General Trade Discussion 2022

Essendon keen on Bowes, Dodoro looking to win trade week early.

Makes a lot of sense for the Bombers. Pick 22 is in no mans land with a Davey Junior bid expected somewhere around there. Makes a lot of sense to try and push that pick higher.

7 and Bowes for 22 seems like a good option, but the GC do need to find a way to push some of their 2nds into 2023.

This whole Bowes situation seems to make very little sense.

As I understand it, GC don’t want Bowes because he is owed $750K or so for two years and they can’t afford to pay him. So to get him off the books, they want to package him up with pick 7 and convince another club to take the package to get this salary off the books.

Lots of clubs are interested, obviously. Problem is, most of them can’t afford that kind of salary for a reserves’ level footballer, so they will take him and spread his salary out over three years so they can afford the salary.

There are two logical inconsistencies here.

1. Why would Bowes agree to take his salary over three years instead of two? Yes, it gives him another year but, if he is not, AFL standard, he is just taking longer to get his money. What is in it for him? He is obviously out on his ear after two years or three, so he may as well only waste two years of his life.

2. If he agrees to spreading the income out at Geelong or Essendon or wherever, why doesn’t he just agree to it at Gold Coast? Surely, if Geelong can spread his salary out over three years, so can Gold Coast.

So why don’t Gold Coast just go to him and say, “Lets spread your salary out.” Why is the AFL sanctioning this and helping out some other club?

These sums don’t add up.

Fuckn Scott gets Bowes deal at the bummers eh? What a Shiite show you are afl.
Part of this issue with Scott and Hocking previously, is that these 2 blokes have basically a forensic knowledge of EVERY player contract in existence whilst they're in office ..... massive advantage imo!

The bit thats in it for Bowes is maybe he has been told he will be delisted at the end of his contract (clearly not in GC's best 22) so if he is offered more money over 3 years than he is owed over 2, then he is making more. Lets say they offer him $200k for the last year, you take his $1.5m over 2, and make it $1.7m over 3 and reduce his salary per year to about $550k.

I don't think GC want him, they would rather pocket the salary cap and leave it open for a player they want to play in their team IMO. GC are improving and will probably make finals next year so they will want players that will impact finals and I don't think they see Bowes as one of those guys.

Teams down the bottom make sense for this, they have salary cap room, they will probably play him (he's probably a good player for a bottom team, but wouldn't get in the best 22 for a finals team) so the likes of Hawthorn, Bombers, North, West Coast all make sense, but Geelong is the one thats never made sense. They apparently have a "strict salary cap" which they have been lauded in the media for, yet are prepared to throw that in the bin, in order to bring in a player that will be playing VFL footy with them over the next 3 years, doesn't make sense at all for Geelong.

It makes enough sense, the only confusion is PRE can't make their mind up on Bowes as a player, hence the reluctance on making any definitive statement as to whether he's good or not. To put things as simply as can be, GC can't extend his contract again because that's what they've been doing for his entire career, they also haven't managed his career very well, much the same as Wright, Brodie etc. Bowes clearly would be happier at a more established club & therefore would like to extend his career by nailing down another 2 years which would give him one last deal to negotiate at age 27. This is plenty of time to prove to both club & player as to whether he's AFL quality, much like the other GC castaways, there's some chance he plants egg on the face of the Suns.

Missed opportunity Richmond, this was the trade we needed to nail down but instead of securing a top 10 pick we've traded out of the top 40, no mans land & I doubt we'll be seeing any key forwards this year or next.

Kangas in a good spot here should pisss off the sook back to SA get a first rounder plus more then pay for Bowes and #7 plus the number 1 pick 3 top 10 picks at least this could be the draft they set up their future with 3 too kids as well as bring in a player or two from elsewhere.
Bowes was highly rated as a junior so he still might yet find better form away from the suns and the distractions up there.
Could be a big trade draft for the Kangas and one they need to nail

An hour and 45 minutes in, and nothings happened. I'm disappointed.
All trades now have to be referred to the FARC but stupid AFL decided to allow him to go on leave
We expect an announcement after he’s reached via Zoom

Unfortunately North can’t do it. I could see him playing the mental health card/needing to be with family and then it being a bigger PR disaster for North. Really poor selection by North in my opinion. He may have been the best player, but it must of been obvious he was always going to back to SA. Take someone else and tell the fans why
It’s a poor selection in hindsight, but North couldn’t win. If they’d gone for another player, and JHF played like Daicos this year, we’d be criticising them for that.

Every other club would’ve taken him. If it were us, we’d have taken the best kid and backed our system - look what we’ve done with Dusty. We’ve also taken a number of WA players who’ve stayed. JHF has, unfortunately, turned out to be a sulky, immature kid. If he has serious mental health issues, they’ll likely come out during his career, and be Port’s problem.
