Game Day RD 17 - Tigers V Suns

Its pretty obvious why we give up.leads late in games and our club is trying to address it,it's simply our lack of quality mids along with midfield continuity.
This! When the going is good and the real pressure isn't on yet we do well. At the crunch when it requires that nous and toughness in the form of turning the swing back around who did we have? The only recognised tough ball-winning midfielder we had was Prestia. Graham is 2nd string to me. Bolton is a pinch-hitter, Dow has a lot to learn. Edwards, Aarts, Short, Baker all no for that position. Cotch and Dusty out but getting old. Guys like RCD and Ross just haven't come on to the level we need. Can anyone see any other youngsters playing that have that capability? I'm thinking maybe Sonsie but he's starting to look a lot more outside to me. It, and the fact that some of our better players are still unsigned, rings alarm bells.

Miller is no good. Has been on the list for 5 years and played 5 games. He would have played more if he was any good. Has been overtaken at a rapid rate by a first year skinny defender. Not a good sign.
Miller and tarrant vs Chol and casboult and Day. Their talls kicked 4 goals. Chol 3 who Miller was against. Did Miller cost us the game? I'd say no. He goes about as well as gibcus lately. Unfortunately for Miller we bring in tarrant and gibcus. Miller's games in the VFL have been good. Lots of disposal. Miller can kick and mark. I'd like to retain him. Aging Jack up fwd, maybe gibcus or balta play there. Tarrant is actually going quite well.
Last night was a flash back to 2021 all the depth playing but look at Brisbane this week..8 outs. We need to be developing depth. Miller defers to senior players a bit like Ross when Dusty is playing.
I thought Cumberland's debut was fine. I'd sign him up too

Nah. 13 would get us in I reckon. Especially if the Saints, Dogs, Port, GC drop the odd game. Easier said than done of course.
Realistically we're fighting for 8th spot. 4 wins out of last 6 should get us there but ironically GC become a big danger. They're only less than 8 percentage points behind and still play WC and North and Bombers. Will be hard for the Saints with their draw. Bulldogs and Port with a chance. It's still in our ball court. We must put North, Hawks and Bombers away and Port game in Adelaide suddenly becomes a huge game.

Lucky the Dogs lost then. Some were pulling for the Swans on Friday coz we needed to have a vision of a top 4 finish coz we were absolute certainties to make the 8.

I think we can still make it but it’ll be real hard and require improved and a more sustained performance, each and every week.

I get that but every game bar one we have been in winning positions.
Our last quarter's have been diabolical.
We could quite easily be entrenched in the top 4.
We have lost our mental edge.
Sides know it and smell blood.
I thought that was the case regarding last quarters but it's actually not true. Other than being smashed in the last in Rd 1 & 3 and this one, we have won (majority) or been close to winning the last quarter. I suspect it's been our 3rd quarters that has caused the most damage this year.

How come the Druggies have taken D'Ambrosio and Durham off us. Didn't we see something there?
Massimo is a great talent, but in a position we have a glut of currently… we knew enough to vfl list, but the spot wasn’t yet open this year to full list.

Well that's ended up being an absolute *smile* fest of a game. Would rather have simply copped a ten goal belting than choke on a lead n get pipped with an after the siren goal.
Become rather a bad habit this year choking late in games n completely losing structure n composure so I reckon that even if we somehow manage to make the final eight. We'll have no influence or impact.

Couple of major issues that we desperately need to rectify before next year n the first one is our arrogant brain dead lack of discipline. There's a fine line between playing tough uncompromising footy n being a bunch of petulant *smile* heads. Our mob's firmly in the petulant *smile* head category at the moment n been there for near on two years. Fifty metre penalties, down field frees n suspensions for cheap, stupid, pathetic n insignificant infringements cost us big time in game after game.
Another issue is carrying incompetent or ineffective players over and over again. Obviously Georgie boy is our banner carrier in this regard at the moment, his last two years have been seriously ordinary to the point where, if he was an oppo player you'd want him to get the ball so you could laugh at him *smile* up. At least with Aarts we all know he's only fringe depth at senior level n we simply hope he may be competent which he was, when we're desperate. Unfortunately Shedda is cooked, we're carrying him to 300 games but it should be as the medical sub at best. All year long he's had the odd moment of Shedda scissor hands brilliance n then somehow become the invisible man for the rest of the game. Soldo's another who's probably had a few more games than he should have this year, would have preferred to see Delilah get a couple of games to help set him up for the future.

Injuries n crap are totally messing up the important end of this season so I hope we get smart n feed some games into youngsters instead of shuffling in or retaining mature hacks.
Cummerbund almost had a monster first game, should have nailed four or five competed well n needs game time, easily replaces Georgie n hopefully we get Balta back to support Jaaack as the second key forward.
With both Nank n Soldo out we've no choice but to push some games into Delilah no matter what.
Miller needs to be kept in the side, there's half a dozen games left to see if he's got another level in him.
Shedda needs to be the medi sub n perhaps look at Clarke or Sonsie for a game or two.

Bloody MoJu needs to pull his finger out too. Chasing arse all over the ground might be fun and exciting to watch but FFS he actually needs to find his own bit of the footy sometimes too, kid is super reactionary at the moment n doesn't instigate much of anything.

As bad as the end was, and we only have ourselves to blame for so many mistakes, early in the 3rd I was thinking we must be pretty good to be comfortably beating a finals contender while missing our:
Best player
Best KPD
Best KPF ( after 10 mins)
2nd best mid
A great mid sized defender
Plus Lambert, Gibcus and Ross.
We then finished the game with out Best ruck on the bench, and our remaining ruck with a broken finger.

