Golf

I'm moving to the Gold Coast for work and am joining the Gold Coast Country Club.

Very reasonable membership rate (future locked) no social fees, and there's a driving range attached to the course.

Lucky bastard Dirty Dog..... :hihi. Good on ya

My fav track up there is Hope Island, Robina Woods is very picturesque as well, not as good a course but fun to play. If you get the chance to head up to Coolumn, do so as that's a ripper as well.

Cheers Archy

id love it if you could rank the top 5 or 6 GC clubs, not just the course but the overall set uo,

I take it youd place Hope Island at # 1

Apparently Gainsborough Greens; Royal Pines sanctuary Cove are all good clubs.

I havent played up there for a few years now mate, last trip was to Coolumn for a few days 2 years back.

Im not sure what level your golf as it but this is what I have found.

Hope Island - Best all around track up there

Royal Pines - Absolute snack of a golf course, if you can hit it straight then its very easy.

Robina Woods - Tight, short, very picturesque

These are the 3 ones I remember the best but Lakelands, The Glades, Sanctuary Cove, The Glades and Palm Meadow are all good tracks, its just a matter of personal preference. Only course I havent played that I want to is Brookwater.

There was a course about an hours drive from the Gold Coast called Kooralbyn Valley that is now a goat paddock I think, longest and one of the hardest couses I have played. Thursday comp was off the very back pegs and if you beat your handicap, you got a box of balls. I was playing off 1 at the time and was square to the card standing on the 18th tee which is a par 5, hooked my tee shot into the water, took a drop and hit my 3rd to about 20 feet. 2 putt for par and a box of balls is mine, no free balls for Archy as it was the best 3 jag of my life....... :'(

What happened to the big names in the Aussie Open this year?

The course is all waterlogged on Day 4 due to the Sydney storm last night.

I'm not a huge golfing fan. But I must admit I'm impressed with Peter Senior's Australian Open win at the age of 53.

That is a great effort.

True. I was surprised as he hasn't won many since the 90s IIRC. Maybe the more lower profile competitors (and rain storm) have helped him.

Anyone see James Hahn give it a bit of Gangnam Style after a birdie at the Phoenix Open?
Hope the link works.
The guy should have a whole new set of fans after this.

If you haven't seen Garcia's shot out of the tree at the Arnold Palmer Invitational today here it is @3.10.

Best sporting weekend of the year coming up (well, at least for the past 33 years). Tipping golf is a mug's game but sometimes you jag a winner, which keeps you coming back. (I think I tipped Immelman on this thread in 2008 but it's been a long time between drinks.)

Might avoid the winner and just bet winner w/o Woods. Mahan, Choi, Schwartzel all go OK on the track. Freddie J and Colsearts for extra value. Would love Stricker to win it but you'd think Augusta is the last place he'd win that elusive major.

Will be good to see the 14yo kid go around. His scores at Augusta will echo mine on Royal & Ancient Morack on a good day back in the '90s.

Happy punting.

Agree, best single sporting event on the calender, have a friend who will be in the crowd this year and he was one very excited 42yr old boy.

Think it could be Mahan's turn to win a major. I'll be having something on Mickleson, Snedeker, Dufner, Mahan & Molinari.

I will be watching this.
I you tubed the last day of the '86 Masters when The Golden Bear tore up Augusta.

Amazing.

Norman was brilliant also but not noticed by the commentary team.

Tiger firing bullets again on both counts. :D

Yep not many know Norman birdies 14-17 in that last rd, brilliant field an finish , only rival 93 open.

IMHO it's hard to go past Woods an Rory , both coming into
Form an Woods seems to be able to atleast control his cut of the tee, thou Augusta dosent suit it. If an that's a big if A Scott putts well he will give it a massive shake...

Was interested to hear Craig Parry talk on SEN last night. He said it was a real advantage to play later in the day - less dew/moisture more length was the main point. He said it was quite wet (7 out of 8 times he played it) and the ball sat down on the fairways and you felt you needed to hit down to get the ball up.

I note Tiger hits off in Group 15 (10.45am) and Group 30 (1.41pm) on the 2 days, may be some advantage.

I looked at last year, on Day 1 of the Top 13 scores only one player (Paul Lawrie) hit off in the first 15 Groups. 8 of the Top 13 came from the last 8 groups.

Would be interesting to look at the history and see where eventual winners were paired in the first 2 rounds.
