smile* off.

Not sure about that. Besides the fact nobody knows what the terms of the LIV sign on bonuses were (ie were they staggered over the course of 3-5 year contracts or all up front ?) plus they were also tied to the participation in all LIV events over that period - which will now not occur - some people are saying it may null the bonuses. Doubt it personally but you never know.

Further, one or two key reporters are suggesting that the PGA Tour players are going to be paid their own sign on bonuses with the new LLC, to be politely termed “guaranteed salaries.”
If you don't follow him already, Joe Pompliano on Twitter has a really good summary. He also has a newsletter that I subscribe to (free). He focuses on American sport and money/business. I would post his summary but don't have the skil.

If that part about Rory is true, not surprised. No-one likes a Figjam. :p

He’s done a bit of a cut and paste of a few other reports. For pure golf news and guys with the inside running, I go to Golf Digest, Golf World and people like Jaime Diaz and Tim Rosaforte (before he passed away) and some guys that write for Sports Illustrated and The Athletic. You need subs for much of their stuff though.

Poor old Greg Norman, this will be another 'Major" disappointment for him.
Seems to be taking a lot more flak. Doubt he'd be disappointed at all. And doubt he would have sort some sort of role in the new setup. Reckon this is what he would have wanted all along.

I'd bet a few $$ on Monaghan not being involved moving forward.

I thought that yesterday too, but its looking like the PGA Tour players are going to get a handsome pay day for their loyalty which might quell a bit of the unrest with them.

I've come full circle here now.

I genuinely feel sorry for Rory having to sit there today trying to hold the positions he has been pushing for 12 months, while also being positive and supporting the direction the PGA Tour has now taken.

They've trotted him out to be the face of the tour through all this, arguably ruined his chances of winning several tournaments, and have now made a fool of him. He must be privately seething with the way this has all gone down.

I said 18 months ago, or whenever it was that LIV hit the scene, that the underlying motive was to try and construct an F1 version of golf. The PIF dude was asked about this yesterday and said yes, that’s exactly what we’ve been trying to achieve.

The irony of this is, as I also said at the time, is that if that incompetent fwit Monahan had half an ounce of talent he’d have constructed exactly that via the PGA Tour and grown the game beyond all belief and had complete control of it as well. But he didn’t. His dumb, US myopic lack of genuine talent wouldn’t allow him. Now he’s had to take it up the proverbial instead.

I said he should have been sacked back then. Now he definitely should be.

Side note: when the current owners of F1 bought it in around 2016 they paid $4 billion or so for it. The Saudis offered $20 billion for it last year. Ergo….the Saudis saw the massive $ potential of a proper world golf tour but Monahan the dunce could not. And here we are today.

Yep, Monahan has been played for the fool that he is.

LIV sued the PGA, Monahan and the PGA counter sued. It took him a while, but the penny finally dropped that the PGA didn't own world golf, and that the PGA were going to losein court. So he got into bed with the enemy, the enemy who he had continually trashed and badmouthed.

He knows he's a hypocrite but he doesn't care.

Monahan has been with the PGA Tour since 2008. He became CEO in 2017.

Whilst the Tour product *smile* all over LIV in my personal opinion, the fact of the matter is that it wasn’t Monahan that created it, it was Deane Beman, Tim Finchem and the players over many decades that did. All Monahan has done is just set the ship to cruise control. Even the small and obvious operating annoyances of the Tour he hasn’t been able to correct let alone create a global strategic plan for the Tour and golf generally.

There could not have been a worse CEO at a more critical time to see what was coming down the road and plan and act accordingly.

Being a massive F1 fan, personally, I reckon I’ve been thinking about a proper world tour like F1 for over 20 years. And this spud is getting paid how much ? To run the pre eminent and world golf controlling entity that the Tour is ?

Staggering.

Loving your work.

I’m not a big fan of Norman per se, but even he flagged the massive opportunity of creating a proper world super tour years and years ago. Might have even first raised it in the late 90’s …can’t remember.

But anyway, wouldn’t you sort of see that as the first sign of what would ultimately become a reality and start strategically manoeuvring for it at the Tour ? Nup.

To that end, the only slack I’ll cut Monahan is that Finchem before him should have been setting the wheels in motion ie this has been on the horizon for a looong time and totally ignored by all and sundry - including the players. Instead, the Tour poo-pooed Norman, and stuck its collective heads in the sand for years. ….until now. And we’ve seen this week the arse reaming they’ve had to take as a result. Strategic mis-management 101.

In some ways, despite the whole sports washing and human rights issues etc with the Saudis, I say good on them for beating up on the US myopic, asleep at the wheel, PGA Tour.

Other entities that need to wake up as well now are the controlling bodies of the 4 majors. If they don’t move with the times, they too will find themselves in a hole. That’s another perspective/story, but anyway.

I'm starting to feel sorry for Norman, the Saudi's have used him up and spat him. If only he could've set LIV up without them.

Same here, it's good to see the PGA get their comeuppance
