GAME DAY Tiges v Suns

Yes. We have seen enough to understand that "playing the kids" is NOT the backstop we always thought we had. At least we will be spoilt for choice of those who make way for our draft picks this year. Also, we are going to make a few "Hawthorn" decisions with our players who may be past a magnificent prime.
Too many of them looked like they had heavy legs so the younger, quicker GC players just broke away easily or caught us in tackles too easily. We had trouble dishing the ball out when tackled and if we did..."throw". Leppa made a good point about us not having a solid pre-season for the past 4 years bc we were in rest & recovery mode so that may be a factor in us looking slow and unfit. The longer qtrs this year perhaps haven't helped our older players along with the reduction in interchange. They are just stuffed.

Skipper is/has had his time in the middle. Needs another role {preferably fwd).
Replace Aarts or George?
Surely he has more pride. No shame for him to say I'm done. Will retire a legend. Brownlow, three time premiership captain, puts him in a very, very, small club, ( him and Voss of the ones still alive)
If he is fully fit and this is all he can give then he should make the announcement. If he isn't fit, tell us he is only playing because there is no alternative. Makes him more heroic.

Belllis on Fox. Can see he still loves out club and is almost guilty that he beat us.

Also can't help but think that he might have staked a claim for skipper if he was still around.

One of my fave ex tiges is Bellis. Love the guy and would have him back in a heartbeat
There are a few openings if he wants to head home.

The game plan is the problem. Our zone is in effective but SuperCoach is too *smile* proud to change it

Embarrassing.

Losing to the Suns, FFS.

To be honest I thought the game was flatter last week. I wasn't impressed by StKilda last week, the whole of the MCG just seemed to be out for lunch. We just seemed flatter than StKilda did. At least this week the Suns played well . . . for them anyway.

Richmond were simply awful.

Very little run, no defending space and not tagging players either. Seemed to be little effort from our players. It can be hard to see when at the ground, especially at Docklands, but I asked my partner who watched some of it on TV and I was right. The Suns outnumbered us in the contest and outnumbered us around the contest. Our players simply weren't working hard enough.

Is the system no longer working? No idea because we weren't playing to our system. There were a couple of bursts of energy which is more than I could say for the game against StKilda, but they were short and not sustained.

The skills are just woeful at the moment. Dropped marks, bad handpasses, kicks straight to the opposition etc. A real worry, our skills were never brilliant but they have really dropped off of late.

Pressure? Yeah, there was none, either way really, the Suns weren't good at pressure either. We applied virtually no pressure and with their players able to run free they just racked up cheap possessions and used them effectively.

Our midfield is a mess. Every centre clearance we knew which way it was going, and this against the Suns. Couldn't win a clearance at all. Reflected in getting smashed in the inside 50 count too - which is unlike Richmond.

A few of the older players look like their careers are ending. I have to say I think Cotch is pretty much done. Houli didn't look so bad tonight, at times he really was having a go, but I reckon his body is letting him down and I really can't see another year in him.

Lynch was a shining light, good to see him able to move much easier. Clearly playing with an injury was the wrong thing to do, he needs to be more mobile and tonight he was.

Some players either need a big turnaround in form or they should not be picked: Castagna has been rubbish all year. Aarts has had a few decent games but seems just below AFL level.

Others just seem a bit off the pace this year - not bad, just not as good as we know they can be: Grimes, Vlastuin, Riewoldt, Baker, KMac - we know they are better than this.

The youngsters are a mixed bunch. I would call time on Ross, Naish. But we also have to remember how long it took even our stars to get to the top - RCD needs time and experience, not sure if he can be an A grader but hard to tell what he can be with so few games. CJ needs more experience and has shown good signs.

Pickett shows intent and effort, just needs to clean up his game a bit - go the spoil not the bump, fix up the disposals, they're a bit all over the place. But he puts in.

Chol impresses at times, very short times. I have to say, not up to the level.

Umpiring? Yeah, the usual Dog's brekkie. Don't mind at all if they pay more holding the man frees, the player who is trying to gain possession of the ball has been abused too long - if they are held or pushed while not in possession, it should be a free kick. But the usual issue rears its ugly head every week. If you are going to pay holding the man you have to pay it all the time not some of the time - really, this should not need to be stated, it is obvious. Plus, if you are going to do this you also have to pay holding the man when a forward is impeded in a marking contest - one right in front of me where Lynch had one arm held as he was running towards the ball for a mark - this happens every week and every team does it and is on the receiving end of it. They simply must stop forwards from being impeded in this way in a marking contest, it is an absolute joke.

