Game Day Tigers v Demons

JVR is a second year KPF who has made his way into a team that is contending for a premiership. We all know bigs take longer to develop. He looks to be doing well.

The bloke we took instead is a flanker (of which we have millions) who has not looked like cracking for a game; granted he is injured at the moment. With our KPF stocks thinning out due to the ageing of Jack and Tom, JVR would have been a great fit. Brown is a easily replaceable.

Hindsight I know but right now it looks as if we erred. Just don't get why we select so many flankers. If they were genuine mids it'd be more understandable.

It was just a no-brainer, Rids, and I said it at the time. Anyone who doesn't see this is as blind and dumb as our recruiters. And hey should get used to JVR kicking goals against us for the next 10+ years, rather than for us. Enjoy. Think about that.

Melbourne have got a great recruiting staff. They have consistently nailed their picks since 2014. They don't seem afraid to draft for needs either rather than just ranking like we seem too. Van Rooyen will devolp into a similar player to Oscar Allen. Great recruiting by them. Old mate Matt Clarke drafted Coleman Jones before Allen and Tom Brown before Van Rooyen. Get those picks right and our future looks a lot better.

And to think, Melbourne are gonna get Freo’s 1st and 2nd picks in this year’s Draft too.

Right now they’d go into the 2023 Draft with something like 6, 17, 24 and 35.

Mansell, never been a fan,at best average afl.player surely he goes, when we start celebrating not getting a 10 goal.hiding, then we know we are bottom 4.
Nothing to be happy about with 1 win from 6 games.

I think what we're really seeing is their best players are at the peak of their prime and ours are exiting or past their prime. They'll have the same issues as us when it happens to their best players. Suddenly their kids wont look so good playing next to declining stars.

You can do a list of draft picks gone wrong for every club. Its not helpful.
What annoys me is the habit we have of trying to convert players. Last year we stuffed Shorty up royally by putting Daniel on the backline. Daniel is performing an easier role with aplomb.
My issue is that week after week for a year and six games, we have put up with a panicky and wobbly forward line, costing us game after game.
Daniel Rioli's value to the team is his composure and awareness on the forward line to bring others into the game as well as provide defensive pressure for opposition kickouts.
How many games do we have to lose in the same manner before we see this.

Further, we need to work out how to get some value out of Dusty. I have no idea how to do that. To a lesser extent, for Cotchy, the end has come a little quicker than we had all hoped. We love our dynamic duo to bits, but the game can be cruel.
Jack Reiwoldt is made of steel. Every Tiger loves Jackmond. He can play as long as he wants as far as I'm concerned.

I reckon we miss Shedda and his impact on the brothers, especially Shai. You just can't replace what he did for the team.

We always knew our game style of chaotic running and ferocity was the toughest way to play the game. The banged up bodies of Vlossy, Dion and Grimesy are also taking their toll.

I really thought we could do a Geelong 22 this year.
Let's just hope that by the time we get the topliners fit and back in the team, that we are still a mathematical chance for 2023.

Just back from the game and read the last few pages of the drivel on here. Jesus, @Mr T. please bring back the 2 way ignore feature haha.

I thought we were pretty good tonight. 1st half very good, thought we got on top in the ruck and the clearances, some of Ryans ruck work was excellent, his taps go where our mids go, but they must have discussed that at half time, and went with the outbody so instead of jumping with him, both Gawn and Grundy used their body a lot more and they out strengthed him in the 2nd half but some excellent signs for the future if he can continue to build his upper body strength up.

1st half we were very good, but during the 3rd we seemed to go back to those short stabby kicks coming out of defence (and did so in the 4th too) which have absolutely killed us over the last 4 weeks. Defensive half turnovers seems like we've spoken about it after every game this year and yet again we gave them easy goals from stupid defensive half turnovers and its consistently our seasoned defenders doing it (Vlastuin / Rioli were definitely at fault for a number of easy goals to the Dees today).

Dimma stuffed up at 3 quarter time. Whilst we were poorer in the 3rd compared to the 1st half, I felt that our structures were holding up well but we were executing poorly (similar narrative to the last 4 games) but then he went all nuclear and took off a tall against 1 of the best ruck partnerships in the game, with 2 very good tall defenders and a tall forward line. Was a horror call. Balta did nothing forward or in the ruck. With the 1 less tall, we repeatedly kicked to a 2 on 1 for Jack in the forward line like the bad old days and without the tall down back, we exposed Tylar Young way too much and JVR got off the loose. I feel like that 4th quarter showing was mainly as a result of that 1 choice as we were absolutely killed in the air in the final quarter. To make it worse, he then sent extra bad kicks into the back half (Mansell and Hugo) and pushed Bakes in desperation to get something to work, and they were both exposed for their poor kicking skills.

I'll judge the team off the 1st 3 quarters for tonight as I feel we made a massive error in judgement with the sub tonight and paid a heavy price for it, but there were a lot of encouraging signs.

Ryan - big tick
I thought the mids were a lot better tonight. We had Shai and Dusty through the midfield a lot more than we have seen recently and that gave some extra dynamism to it
I thought Young had a good 1st 3 quarters and then was exposed badly in the final quarter as he didn't have enough support with the sub decision but he was very good up to that point
Short - wow - haven't we missed him. He's certainly an important cog in the way that we want to move the ball

Cumbo though. Seems like another Bolton at the moment, great with kicking goals in open play, but seems to have the yips with set shots. I didn't notice this last year, thought he was good from set shots from memory but gee he's dropped off a bit in that regard.

