Footy to Return

Reported on TV tonight . If crowds are allowed . 20,000 only

I can live with that. members can go into a grand final style ballot for every home game with maybe 10% going to away team members. my line of thinking has always been slowly increasing crowd numbers as the season goes on... something along the lines of this:
- Rounds 2-5 - 1 person for every 5 seats.
- Rounds 6-9 - 1 person for every 4 seats.
- Rounds 10-13 - 1 person for every 3 seats.
- Rounds 14-17 - 1 person for every 2 seats.
- Finals: no restrictions

:(

the government is always providing worst case scenarios to keep the population on their toes. the PM keeps saying 6 months, which is probably not gonna happen now. There is a big hillsong gathering in July that I'm sure will go ahead.

I really can't see the Hubs working, that Sports Illustrated article lays out the issues and they are immense.

This is a contact sport, any hub will need supplies and there will be contact with the outside world.

Unless there is some way to get quick testing, a hub will likely see infections and then what happens? Do we go for herd immunity amongst AFL players? Not a great idea as elite athletes put their bodies under a lot of stress and train to the limit. What happens if a player contracts COVID and dies?

If we can get the infection rate down to the point where we can trace every infection then football could re-start, maybe a few weeks without crowds but the crowds (likely with limits) will need to return after a few rounds otherwise it will be an empty spectacle and the risk of losing supporters would be high.

When are the NRL planning on their hubs? We can see what happens with that.

surrogate animal testing requires the species being tested on share a decent portion of DNA.

I don't understand what you're getting at. It's not 'up to' the players to work for a living if they can, it's an opportunity. If there's some that are so comfortable they don't need the money, then don't make them play, no problem. But nearly all players and people employed within the sport DO need the money. If there's a way for them to safely work, why not? Being away for a couple of months is unfotunate, but shouldn't be a big deal.

There's so many industry affected by this. I don't understand why out of all of these industries AFL footballers are expected to keep going in what will be a *smile* version of the season.

Bit of discussion around that the season will return with an extended road trip format rather than the hub.

Assuming the suppression rate remains solid and travel between states becomes permissible, teams will go for a series of quick fire games.

Eg, we head to Adelaide and play Port, Adelaide and one other Victorian side with all the games played in a 7-10 day block, with two groups operating at once.

Adelaide: Wednesday night: Adelaide v Port; Thursday night: Richmond v Geelong; Friday: No game; Saturday Adelaide v Richmond, Port v Geelong; Sunday/Monday No game; Tuesday: Richmond v Port; Wednesday: Adelaide v Geelong

Perth: Thursday night: WC v Freo; Friday: Bulldogs v Essendon Saturday: No game; Sunday: WC v Bulldogs. Freo v Essendon; Monday/Tuesday: No game; Wednesday: WC v Essendon; Thursday: Freo v Bulldogs.

If you go to ten you can increase the rest day but that will depend on negotiations between the AFLPA and TV networks.

Once a round has finished the teams have a break while the next rounds play, giving them a quasi quarantine period and a recovery before the next round.

Just my personal speculation but I think this makes a lot of sense.

Way, way, way better idea!

Don’t be silly
If they allow 20,000 at a GF
There will be very little club supporters
Most will go to corporate and MCC commitment
Considering Virgin about to go under ,the two clubs in the GF can take the 400 tickets that were going to be allocated to them

I like this plan. Allows the season to finish at a reasonable time of the year thereby not interrupting preparations for next season.

To pull it off, you would expect unlimited interchanges and expanded teams for each game. Good opportunity to get games into some young guys.

Also gives us a footy overdose (e.g. BBL) which I think we all need after this spell.

One thing I would like to see is perhaps moving all games to smaller grounds. Part of the problem with round 1 was the huge empty stands, lacking atmosphere. Imagine if we could play our games at Punt Rd etc. Would look better on TV too

Darwin would be a good hub. The NT gov should be pitching it. Dozens of empty hotels and no community transmission yet. When we get to 0 they can let me in to watch.

apart from players and officials filling a handful of hotels , I can't imagine hubs will do much for local economies.

That pretty much is the Darwin economy. You’d think about 60 people per team at least + acco, meals, transport stadium costs, media. It adds up

Do they have enough Accomadation there?
Players will be stacked up at the caravan park

Virgin haven’t gone under, so you can forget that idea......in fact, the AFL and Virgin have an incredible relationship, and the two entities have vowed to work thru this together.....

Virgin haven’t made a profit for 9 years ( fact )
31% of Domestic travel in Australia is by non Australian citizens eg overseas travellers flying between major cities etc
There is no requirement for 2 domestic airlines in Australia for the next 12 months due no overseas travellers being banned etc
Impossible to trade themselves out of this mess with extremely high rental of terminals and aircraft
