The more pieces written and players interviewed about Dusty this week the more pathetic and frankly mean spirited Matthews' comments seem.

I freely admit to a blind spot when it comes to the Scats but putting Danger in the conversation is laughable. Great player, but I think Buddy, James Hird and Ablett Jr stand above him. Dusty stands alone, by virtue of his dominance in multiple grand finals and finals series. None of the others approach it.

To me Danger is in a group with Judd, Bont...a few others. Great players, but not at the top.

I thought the Danger V Dusty debate was decided years ago, and it was largely agreed that Dusty was clearly the better player.

Agreed.
Who gives a toss what Matthew’s thinks anyway. He played in a different era. Different rules, less umpires, less scrutiny.
He was a great player but a thug as well.
He’s never achieved the heights that Dusty has risen to. Brownlow, triple Norm Smith medallist (GF bog) triple Gary Ayres Medallist (best player, final series)
As far as I’m concerned, Dusty achieved more than Matthews. Dangerfield doesn’t even get to pour the the drinks let alone share a round.
The players you’ve mentioned eddy and I’d add Voss to the mix. Dangerflog can fetch the drinks, then sit on the floor.

I’d probably rate Selwood ahead of Danger tbh.

That's what he whinged about to Chimp.

IMO, the Front Bar was poor with Ooze last night....even bordering on racism. Bland show as it's always been.
The Albanian stuff? Even if it is conceded they pushed the boundaries a bit last night, to call it a bland show as always, well I assume you can stop watching it again now. Personally I get a great laugh out of it with some great guests..and great footage of the old days poking fun at their guests - and the guests know exactly what they are in for

Yeah that, along with Sam Pang saying Duz will go to the GC in a non-humorous way making Ooze look a bit bothered. Only the guests make it worth watching but the humour is amateur stuff especially Sam Pang with that stupid drip tray rubbish. I only find Mick funny.

Mathews said in 2017 dusty season is the best season by a player ever the old prick has dementia I wouldn't worry lol. Not to mention he doesn't want anyone threatening his own legacy as the best player ever.

Completely agree re: Dusty achieving way more than Dangerfield. Different gravy.

But while Matthews is completely wrong in his ranking of Dusty

He was voted the player of the 20th century of the century for a reason:

- The dude won 8 x B&F's in mostly champion teams.
- 7 x goal kicking
- 4 flags
- 1 x coleman
- kicked 915 goals
- In 1977 he had 658 possessions (ave 27) and kicked 91 goals. Think about that.

He was no shrinking violet in GF's

- Would have won Norm in 78 if they had it with 28 possessions (most for his team) and most goals - 4.3.
- In 83 GF kicked 6.5 from 15 kicks.

Check his career our here: Can you believe went 13 straight years with over 20 possessions (in a low possession era) a match and 30 goals a year. Incredible.

9 of those years he kicked 50 goals.

We all have a limited memory. It's also why Hungry (in Leysy's mind) is the greatest Tiger footballer ever. But that is a discussion for another day.

I would rate a number of players before Clanger.
Watch the 2019 finals when we played against them. 3rd Q when we turned up the heat he went missing for the rest of the game.
He’s not a match winner.

It was the VFL with 12 teams & an amateur game when Hungry played.
I'll continue to bang the drum but it's not fair to compare eras. Many of the best players in the country weren't even playing against each other at that time.
Both players are the best Tigers of their eras.

Yeah I did think that comment was a bit shortsighted if referencing Matthews career.

When talking about GOAT, Matthews comes before Dusty for mine.

agree it dies without Mick, I don't mind pang generally but also agree they missed the mark a bit the other night

As I said, Matthew’s was a great player. There’s no denying that. But it was a different game. Different rules, Umpired differently, less umpires.etc. Great player, great record. But he was a brutal thug. And I mean a thug.
And look at the teams he played in.
He was voted the player of the last century. That doesn’t mean he was. It’s subjective. Over a century a lot changes.

But in my eyes, Dusty stands alone, this century. He’s won more finals, won more grand finals. Lethal was yesterdays man of another era.
Dusty is todays man, and there will be no other player that will come close I; comparison for the next 76 years.
So Leigh Matthew’s can go and get *smile*. Dusty has him covered by a mile. And anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong. WRONG!

Back then I thought about Matthews, along with just about every oppo supporter " geez I wish he played for us"

Just as now, just about every oppo supporter says exactly the same thing about Dusty.

What a privilege it's been, seeing such unbelievable players.

There is no doubt that Matthews was a truly great player, he deserves the accolades he gets.

But I find things like best player of the 20th century a bit ridiculous. There are many factors which make this ridiculous: lack of memory of players from a long time ago, the changes in the game, but, most of all, recency bias.

Haydn Bunton won 3 Brownlows, including a Brownlow in his first year - but he played too long ago for anyone to remember.

Gordon Coventry is still second on the all time goal kicking list, played in the 1920s and 1930s.

Bob Pratt kicked 150 back when there were a lot less games.

There are many more I could cite.

Too hard to compare.

It is like comparing Hart, Bartlett and Martin - different game in different eras. Hart could turn a game, as could Dusty, while Bartlett was a model of consistency over 400 games which is simply amazing.

Again, too hard to compare.