BTW - MRJ should have been out of the team anyway, was not good tonight. Defensively, yes he chases, but when he has it, he always tries to do way too much, when he should move the ball quickly, he constantly wants to zip and zag and then ends up over pressuring himself with his disposal or invaribly he gives it off to someone else under pressure.

Our list balance leaves a lot to be desired.

We are lacking a medium marking forward. Someone that can take the pressure off Jack and Lynch.

Samson was great tonight. He is much better is much better in the dry.

Cumberland great but needs to stay in games longer. But his defensive efforts were great all night.

Dusty back to 80% of his best. If he kicked 2 goals we would be saying at his best.

Thought Cotch was important up forward.

Taranto got more ball than Oliver and 10 tackles. Beast

Hopper I thought set us up well. Got a knock at the wrong time. No 50 in that but.

Now the negatives:
- Vlastuin. Not standing up as I would expect. If he's not turning it over via brain fades he's loosing his feet at critical stages

- McIntosh. I know he tries had bit he never looked dangerous tonight. 9 touches. He should be providing a third marking target forward or intercepting back. Think he needs a spell.

- Mansell. WTF did he do. Nice goal but 4 touches and 1 tackle. Doesn't cause panic like MRJ. Doesn't look dangerous. Just not sure what's there.
Mansell,miller are junk

Sh!ts me everytime. Wasted energy. Better that he's out so he can learn from this and provide an extra spot for someone else.

When he's back fit, he needs to go back to the 2's and work through that. Over use kills forward momentum and thats what he does. He needs to go back tot he 2's and try and actually dominate the 2's, as he's adding almost nothing to the team at the moment, despite a couple of nice tackles.

I actually thought Cotch was quite good, went missing as most of our team did in the final quarter but I'm putting that quarter down to a shocker from Dimma, but thought he was good in the 1st 3. His ball use into the F50 was very good playing on the HFF.

He always does

I have a massive man crush on V but he is not the player he was.
I would trade him
thank you so much but it's time to rejig.
Diagree on trading V - he has'nt had a good year so far, but one does'nt lose their ability.

Confidence however is a different matter.

And age.

Interesting game.

Clearly some improvement. There was more cohesion at times and the kicks across the back line were working better. Plus, it was quite noticeable that players were kicking to team mates who were on the move. Sometimes it looked to me like our players were deliberately kicking to where the receiving player should have been going, which I like because we too often kick to a player who is not moving and the pass gets intercepted.

Far better cohesion for most of the game.

We were holding on in the third quarter and just remained ahead at 3/4 time but the last quarter was a bit of a quandary. I thought we were getting smacked badly in clearances but looking at the stats we have more inside 50s in the last than they did and the same number of scoring shots.

Yes, we should have been further ahead earlier in the game but we were playing one of the premiership favourites and we are not at that level. Missing some very gettable shots does suck the life out of momentum, as does cheap turnovers leading to opposition goals. We have a lot of work to do there. Some bloody goal kicking practice wouldn't go astray.

Cotchin was good in spurts, looks like he just can't do it for the whole game any more.

Martin is a huge worry. Showed a couple of signs but really does not look like he wants to impose himself, not sure what is wrong there but attitude and hunger do look to be a problem.

Samson Ryan clearly took a step forward tonight. He was always going to be a slow burn but is improving.

I thought Miller was ok, he was competing in the ruck, needs some marking practice (not alone there) but was ok.

Taking Miller off for Hugo was a disastrous move. Completely unbalanced the side and Van Rooyen took full advantage. Young needs an apology for that. Plus, just on a team structure point of view, let alone talent the way it looks at the moment, why the F**ck did we not draft Van Rooyen? It makes so little sense, even if you thought Brown was better, we simply didn't need another player like that and we have been staring down the barrel of retiring key forwards for a number of years. Completely baffling decision.

What was with taking Balta out of defence, If there's one thing we should have learned is that Balta can be very good in defence, just don't send him elsewhere. He thinks too slowly and does not have footy IQ. Defence is the only place for him.

I really can't see it with Hugo and Mansell, depth or delist material from what I can see. They both need a lot of improvement to justify their places on the list.

Melbourne played the way good teams do, they stayed close enough and turned it on when they needed to win. The fact we got called "plucky' in the media is a huge worry, you get described as plucky when no-one expected you to get close.

Time to put a rocket under a few players, that includes you Shai, time to farewell some premiership heroes at the end of the year, and time to keep giving the youngsters experience. This season is not a write off, we play like that against Footscray, Carlton and even Sydney we would have won at least 2 of those games.

Need to back up a much improved performance with a decent win against Gold Coast at Chernobyl next week.

and he's lost 1 - confidence and he is losing age (he can't get that 1 back).

If we don't make finals (I'm still glass half full at the moment) then I'd be floating his name and see what bites personally.

Don’t think Van Rooyen is anything special. Kicked a few goals late on undersized defenders. Did nothing until then.

Melbourne is a one trick pony with Gawn, Oliver, Petracca & Viney. Heaven help them if Gawn gets injured again.
JVR is just a kid showing great signs - including great GK technique unlike our duds. You just named 5 tricks without including Lever or May plus plenty other handy players like Petty, Pickett and Warner. Bit more than one by any sane calculation

How many "tricks" do we have in that category IYO going as well currently?
