Game Day Thread - Tigers V Pies

Outside of Lynch, Rioli was BOG for mine. Was everywhere and kept a cool head in defence all game
Been in absolute career-best form this season, no question about it, his confidence is sky-high and his skill level above his head and below his knees are both now very consistent, happy for him.

Looked like a Richmondy win.

Let’s all just sit back and appreciate that this is the best we’ve looked since the 2020 flag.

Heat on the ball, fast, ballistic footy with ball in hand.

I tell ya, a little crumbing spice in F50 goes a long way.

MoJu, Gibcus, Rioli, Balta, Bolton, Shorty all showing why they will be nucleus from this point forward.

We needed them to step up and it’s happening. Had to with the ageing top end.

With genuinely good kids bubbling away in the VFL.

I was frustrated by some of the skill errors and brain fades but they were all there 2017-2020 too. It’s in our DNA, a byproduct of our preferred game style.

With Prestia and Vlastuin to come at 4-4 we’re looking good.

Not sure if anyone has said it, but did anyone notice the Collingwood supporter on the bigscreen @ the G? I think it was the 3rd qtr, but most importantly, what the 2 x young Collingwood supporters were doing behind him?

Surprised they left it on the screen for everybody to watch for so long before transferring the live supporter footage.

What truly pisses me off is that I just knew that would happen, even during our dominating years we let teams "hang around" in games they had no right to be in.

The fact its so predicatable is what is seriously concerning, because we see it happen far to often and consistently, the coaching staff needs to address this and find out from the players WHY they believe it happens.
I get it but we just won by 100 points the week before and DIDN’T relent. Against the dogs we played to the end very well too.

No team does this every week.

There is also another team out there and at some stage they will usually have a patch where things go their way.

Hopefully the percentage isn’t crucial at seasons end but no pattern here this year IMO.

How good is Saturday afternoon footy? 3121 was heaving before the game.

Felt like old Richmond style of footy lead by kids and some vets.

We hunted, then just pushed the ball forward. Effort win, not skill.

Best day.

Gee it’s depressing reading the game day thread.

Would think we got flogged by 10 goals if you didn’t know the end result.

That was a good win against an improving side that has been competitive every week so far this year.

Nice to be at the footy on a Saturday arvo, little earlier than the old days when it all started at 2.10 or 2.15, bit good nonetheless.

A solid win against a team who are improving. Yes it would be nice to win by 60, or even 100 like last week. But we weren't playing witches' hats this week, Collingwood are decent, not top 4 by any means, but middle of the ladder and will give higher teams some trouble on their day.

Overall I thought, solid, not spectacular. We were good in defence, people keep talking about how we would have been in trouble if the other side kicked straighter. But we force teams to kick from angles, the reality is that you miss more when you are on an angle. This is no coincidence, it is good defence.

We were ok from clearances, should have been better but the advantage in the number of hit outs wasn't reflected in their quality. Good to get the dominance of hit outs but need to work on making them hit outs to advantage.

What we do need to work on is the turn overs from around half back and the centre line. We seem to struggle to get much past the middle when coming out of defence. It's ok if we can get some overlap run but we often get stuck on the flank or wing and that is where you see the attempts to go sideways to find space. I can understand why we do this but the accuracy has to be pin point and the judgement has to be spot on as the opposition will always be looking to cut off the ball. A definite area we need to improve, but I suspect every team looks at this intently as the modern game strategies make it difficult to come out of defence unless you have just turned over the ball.

Every team is in trouble when the ball goes forward in a hurry. This is especially the case with a turnover since all the players are running to where the ball looks to be going. I really don't think we are any worse than other teams on this score, where you need to do work is preventing the turnovers. Easier said than done but more work required.

But, like last week, this did look more like a Richmond game. Quick movement forward and lots of run. But the game has changed over the last couple of years and there is a need for a bit more careful ball movement especially coming out of defence after a behind or intercept mark. When the opposition is set up (ie, when it isn't a turnover) you can't just surge forward because the risk of losing possession and leaving the defence wide open is now too high. So, Richmond game, but evolving slowly to the changes of our constantly evolving sport.

Good to see Dustin back. Clearly a bit of Rusty Dusty but he'll blow out the cobwebs a bit and hopefully we'll see him back to his best soon.

Lynch, wow, what a bit of space in the forward line can do for a key forward! The forward line looks a lot better at the moment, Reiwoldt and Lynch separated and dangerous and Lynch clunking marks. Impossible to stop if he can get a little space. A few brain fades and misses, but I'll take that game any day. 3 talls forward with a ruck resting forward doesn't work, keep Balta in defence.

Shedda was clearly more involved and some good signs there. Clearly not close to his best but hopefully a slow build starting to happen for him.

Mansell didn't look up to AFL level but Vlastuin should be back next week which is a big upgrade.

MRJ, gee, I don't know but . . . is he looking a little like his father at the moment? He really can heap on the pressure and turn the play around. Also he can run and harass and dodge, great prospect.

Thought Graham was ok, lots of possessions, Cotch good, Gibcus - how is this guy a first year player?

Castagna runs a lot and covers a lot of ground but he must be looking behind him at some of the youngsters knocking on the door. Will likely survive but must be under pressure for his place.

Pity Stack didn't get a run, needs the game time at AFL level, thought he was ok last week just a bit off in his positioning and kept being where the ball wasn't, experience helps that.

Always happy to beat the Pies, make no mistake, they are getting better. That peroxide headed small forward of theirs (Gin something?) just seems to drop a little when running past other players, need to be very careful with a player like that, looks to be getting coat hangered on purpose (and with a head that invites punching not a bad tactic if you can handle the impact), just have to tackle low on him. Hoskin-Elliott's mark was right in front of us, great mark soaring over a pack, gotta pay that, looked amazing from a few metres away.

How *** were Moore and Howe today. They played 10+ metres off Lynch and Riewoldt all game long.

If I were Fly I’d be spending some time with them on Monday in the video room.

particular pleasure was taken when mentioning Darcy Moore getting torn apart... and he agrees ..
