General Trade Discussion 2022

It makes enough sense, the only confusion is PRE can't make their mind up on Bowes as a player, hence the reluctance on making any definitive statement as to whether he's good or not. To put things as simply as can be, GC can't extend his contract again because that's what they've been doing for his entire career, they also haven't managed his career very well, much the same as Wright, Brodie etc. Bowes clearly would be happier at a more established club & therefore would like to extend his career by nailing down another 2 years which would give him one last deal to negotiate at age 27. This is plenty of time to prove to both club & player as to whether he's AFL quality, much like the other GC castaways, there's some chance he plants egg on the face of the Suns.

Missed opportunity Richmond, this was the trade we needed to nail down but instead of securing a top 10 pick we've traded out of the top 40, no mans land & I doubt we'll be seeing any key forwards this year or next.
We were into both GWS boys way before this came too light.
Prefer to be known as a standup club that a rep like EFC.

Looks like GWS will be swapping 3rd round picks with the Pies as part of the Hill trade. So I assume Collingwood get 40 and GWS get at least 1 of 43, 48 and 49. I think whatever they get back from the Pies will be coming to us as part of the Taranto trade.

Hill and 40 for a future 2nd and 48 or 49 sounds like a good deal for both parties.

What I don't get is if we give up (as touted)12 and 19 for Quentin what will we have to give up for Dennis?
Plus then no first round draft picks.
The're saying talent very thin this year, with no first round picks it would want to be, for our sake.
Looks like we are selling the farm for The Hollywood Brothers!

I think our salary cap would of been the reason we couldn't even consider it. I am amazed we can bring in Hopper and Taranto's salary let alone another $800k. This is a rare opportunity for the club to bring in two talented midfielders that we needed. Most other club supporters are very envious. Is there a big cost ?, is there a big risk ? of course there is but we just have to back the club that they are doing the right thing.

Until the fax has been sent nothing is concrete, I would be cooling on Hopper & grabbing Bowes even at this late stage. Paying top dollar for 2 inside midfielders quite possibly the worst way to rebuild, much like last year with the flanker at 17, or the year before a skinny tweener over Sam Taylor, we're going about things in the most inefficient manner. Better hope these GWS lads give us a short term fix because another 12th place finish will be extra costly. People already forgetting a 7th place finish in 2022 was actually very flattering considering the softish draw, plenty of potential for another middling finale.

Great way to do business - court someone for over 12 months and then back door them at the 11th hour? Not sure its a good way to encourage players to nominate your club into the future...

We've won 3 of the past 6 flags. In building those teams we made plenty of mistake and got plenty right. Think I'll be backing the club's approach over yours bully.

We'll get another soft draw, but Hoparanto should turn so many of those narrow losses into a top 4 finish and a prelim at least. And they'll lead the next gen through our next dynasty.

At 825k for next year, it can't be done Bully. You can't bring in Hopper and Taratno and throw in another 825k.

It's not missed if it can't be done.

People are way too hard on JHF. ANd when he was drafted by North, posters on here were saying that would lead to depression being drafted by such a basket case, and those posters were right.

Jeez that's a very negative view. We were a top 4 side that had no,luck. Couldn't get our best side on park for long enough nor buy a trick with the umps at the right time. I don't think it was age related, more luck related. The Cats win shows with the right luck and management an older side can win it.

Flattering - wrong IMO.

I am backing the club's approach but not the 2022 version, I've seen how things should be done and it doesn't involve trading out of two drafts. I preferred the 2006-2016 stewardship & I reckon those who fail to see the warning signs are being caught up into the hype of instant gratification. It will be an interesting 7 years, that much is true.

So we give up the opportunity to grab a very good midfielders and take a player who cant break into an average Gold Coast team and then hope the kid we get with pick 7 is ready to go next year? All doing this whilst we have an opportunity to grab another premiership.

This is what you call poor list management.

Yeah, but we took Banks, Brown, Sonsie, Clarke, Gibcus, Bauer last year - not exactly instant gratification. And trading picks out now doesn't mean we can't get some back in later - especially if we're a hard team to break into. And of course, there's always free agency.

The draft for me is not the issue, it's managing the cap and keeping a balanced list together. These trades look like list-balance moves to cover gaps that we haven't been successful in addressing through the draft. I'm ok with that.

Plenty of better ways to meet those objectives, Tom Mitchell would be fine & he won't cost the earth, that still enables one last tilt with the current personnel. Having pick 7, 12, 30 & next year's first a much better scenario from where I'm standing. Pick 7 & 12 could be bundled to get Cadman, if not ride with Jefferson & Keeler, then there's next year which could be best available. Selling the farm for injury prone inside mids not a percentage play, particularly in light of the GWS track record for selling mutton.

Wow Bully, so you think it's time for a full reset?

You've talked of the year being a middling 7th, you can't expect us to compete for a flag next year if we don't go the GWS mids route.

Nailed it imo.

Tom Mitchell will match the output of Taranto, at least for the next couple of years. There's your mid, a former Brownlow medalist who accumulates in a similar manner to Taranto. The whole notion of expecting a 25 y/o to suddenly transform into a goal kicking maestro is a long shot & just as speculative as bringing in an 18 y/o draftee. The big difference here is inside mids are always available, each and every year there are free agents, salary cap dumps & players desperate to get out of dodgy environments. This is not a percentage play.