Richmond do not look like the cohesive unit of the last few years. Richmond players do not look like they are enjoying the game. Richmond players are not putting in the effort, they look very flat. The skills have dropped off. Something is seriously amiss. A great team, a team that has won 3 premierships in 4 years, simply does not drop their bundle this badly without a good reason. Is it fatigue - most likely mental fatigue I would think? Is it a falling out of some sort? Something is wrong and I hope that there is some wisdom at the club to try and fix things because this is simply not the team we have all watched achieve so much over the last 4 years.

There’s something to this. Something has happened. We’ve gone from near flag favourites to the worst team in the comp in a 2 game window. That doesn’t happen without some sort of impetus.

I’ve never seen anything like this in all my years of watching football. It’s unfathomable how bad we are. We won a *smile* flag 16 games ago and now we’re putrid.

Could it be we simply screwed up our training load during the bye? Perhaps under estimated how much rest we needed?

Marlion picket played in the saints game coming off a 5 day break after playing in the vfl and was our sharpest player which makes me wonder..
Then there is the injuries , Broad,Nicky V,Balta,Lambo,PRestia,Maybe Bolton had a minor issue , plus CCJ and Edwards tonight...
I know sometimes teams have a rash of injuries sometimes but makes me wonder..

Or perhaps someone did a wayne carey :D

It is hard to make any sense of our current form.
Surely some very good players are unavailable but those that remain should have been able to produce more than that.
Hard to think that some out there tonight will be with us next year. Aarts, Astbury Castagna Cotchin and Houli havn’t really looked like it all year.
Naish also doesn’t appear to be up to it, while Chol had a pretty good game.
I have no idea but maybe the absence of McCrae
and Leppitsch is proving just too greater loss?

I was at the game .
There is a definite loss of confidence amongst other things but our skills were just deplorable.
if we had won it would have been a heist, a few moments every now and again won’t win a game of AFL footy.
We were reemed by the umps in the last but the result was the correct one. It was way over umpired all night and we were beneficiaries of some of that in the first 3 quarters as well as the suns.
Concerned that some of our guys are nearing the end. Cotchin is gone, Astbury, Houli got plenty of the ball but made multiple errors, Jack is just going, Edwards hasn’t been himself all year.

What has happened to my Tiges? Can't beat the *smile* Suns? Jesus! Cotchin spent the whole night on his arse. Couldn't keep his feet. Looked like he had skates on. 2021 Tom Lynch has spent all his tickets in the 1st 20mins. Was the same before his injury break. He can still impact because he's a beast. But he can't move. What happened to CCJs mits? Kid arrived clunking everything. Now he can't get near it. I know defenders will put in more work but still. Chol is to be persisted with. He was doing good work in the ruck first half but Cotch's inability to get near it made him look bad. He dropped off a fair bit in ruck contests in the 2nd half but kept bobbing up and taking marks. Our skills look worse because our legendary running-both-ways is gone. When we could run to support and always provide an overlap and another running option we didn't need to hit as many targets by foot or with such precision. That has now stopped. The run is gone so we have to rely on hitting targets to advance the ball. But it's a Catch-22 because if you aren't running harder than the opposition then you aren't in front when the ball is released and you don't keep possession. The Sun's looked more skilled (seriously?) mostly because when they kicked it the player up the field was on his bike and in front of his opponent. Contrast to our forwards and mids when our backs tried to get it going? They were kicking to contests because they didn't have a leading player coming at them, with separation. Because our legs are shot. I don't know if they are actually shot, or mentally shot. But the effect is the same.

If you can't beat the Sun's. You're not playing finals. Sayonara 2021. What a ride it's been. 3 Cups. The greatest player in my lifetime isn't a cocky prick he's a quiet team-oriented beast. And he's a Tiger. I've seen the fastest hands in footy deliver gems to his teammates while being perennially under-rated. The once "lesser" Reiwoldt become one of the great forwards. I've seen Bachar Houli go from a discarded has-been to a Grand Final specialist running machine and a true statesman off the field. I've seen Richmomd go from a club with no indigenous players and an abysmal culture, to being a cultural home and centre for indigenous youth and the model for club culture within the AFL.

Love you Tiges. I can't see Hardwick's rabbit anywhere. But I still love la.

To be honest we haven’t played well all year. We had a great half against the dogs, a good game against a very poor st kilda, 15 minutes against the bombres, 75% of a game against the Eagles.
Thats about it apart from a decent quarter here and there.
Never really got started.

I cant believe how out of form I am at losing.

made all sorts of fundamental errors last night.

drank too much, picked (and lost) a short fight with mrs EZ, sent and posted stupid reactionary stuff all over the place, woke up on the couch.

But im a proud man and I know my best is good enough and that its not to far away.

there were some signs last week of my old effective losing strategies, but there will be a bit of a lag.

Im gonna go to work on a few things this week.
