Southern Golf Club. Now there's a crap course as well. Peter Thomson did his usual trick of trying to build a links course on completely flat inland terrain and made a balls up of it on those 9 holes that he "shoved" in there. Worst greens I've ever played on. Small, cricket pitch hard, upturned saucers of greens with diseases in them everywhere.
Southern try to disguise their very ordinary layout by having a massive modern clubhouse. Fooling no-one.
I was a member of Southern for 9 years throughout the '90's into 2001 (won "A" grade one Saturday, which is the highlight of my career as a hack) and can vouch that the greens were small, hard and "upturned" as described, but in 9 years I never saw any hint of disease in them and they were always in good nick, especially after the outlawing of spikes. However, the condition of the rest of the course was amazing, as good as anything anywhere. It's a pity the layout was terrible - very straight and flat, but long and not a lot of fun to play.
I played at Moonah Links Legends course on Sunday, now there's a nice layout!
