Game Day-Scratch match Tiges v Norf

Hoping to see the Cummerbund in action from round one. Pressure, intensity, creativity, stuff just always seems to happen whenever the ball is in his vicinity. Got pinged late in the game for that run down tackle on their fifty metre arc, but geez it was a blistering chase.
In hopper /Taranto puts Cotchin forward with Dusty MRJ, maybe Bolton

Good problems to have

Watched again, first viewing confirmed, very, very underwhelming.
He had a bad game. It was his first at the level. I had him pushing his way into next weeks team and then possibly round 1, but now ??

Our other key defenders and those who sometimes play there, were also a bit off. Balta maybe broke even but Grimes and Tarrant didn’t show up.

As we are aware, the Carlton tall forwards x3, all pose a significant threat.

Much will depend on availability and our showing next week, but come Carlton, I’d still have Young edging Tarrant. (You have to have faith).

As of yesterday round 1 maybe,
B Broad Young Grimes
HB Vlastuin Balta Rioli
C McIntosh Prestia Pickett/Short
HF Cumberland Cotchin Bolton
F Martin Lynch Riewoldt
R Nankervis Hopper Taranto
I/C Baker Miller Rioli M Jr Short
Sub Clarke.
TBC Gibcus.
(Graham Ross Tarrant and Sonsie all missing).

Clearly your expectations at this stage of his career are a lot higher then mine. Made a couple of mistakes and needs to get a bit more physical but I thought he did enough in a few passages to show what the finished product will be. Really excited what he’ll be in 12-24 months.

You really do seem to have some sort of axe to grind with Tarrant. You were on his case the entirety of last season (despite the fact he was very good for most of the season) and now you want a guy, as exciting as he may be, who was bascially very average in his 1st attempt at the level, to go 1 on 1 with Harry Mackay or Charlie Curnow. Seriously??? There is ZERO chance that Young lines up in place of Tarrant in Round 1 if both are fit.

Young may have a future in the game, we don't know yet, but he isn't rolling into our Round 1 team.

What didn’t you like Scoop Dog ?
Constantly behind, might be one of those guys who doesn’t look like he is trying but is but don’t look like he was trying, Sheezel lead him to so many contests, didn‘t link up. I expected much more effort. I’m not writing him off but he is a long way off in my books.

First hit out and some good and some bad.

Negatives
The biggest concern for me once again is big Nank. Yep gives his all but his CB work and stoppages around ground are such a negative for us. He literally gives the opposition an advantage. Doesnt get off the ground and continually gives opponent first use of ball. Going to cost us this year against the better teams.

Concerned pushing Cotch fwd is going to cost Noah his spot. Would be a bad move if it happens. Noah has X factor and gives a completely different aspect to our fwd line.
Midnight oil.

Fair enough.

I called them boyish moments, a harsher call would be to say soft (which is apparently Dimma's knock). Has class. Is young. Did some good things. Has elements to work with and to work on. Think he's a couple of years away from being a regular and likely to only get a game or three this year.

After watching the game again, to be totally honest, we looked crap.
before anyone says im over reacting, im not saying the season is shot, so relax.
im just saying that in this insignificant praccy match, that we looked *smile*

hopefully next week we look better, and start building towards round 1

Tarranto & Prestia elite.
Juddy a ripper game and sign of things to come, I had him penciled in for the bench for round 1 and this game franks it.
My other boy Tylar Young had a poor game.
Very promising from Samson Ryan, I liked his grabs more than his goals, not concerned about a couple of dud set shots today as I know he is a verry, very good kick.
I really liked Tom Brown today.

Just a further observation on Samson Ryan after watching again on replay, he was obviously playing the Lynch role in his absence so not only did he kick 2 goals from 4 shots and played up to the wing and took that good contested mark, he also deliberately spoilt the ball from a pack situation front and square that resulted in the Cotch goal in period 2 and he also absolutely crashed the pack in period 3 where MJ roved it only to hit the post.
I call that impressive from a still pretty raw prospect, it's our forward mantra if you can't mark it bring it to ground and what our tall forwards are trained to do 90% of the time.
Hope in the VFL he get's plenty of ruck duties to round him out.

that spine is looking a bit frail... I woulda though Tarrant doing an Astbury role would toughen up the back like (no disrespect on Young and Balta - both hopefully turn into Rance/Astbury/Scotty Turner hybrids with Bowden's smarts and Cameron's kick - but Young has raw and Balta's been bit wobbly lately)

You may be right about Young and how long he will take. But equally his age, his relative ‘newness’ to the game plus his progress to date suggest that he has improvement left, and that it may come quickly. Melb will be a step up and if he is going to have any chance of early selection he will have to improve dramatically.

As to your views that our man 6, was very good last season I obviously disagree. I know stats can be misleading but I didn’t take much of an interest until he came to us and so no where else to go.

On the club website his career stats, compared to his first year with us, show a massive drop off in his game in all respects accept for 1, spoils.

As a team we had some success last year together with some close results against us, and a lot of frustration - imo all representing more support for Tarrant last season, than he had previously enjoyed at North. Despite that help and playing in what I believe was a terrific backline, hampered by a failing midfield, Tarrant’s stats last year reflect a significant drop off in his career form.

As for this season, he is now I think 34. Up to you but I can’t really think his ability to get to the ball, is about to improve.

Certainly there was nothing on display yesterday to suggest it.

All reasonable Tyger. I just think this reliance on our man 6 as possibly doing an Astbury, is based on a widely accepted myth.
Maybe in 2016 when he won a b&f, but not now.

Just watching the game. Period 5 they are talking about forward/ midfield X factor for Richmond and players missing. Laughable that they don’t mention Bolton. I don’t even think they mentioned him earlier when they were talking about players missing. It’s not a huge issue but just shows they are scraping the bottom of the barrel re commentators.

Samson definitely showed a bit yesterday other than his set shot kicking. But one passage of play didn’t please me where he elected to go Joe the Goose whilst McKay attacked the ball in the air, marked unopposed and took off down the ground making him look silly.
Must attack every contest. Hate for him to pick and choose a la Joe Daniher

Haha yes I was laughing at that. They spoke about the players North were missing and then mentioned ours, but missed Bolton completely. I'm sure he'll remind everyone who he is during the season.
