Game Day - Tiges V Freo

This is why I keep writing about our poor development and needing a better assistant coaching panel.
We are really, really poor in these areas. I am astonished at how bad our development has been these last 2 years.

This is not just a 2022 problem.

And listen to Longmuir's press conference. Not just this one, but all of them. He is a teacher. their players are taught process and actions.

There is a serious underlying performance issue with our football dept.
I have been impressed by Longmuir whenever I have heard him speak. He has made a real team out of Lyons rabble. Find it hard to see why several posters think.he is a *smile* coach.

100% agree. Excellent coach IMO.

As an aside I have watched those last seconds again and there is no doubt the Freo player ran into the exclusion zone after Cumberland marked which means it really should have been a 50 metre penalty not a play on call.
Sounds like excuses, he shouldn’t have played on, but it should have been 50
When you play on immediately pretty hard to claim an opponent was in the exclusion zone.

A lot of hearsay in your post. You could be right, you could be wrong. My feeling is that there is not a lack of support at the Tigers, I'd think based on the recent history that culturally we are very strong in the area of support.
I would say in the past.

Not recently.

Question
Was the player who tackles Noah Cumberland and prevented him kicking the ball in the "protected zone"?

Watched it this morning and its 50m

Cumberland barely goes off his line, appears to be winding up for a shot on goal,

And brayshaw nails him from behind.

14 premiership points forsaken by a 9 points in a months

A goal and a half out of 2nd,

Suggests we're still a pretty good side

The Rats are circling.. Hardwick said Miller went off with a Calf, John Ralph was told by the club He had a Groin issue.

Dan Cherny has always hated us, have youever read some of his articles in The age in the past?

He's not even at The Age anymore, working for some minor publication.

I agree Tiger76 that one would think basics like kicking and situational awareness should be part of a player's DNA. But they arent always. Balta for instance hasnt ever had (to date) situational awareness. Not just last night. Most games. Aarts another.
Castagna's kicking. Say no more.

And if you are playing players in positions they are not necessarily meant to play in, then that's even more important to train basics to avoid these fundamental issues.

We lack confidence too. Basics are needed to be trained constantly. In any industry.
Yeah I’m not sure that cherry picking two players that for me aren’t AFL standard players (Castagna & Aarts), and a project player like Balta (who I believe didn’t grow up playing AFL) is a sign that the club is poor at development.

Castagna as we know was a special case that suited a team playing style who ultimately was kept longer than he should have been due to a lack of a suitable replacement.

Aarts was always a head scratcher so can only put it down to the balance of seasoned bodies they wanted on the field.

Balta is gifted athletically and Dimma has stated in the past the could be anything, and the club due to personnel issues and juggling the team balance has tried him out of defence to see what they could uncover.

I don’t mind this thinking, as it is the same thinking that has lead to Rioli killing it at half back, and others like Baker and even Short making meaningful contributions in other areas of the ground where we’re not used to seeing them.

He has shown some signs but of course hasn’t Immediately acclimated to a position that’s difficult to play that he has little experience in.

Will he end up playing there permanently? At this point probably not, but I personally won’t be using it as more evidence that the club doesn’t know what it’s doing or ‘constantly plays players out if position’. I want them to continue to be bold and creative.

Depends on whether the umpire called the mark, I think he did. The Freo player made no effort to stay outside the 5 metre perimeter he just ran in a straight line.
If the umpire called the mark and the player plays on immediately and has a player within the 5 metre perimeter that is 50 metres. That's what the rule is for, so if a player wants to move the ball quickly he isn't hampered by someone too close to the mark.

I think if we were going to rort the system we wouldn't have taken Miller off who had been very good all night.
Secondly every time a Richmond player gets injured and Dimma gets asked about it at the post game presser he says he doesn't have details or he doesn't know. Coaches haven't got time to get briefed on every injury between the end of the game and the press conference

I think we will have to agree to disagree Tiger76
All good teams and coaching panels are bold and creative. I dont think we are any better at all in that area.

What we are oustanding at - these last 2 years - is losing close games and poor execution, wasted inside 50 entries. I put that down to teaching and development 100%.

Geelong's ability to win close matches and not make a lot of these basic mistakes we seem to thrive on, is part of why they are thereabouts year in year out. Same for Sydney.
It;s why Freo are on the way up and Collingwood too - b/c they are being taught and developed better, playing to a game style that suits.

This club, these last 2-3 years has lost some very good operators. Whilst I dont subscribe to Dimma being shown the door, we are a 2016 club that needs much better help for him.

Also.. and sorry last post on this, I could go on with players errors. Not just cherry picking these 2-3.

we are putting together a absalute incredible season 12 consecutive games where our worst result is 6 point loss, these close losses are unbelievable ,if we miss the 8,its our own fault as we should be top 4.

Soldo took on a top 4 ruckman in Darcy and kept him honest. Best contribution from Ivan for a few weeks. Looked more like the 2019 version. The two ruckman taking on the overlap running a couple if times was some light relief.

Agree to disagree, as I disagree with most of your last post, although I understand where it’s coming from.

Especially the part where you state that we’re a 2016 club; sheesh.

we had some pearlers last year too.

West coast last year - 22 points up halfway through the last, lost by 4.
Pies last year - 20 points up halfway through the last, lost by 16
2.10 kicked against the saints LY.
there's a few more.

NQR time at the Tigers. Sure, the champs are aging warriors, but more to it.

For anyone wondering if the clock didn’t expire on Balta I was at the ground. On two massive scoreboards that Balta could have sneaked a glance at there was a timer counting down. It
Hit zero and he still hadn’t started his run in when it went 3 seconds past. Unbelievably poor game awareness.

I was telling my mate knowing our luck he will kick it out on the full to not get a score and we managed to come up with a new way.

Again on expected scores we won easily reinforcing as other posters say we are butchering easy chances and/or opposition are kicking difficult ones.

It’s a W/L business but as Hardwick said in presser we are basically not getting what we are generating in terms of results.

Can’t remember a more frustrating run of five weeks. Absolutely outrageous stretch of losses and draws where they almost all should have gone the other way.

And vs WCE we couldn’t miss. We were slotting them from everywhere.
