General Trade Discussion 2022

Yeah no worries mate.Lets go after a bloke who can't get a game at the suns and be our 3rd highest paid player on our list.
What a kick in the guts too our premiership players who took a cut too win flags.
Bowes was a former top 10 pick, he has a decent shoe & his total bill is around 2 million (spread over 4 years). If this is the ticket for Jefferson then I'm all in, money can be sent to Bowes account instead of Hopper & I'll scrap for another inside mid with a late pick. That to me is the smart play.

7. Jefferson
12. Keeler

* Tom Mitchell for 2 years (instead of Taranto)

No 7 year deals, no major injury concerns, some chance Gold Coast have pulverised yet another rookie into the ground. The list keeps getting longer now with Peter Wright succeeding at Essendon & Brodie stepping up for Freo. I actually liked Bowes as a junior, I didn't mind him in his stints in defence either, he's a good shot in multiple positions so he represents a solid gamble.

We're still down a mid but I'm not panicked as the state leagues usually deliver, I'll keep a late pick up the sleeve. Tom Lewis is one bloke I'll consider and whilst not a ready-made, I like Angus Anderson for one of my late selections.

You can't stand a Bali bombing survivor who recovered from 2nd degree burns to 50% of his body and almost died during surgery
I was at that game at the then Telstra Dome, i was gutted with the loss but one of the greatest comeback football stories of all time.
Great to see him still involved in footy and doing the best job for his club, (even if it may again be at our expense;)).
That game did bring a tear to my eye, I also visited the bomb site & was interviewed by Stateline, that era was memorable for all the wrong reasons.

You would trade 19 for Mitchell? So you have 7, 12.

The Bowes and Mitchell salary would be around 1.4, same as Hopper and Taranto.

But I don't think you compete for a flag with just Tom Mitchell into this side for 2023. It's a sideways move.

And you definitely have to rebuild the midfield in 2 years' time and you aren't a finals side at all. Then it's a total rebuild.

I'm down a blue collar extractor at the minute but I'm very confident about drafting one, the hole will be plugged in 2022.

Is Mitchell worth 19? I think he goes cheaper than that but let's just wait and see.

You haven't addressed the question, with just Mitchell and your blue-collar draft extractor, do you think you can win a flag next year or even the year after?

I understand your thinking Bully, you are looking long term but I feel like your moves are built around competing for a flag in 2025 and beyond not 2023 or 24. Your thinking and list recommendations and thinking would be totally aligned with mine if we were a team outside the 8. But we aren't. We are in the window to win flags. Getting Taranto and Hopper extends the window. Maximizes the current weapons we have, a fit Martin and a still improving Bolton mainly in the forward 50 next to Lynch, Cumberland and MoJnr. That's a winning forward line. Good luck stopping that. These two give us that ability.

You don't know how long the window lasts, look at Melbourne.

We have the chance to extend ours. When you can win a flag, you slightly overpay to stay in that window. This year we had some historically weird moments ( Cumberland plays on, no 50 for ball kicked in the crowd, an all-time ARC overrule, your best player going away with mental health issues, your 2nd best player getting sniped and missing two games and that's off the top of my head and how many games lost by under a goal?)

We had four top 30 picks last year and we both have minor issues with how they were spent but we went to the draft hard, this year we pivot to trades.

So far we have swapped CCJ and pick 12 for Taranto. That's a win for me. So far so good. Let's wait and see what the Hopper price is.

But the thinking and strategy for a side outside the 8 and building compared to a club competing for a flag should be different. I'm not sure yours is.

Fair enough caesar.
I apologise for my comments.
Wasn't trying to make light of his situation.
Terrible thing what happened over there.
Have a good day all.

Jason McCartney makes an appearance in the 4 part Stan series about the Bali bombings. Thought it wasn't going to be flash but it was pretty good.

Starting to fall into the forget GWS side of the conversation. GWS has loaded up on picks and now wants more..... R they planning to offer up a heap for pick 1 or 2??

They are looking too hard to deal with and if not careful will get a rep like Essendrugs. As I hv stated previously this brinkmanship achieves not much - just get on with it. If they wont give up Hooper for what we offer then we need to move onto plan B assuming we have one. Just sitting around staring at each other is stupid.

Hopefully the pun was unintended. ... otherwise, considering the lives lost and impacted. ... it's just about the unfunniest one liner I've heard for a long time.

I can definitely see how people would see this as a bet each way but I reckon Tom Mitchell is the equal of Taranto when stationed in the middle, I firmly believe they will offer up similar performance. I don't rate Taranto as an elite resting forward, maybe he gets there but more likely to be a solid citizen type. He's probably comparable to Lambert, that as a like for like trade is reasonable. The only catch is Lambert went for a rookie pick & Taranto two top 20 selections.

Would I settle for Taranto & Bowes? Yes, again if we can walk away with Jefferson then it's a big win, one key forward in the bag & next year's first safe & sound. If Hopper goes for pick 31 (in addition to next year's first) then it's sayonara Lemmey, probably no shot at Knobel & we'll be scrounging around for some decent tall timber.

The sooner we get the spine sorter the better, the flag top ups can still be facilitated, albeit with a narrower window given the bargains are comparable in age to our existing core.

If there's one thing I'm adamant about it's not selling the farm for inside mids. One of Taranto or Hopper is ok, two seems a bit of overkill & looks on the surface like an all or nothing play.

Now that Bowes has chosen the Pussies
Will pussies use pick 7 to GWS for hopper?

Bully, I acknowledge that Mitchell is good at getting his hands on the ball but he needs to have quality outside mids to give it too. Taranto is physically a bigger player and can kick a goal. Mitchell needs to be inside 30 metres to make the distance if having a shot. His metres gained is just about negative as he scuttles sideways and backwards rather than going forward. Think there is a good reason that Sydney let him go and that Hawthorn are receptive to a trade.

Is it just me,

Or is the player trade market a bit weirder than it used to be

Blake Acres - 3rd rounder: josh dunkley - 2 first

Seems a weird disparity to me

Both 25, both 191cm, both best 22 players at most clubs

Further - bowes and 7 to cats on a 4 year deal?

If his 2 years suns wanted off the books were at 1.4m,

Could Cats have offered him 4 years for $1.8m with performance bonuses and corrected his wage to an amount commensurate with his ability?

fwiw, i reckon bowes will suit geelong

Liam Jones 3 years??? Wtf??? I thought only champs got them at 31????

Now antivaxxers from palm beach get them???

The draft analysis seems particularly thin to me also,

Plus The AFL seem to be taking hawks racism case actually seriously?

What next? Tigers win a free kick count?