Some other teams might be called 'brave' on the same circumstances.

We can still win it we just need luck with injuries. Our best is better than any, only the Dees at their best rival us. Top 4 out of the question, we need to engineer another 4 wins. 12 wins and % may even do it. Norf/Hawks are locks. Bombers should be also.

Just need some luck with injuries.

lets review the impact on Richmond's ladder position of the swans v bulldogs result at the end of the season

my prediction is that if we are battling for 7th or 8th, a swans win was preferable
if we are in contention for 5th or 6th, a bulldogs win was preferable
lets see how it plays out

I'm as filthy as everyone else is on last night's loss. Can only imagine how the players and coaches must be feeling.

Many of the posts on here have well summed up what happened; and our ongoing issues.

Without having a clue what's going on behind the scenes and who is working hard/who is not - it's pretty much the sum of many parts IMO.

1. Drafting: Two of our early picks have been *smile* - RCD and Dow are total busts. RCD is somewhat forgivable (every club has a bad drafting pick); Dow isnt easy to forgive since we had evidence with his brother Paddy. From the 2nd year, neither of them looked remotely capable. Every time I posted this, I'd get told I was being harsh on our young players. Neither have shown even 3-4 good parts of play in a VFL game worth persisting with. I know we've done ok with rookie picks, but this doesnt automatically mean the early pick *smile* ups are acceptable.

2. Development: IMO we either dont seem to be teaching the young players how to handle situations in game - or are teaching them not very well. Our development has always appeared worse to me than other clubs - even in our good years. To me, this area is the No 1 priority, followed by a review of our assistant coaches.

3. The MC selection 'head-shakes' continue. The selection of BOTH Castagna and Aarts in games is a complete *smile* up by the MC, even with lots of injuries. We had Clarke who can do as much as Castagna. I think they choose Aarts for work rate. Not sure. But JC and JA together is a disaster. Anyone remember the 2 point loss to GWS a few yrs ago where Castagna kicked 5 points. Is anyone teaching him how to kick. What about more *smile* goal practice for him? Are coaches even teaching goal practice, I remember Jack saying he spent extra time years ago with JC and Dan Butler on goal kickng. What the *smile* are the assistants doing?

When I think of our assistant coaches, I sometimes think about how Gil and the boys club at AFL used to say assistant coaches are overpaid. Who knows but gee the mistakes we make over and over again tell me we learn nothing.

4. Lynch. I love Tom. Deserves everything he gets paid, major contributor to 2 flags. Had many clubs wanting his signature, he chose us. Love him.
But *smile* me, is he personally doing everything possible on his recovery week in and week out? Is he doing extra sessions or anything to stregthen his hammies? It seems like every 3rd week, he has a hammy issue. Personally, I wonder if Tommy is doing anything extra.

Could go on. You have all posted similar. It's become not only embarassing how we lose these games OVER and OVER. But it gives every team hope even if they are down 7 goals against us moving forward.

Brave losses might be our theme....Our fast starts and big first halves were our 2016 style. 2017 we'd start slow and work into matches. A la Gold Coast last night, 2020 GF. Most winning teams don't win 4 qtrs week in week out. How to manipulate that on a game day is beyond me.
Suns went into the game without King and Rankin. But our injuries do seem to be focussed. Mids one week, rucks the next. Nank wasn't winning ruck before he was injured. Soldo is better playing lone ruck. Ryan for game 2 next week, hopefully Balta is back. Resting Gibcus and playing Miller didn't cost us the game. Aarts and George and MRJ didn't do enough. Lambert is virtually non existent. Dusty a shadow of his former self. half a good game and then injury. Cotch having a good year, ditto Ross.
None of our OUTs are COVID related so have been lucky by comparison.
Shoulda rested Gibcus a game or 2 ago, shoudda debuted Noah C a game or 2 ago. ditto Ryan. Maybe Miller and Noah C aren't up to it and will be dropped ahead of George and Aarts.

Again, how about we stay in the now and present for a while and focus on just getting into the 8 first and stop worrying about top 4 and now, 5th or 6th ?
because whether or not we make the 8 depends upon the future results

Dont make the 8 lm happy jeez we pissed some games up this year...Titch retire and Martin move on ( big picture here) draft choices....
Can bounce quickly .

anyway, back to this thread, i think the loss was caused by our bottom six were not good enough

you can argue about her our bottom 6 were:

take your pick form this lot:

rioli
miller
soldo
dow
cumberland
aarts
castagna
edwards

you can carry 2 or 3 of them, but this way too many

and then we had injuries to nank and lynch

Forget 5th and 6th. We're fighting for 7th or 8th against 5 other teams. Not all are going to have a shocking last 6 games. We will need to win 4 or 5. We've only won 3 of the last 6, injuries mounting, let's just focus on North who nearly toppled Pies.

Well that’s three times this year my brain has kept me up with the ‘what if this’, ‘what if that’ moments. Stupid 50s and lay down misere goals missed in all of them.

2nd spot on ladder vs 8th.

Does your head in.

On a holiday in a tropical resort and my limited EQ knows that it’s stupid that a game of footy can wreck the mood. But there you go - I guess this is what makes the highs the highs.

I even came up with some hare brained notion that Hardwick basically overruled everyone else to get rid of Butler at the end of ‘19 and keep Castagna and that’s why he plays him all the time to prove everyone else wrong. Clearly I’m still in the denial and bargaining phase. Hilarious.

In terms of the here and now and just simply making the 8, despite you saying otherwise, it was a good thing the Dogs lost. You keep going on about how high up we can finish in the 8.

Given our performances so far this year, how about we just make it first huh ?
