Finals Week 2: the Keilor cafe games.

Just got home.

That, was one of the most incredible things I have ever seen (this statement's probably also going to look incredibly stupid - or it might not - once the emotion wears off, as I've travelled the world and seen some remarkable sights).

After jumping up and down in the final minute and at the siren, I found myself walking around in a haze as I navigated the 96,000-strong crowd out of the ground. Just on auto-pilot, in a state of complete and utter disbelief - catatonic, almost. Everywhere the ears pricked, the Carlton song was being sung boisterously by large mobs - inside and outside the ground.

I ended up a way away from where I was supposed to be, with nothing but the Pullman Hotel in the distance to guide me out of the dark MCG parkland and into the East Melbourne streets where the car was. It's amazing what the brain does when it's hit with unfamiliar levels of dopamine in a rush. I may as well have been floating.

I kept it all together in the final quarter when the game was tight. I had been resigned to losing a close one. I'd been vocal early but then as the screws tightened I more or less sat there reflecting on the season that was. Then the final couple of minutes rolled around. Something just took me over - perhaps the auto-pilot state hit in those late stages.

Loudest Carlton crowd I have ever witnessed. It was absolute mayhem on the siren. I was level one on the wing in the AFL members. Strangers hugging and high-fiving, beer seemingly drizzling out of the sky (had I died and gone to Heaven, where the rain IS beer?!) and the song just blasting out of the mouths of many.

Once in the car en route to the Eastern Fwy, car horns were beeping one after the other in triumph, scarves draped out windows, and supporters on the streets greeting one-another like they'd known each other for years.

It's been a long time since I've seen this side of footy. Last Friday night wasn't a patch on what tonight was. And the scary thing is, there are even greater highs footy can deliver.

I think I'll go and wander in a haze some more.

Nice one BB

I think blues need to peel the potatoes for a prelim.

Out; marchbank, fogarty, kemp, cunningham

In: mckay, martin, hollands, maybe SOS?

You dont stop Lions kicking 15 goals on the gabba,

And i reckon

Motlop curnow silvagni

Martin mackay owies

Could kick 16

That Walsh kid is probably good for 1-2? What a star!

Toorak’s one-paced midfield and flankers are as big a problem as their key forward issues are. And that’s saying something because Brunswick aren’t super quick or anything but they had a yard on Toorak last night regardless.

Walsh was outstanding last night. Burnt them alive.

Look I think we'll get done like a dinner - but I thought the same last night. Which makes making the decision to spend considerable amounts of money on going even harder.

Just shows the fine line between success and failure.

The demons have thrown away a prelim final appearance twice in 2 weeks and the blues have won 2 games they should have lost. They are there and the demons aren’t.

I can’t see the bloos getting within 5 goals of the lions at the Gabba but who knows? It is a strange final series with arguably 3 of the 5 games so far lost by the team who had the better of the game.

Dunno what sort of game title it would earn on PRE (a la Keilor cafe etc etc) but I’d happily take a Brissy v GWS GF in a heart beat

Would be a low stress week that’s for sure

Do it BB.

It's only money.

And there's a reasonable chance it will be another decade till you're back in a prelim.

Soak it up

Agree on Walsh, monster game. You got to respect the players that take their game to another level under the heat of finals. It’s what made Martin a great of the game. Saved his absolute best for when it mattered most and did it multiple times.

I hope Snort Powder get hit by an Orange Tsunami tonight.
Agree with that Tman. I will barrack for any team that plays the dreaded Mudpies, though I know that is not the game today.
Almost hope for the Lions to win the big one. You know, jungle animals, a bit like the Tigers.

Beautiful writing, mate. What a perfect description of that euphoric state. In those moments I always think about how much money you'd make if you could bottle that feeling. Enjoy.

I agree.

It'd be nice if the AFL could confirm the day of the prelim so I could make my plans already. What a problem to have as a supporter!!

Will likely be Saturday night. Pies from what I'm told are playing Friday night V GWS or Port
Anyways, AFL will announce the schedule straight after tonight's game.

Haaarrrgh. The cook is gunna be mega pissed off this morning. She was bleating n moaning last weekend that there wasn't much in the Hun after Carlscum's first finals win in ages against Sydaknee. Grabbed the paper out of the driveway ( yes we're old n still get a real paper delivered ) and there is exactly 0, nada, big fat donuts not a *smile* thing in the paper about the Carlscum v Smelbourne game at all. :rotfl1 :rotfl2 :banana Ooooh she's gunna be looking for someone to poke with a pointy stick, old fart might need to make sure he's got good clearance or a head start before he starts laughin this morn.
Turbo your walker TM.

I just read something on Twitter now which puts a spanner in the works if GWS wins (pasted below).

What a load of balderdash
@AFL
If GWS beats Power they get a Sat Prelim Final The 7th team on the ladder gets preferable treatment over the team that finished on top of the ladder Collingwood as the highest Qualifying Final winner deserves a Friday night PF.
