Nice summary Mr Poshman.
Firstly, I have to say, Thursday night football sucks. I am on leave at the moment and just got back to Melbourne yesterday, makes it so much easier to go on a Thursday night. A crowd of 50k between 2 old rivals both fighting for a place in finals just shows what a farce this is. Without the supporters willing to turn up the game loses support, you look after the grass roots who turn up if you want to maintain the popularity of the code and keep the money rolling on from TV rights.
Bloody awful night weather wise, got rained on a couple of times. At least no wet rear end, I take a face washer and have a nice dry seat to sit on.
We were clearly the better team on the night. Led all night but while Carlton are good, their injuries are significant and they might make top 4 but I don't think they are contenders, yet. Carlton are on the way back up, but not quite there yet, if they play their cards right they are a year or two off being genuine contenders. You don't rise up in one year, you build. We may have won 2017 after a woeful 2016, but the previous few years were the build. The competition is very even and it takes time to build and even then you don't always get a flag, just look at Port, so close yet so far.
On Cripps, yes, a very good player. I am a bit amazed he has come out so well this year, thought he had been carrying Carlton for too long and was a bit worn out, but he has performed very well this year. But, geez he gets away with throwing the ball a lot. I saw one where he did it right in front of the umpire and no call.
Certainly a lot of frustration over this game. Passes which were very inaccurate, dump kicks which land in the opposition's lap etc. Certainly need a few players to lift. Shedda is a star and I hope not far off hitting some form. Ralphsmith some bad disposals. Cotch has clearly lost some pace but still goes in hard. Shai lairises too much, that around the corner set shot kick he missed was a shocker. I know all teams screw up passes but we do need to work on some basic skills, just need a bit more polish at times. I, too, was frustrated when we thought Carlton got a goal from the ball rebounding rather than being punched through. Plus, and this was evident not only in round 1 this year but I've seen it before, our positioning around packs leaves a lot to be desired. Not defending the ball which goes through to the back of the pack on a wet night is nonsensical. A related factor is too many players going for the mark and too few staying down to get or defend the crumb.
Against this were some good signs. In the second quarter Carlton won a couple of clearances both of which resulted in quick goals. That is where we have lost the plot and conceded 4, 5 or 6 goals this year. Tonight we managed to stop this after 2 goals, much better. Carlton came at us in the last but we were able to respond and the ball was in our forward half for a lot of the last quarter. We actually won the last quarter, only by a point but we have lost a lot of last quarters this year so that is a definite plus.
Our inside 50 efficiency needs to improve. Yes, it was a wet night, but 34% scores from inside 50 entries is an area we need to improve. Good thing we got it in there so often, 76 to 51 is a good effort but we need more from our inside 50s. Carlton improved their inside 50 efficiency later in the game, early on it was similar to ours. Defence was good but this is where we need to make sure easy clearances are prevented as much as possible.
Barely noticed the umpires until later in the game. They weren't too bad. I don't mind the occasional clanger, what I hate is inconsistency. Thought there were a few holding the ball decisions, both ways, where the player with the ball barely had prior opportunity, but at least this went both ways. One thing I saw in the first quarter was Balta (I think) running for the ball and grabbed by the arm - no free - which explains why we saw a player last week really adding a vat load of mayo when it happened, because the umpires often don't pay some really obvious holding the man calls. The incident where the ARC overturned a goal when Broad touched it was simply farcical. The number of very obvious incidents, or incidents where the goal umpire was in perfect position and saw exactly what happened, which they do send to the ARC is frustrating. But to then not send an incident which was difficult to the ARC, you really wonder at times. That was an obvious situation to use the ARC, Broad was not so far out from the goal so the vision was better than some they do send to the ARC. FFS, the ARC exists, is used in situations where it really isn't needed, not calling for a review when the incident is hard to see is mystifying. The number of throws you could see from the crowd and which occurred right in front of an umpire looking straight at it was ridiculous, throwing is a scourge on the game and they need to tighten this up a lot.
I'll take the win and a few positives from the game, plus a fair bit to work on. Geelong will be a big challenge next week, they look to be playing better than we are and to really contend we need to beat the likes of Geelong.
