General Trade Discussion 2022

Is it just me,

Or is the player trade market a bit weird?

Blake Acres - held down wing all year in a good side, good numbers,
Acres was only worth a 3rd rounder ….unbelievable

I can definitely see how people would see this as a bet each way but I reckon Tom Mitchell is the equal of Taranto when stationed in the middle, I firmly believe they will offer up similar performance. I don't rate Taranto as an elite resting forward, maybe he gets there but more likely to be a solid citizen type. He's probably comparable to Lambert, that as a like for like trade is reasonable. The only catch is Lambert went for a rookie pick & Taranto two top 20 selections.

Would I settle for Taranto & Bowes? Yes, again if we can walk away with Jefferson then it's a big win, one key forward in the bag & next year's first safe & sound. If Hopper goes for pick 31 (in addition to next year's first) then it's sayonara Lemmey, probably no shot at Knobel & we'll be scrounging around for some decent tall timber.

The sooner we get the spine sorter the better, the flag top ups can still be facilitated, albeit with a narrower window given the bargains are comparable in age to our existing core.

If there's one thing I'm adamant about it's not selling the farm for inside mids. One of Taranto or Hopper is ok, two seems a bit of overkill & looks on the surface like an all or nothing play.

Mitchell doesn't address the issues that you suggest. He'd be a gap filler rather than a top up for a flag IMO.

Like Scoop I get where you are coming from long term, but we have a very very good team right now and we just need the right additions to take us to that next step. We are looking for a Cotch replacement (thats Hopper). You might say that could be Mitchell but I think Hoppers running is much better than Mitchell and would fit our style a lot better. Taranto I think you've nailed his role, he would play a similar role to Lambert (the club have commented on his defensive running in the past) whilst also providing a very strong rotation at stoppages.

Cotch will not be as good next year and I don't see Mitchell replacing him in the team. I feel a sideways move like you are suggesting with Mitchell will be just that and we will challenge but not be good enough for a flag, whilst at the same time, struggle to get access to those top 10 picks that we need if we are going the bottom out route.

You either need to go all in 1 way or the other, a foot in each camp is the path to mediocrity IMO.

Now that Bowes has chosen the Pussies
Will pussies use pick 7 to GWS for hopper?
But Geelong are the tight asss club.
Unless Hopper wants to move for 1kg Potatoes and Bread every week..
The media are creaming themselves over Geelongs moves this trade period.
A 800k Head ache in Bowes
A stuck up kid that thinks hid shitt dosent stink in Bruhn.
And Henry who is the best of the shallow lot but doesn't defend. Maybe he can tips off Rohan.
Some fkwit said Henry will be a Hawkins replacement.
This trade period us exactly like every trade period. Every club is shiit scared not get ripped off or bamboozled in a trade

There was one bad number though. His salary. Only on $180k supposedly and low balling Freo were miles off No Cap-ton's number and hence why they could only attain a 3rd rounder.

Bully, I acknowledge that Mitchell is good at getting his hands on the ball but he needs to have quality outside mids to give it too. Taranto is physically a bigger player and can kick a goal. Mitchell needs to be inside 30 metres to make the distance if having a shot. His metres gained is just about negative as he scuttles sideways and backwards rather than going forward. Think there is a good reason that Sydney let him go and that Hawthorn are receptive to a trade.

These are Taranto's career numbers versus Mitchell's worst year (2022), the metres gained for Taranto is being overstated.

What are Gold Coast likely to get in return?
Presumably it’s not so much what they gain - but what they maintain - as in the salary cap cash to keep a current player or two that might otherwise have shot through as well.

You can't stand a Bali bombing survivor who recovered from 2nd degree burns to 50% of his body and who almost died during surgery
I was at that game at the then Telstra Dome, i was gutted with the loss but one of the greatest comeback football stories of all time.
Great to see him still involved in footy and doing the best job for his club, (even if it may again be at our expense;)).
Not just a survivor. The bloke's a hero.

Blues basically swapped Jones (who didn't even play for them last year) for Acres. As much as I hate to say it but thats a big win for the Blues.
is it? Jones was their go to man in the back line, took on their best. their backline is still questionable, the reason their young star runs from the back to forward, providing their that additional run and carry. if you stop that, their defence suffers.

How is a stat being overstated?

You get two years of Mitchell at this level, in fact he may have peaked. Taranto entering peak years.

Goes to show you what a mockery the afl is rewarding the sun's with a priority picks because of poor management and stupidity Bowes typical example.

The biggest difference for me between Taranto and Mitchell is the Age difference. Taranto has at least 7 years with us where we would get maybe three from Mitchell.

At the same age there is a cigarette paper between their output. Mitchell has more possessions but you may remember earlier in his career he was roundly criticised for junk possessions e.g handball out the back etc. Tatanto will get better. A lot better. Look at Prestia after he came to us.

Another couple of factors which are debatable are 1) Taranto has a higher hurt factor with his possessions. That's my observation. And 2) Taranto has been playing in a team stacked with very, very good midfielders, Mitchell much less so.

I trust Blair et al.

Is he about to peak or is this the plateau for performance? That's my concern, whilst guys like Miller have taken it to the next level around the same age most mids display their complete trick bag by the age of 23. If we are paying 12 & 19 for 25 disposals at 60% efficiency with the majority of those possessions being uncontested then we are paying overs. If Taranto can become a 25 goal midfielder then we get a favourable return on investment. That's the benchmark but there's still plenty of uncertainty from my perspective.

Tom Mitchell is a nice addition for a team making one last tilt, the next couple of years will see plenty of retirements so Mitchell exiting the building around the same time no drama. By that stage you have two developing talls in Jefferson & Keeler, you could probably also grab a gun mid next year & there will be a few to pick from, even in the late first round. There's also probably another Pickett or Menegola steal somewhere in the draft, most years there's gold to be found.

Anyone know if GC draft concessions (academy prelist, additional rookie spots) continue this year?

It was at AFLs discretion

And they seem to be being pretty discrete

Yep good pick up for the Blues.

Will help address a big problem for the Blues which was transition running on a wing which they have lacked.

Why do we seem to be getting ripped when other clubs are just bringing in blokes with ease year in year out.

Yeah no coincidence there right rules changed for salary cap dumps I bet they didn't know sun's issues.

Sorry but this is where stats become warped.

Take a look at it year by year for Taranto. 1st 2 years from memory he played in the forward line with stints in the midfield, Mitchell has never done that.

Taranto
2017 - 15.4 possessions - 201.4m gained - score involvements 4.1
2018 - 20.8 possessions - 303.7m gained - score involvements 4.7
2019 - 27.7 possessions - 392.2m gained - score involvements 6.1
2020 - 19.3 possessions - 306.6m gained - score involvements 4.3
2021 - 26.5 possessions - 383.0m gained - score involvements 5.4
2022 - 25.5 possessions - 342.8m gained - score involvements 4.9

Last 2 years
26.1 possessions - 366.9m gained - SI 5.2

In terms of comparing to Mitchell, metres gained per disposal is significantly ahead of Mitchell over the last 2 years (14.0 vs 11.28 - 24% more metres gained per touch) and his socre involvements per possession are also way higher (impact per possession) at 20% vs 16%. Mitchell recorded 13% in 2022, thats 13% of the times he touches the ball it leads to a Hawthorn score. He has been as low as 8%. Taranto's worst impacting year was also 2022 which was 19% (which funnily enough is the same as Mitchells best season 2018 when he won the Brownlow)
