Expect Richmond v Carlton to be postponed or the fans locked out

My view is....

-VFL games to be cancelled for how long it takes to try and get through the worst part of this, which could be right upto July. My reasoning is that once we start hitting winter things could get even worse if they havent by that time. Clubs could use their feeder clubs from each state to assist with the burden if required.

-If the AFL start imposing or thinking clubs can cram 3 games in a week or week and a half well watch the soft injury tolls. Just stupidity to place more undue pressure on the players and clubs.

-t will only take 1 player, official, staff , whatever to put a team and competition into jeopardy. What happens then? Do teams who play that side get the 2 or 4 points? How will that work out?

-I know that the AFL have paid for the rights for the games and the tv stations will want the season to go ahead. This is crucial in one aspect as ALL CLUBS will suffer huge loses this year. This could seriously put some more clubs who were fighting back financially to ask for substancial handouts from the AFL. This will occur. The AFL have funds put aside but this is something that no one could have foreseen. Brendan Gale spoke about just the first round suffering a $1 million dollar loss(thats just one round).!

-I think it would be a great idea to keep fans engaged if the AFL allowed say (499-500) people spread over the entire ground, even if it were mostly the cheer squads(who are the life blood or the club), maybe do something like members get picked randomly and give them a chance to attend. Maybe alternate each game so different members get a chance???

- How will they manage flights? Will the AFL/STATE/GOVT impose no interstate flights? Would they charter flights interstate? Who pays? Clubs or the AFL? iF there are no flights how will the points be allocated? 2 points each? No points ? May advantage interstate sides more????

- Do they put huge nets around grounds to retrieve the footballs? How will this be done? Cant be expecting officials or players to retrieve the footballs. Sides may take advantage if its a close game and just kick the ball as far as they can out of bounds and what happens to the time? You can see sides taking advantage of this. How will this be judged.? Deliberate OOB?

-Wages. How will clubs and the ALFPA, AFL handle this. Asking clubs to lay off staff etc will be hard to do. All across the country there will be staff cuts etc so this will have to be handled with care. The AFL shouldnt be asking clubs to do this. They should be assisting. Cant see players taking pay cuts. Players may have mortgages to pay, family/kids to take care of(even though schools may be closed down the track), this will place undue pressure on families to stay home (as we all may need to do) to take care of our kids. I can see Dangerdive not agreeing to taking a pay cut. I feel this may be the only way to assist clubs and players can play a small part( the ones that can ) to even save some of their clubs. I know it will be a tough decision to make. Clubs can look at contracts for this year and then over the next few years players can hopefully re coupe some of the loses they will incur this year. This may be felt for years to come.

-Advertising. Clubs will be relying on this. Will sponsors honour that if their product isnt shown? Will the broadcasters when teams are playing focus on endeavoring to support those clubs playing by just having their sponsors on while the station has their commercial breaks after a goal or at the ground?

-How will this year be assessed? Will we make it through the year? If we get to the end, play finals, whoever wins the premiership, will a * be placed against that club? We have gone through wars & depression and clubs still played, or teams fielded sides that could and that years GF is still noted in the record books!

-By the time we wake up today we may see an even more changing landscape to many things not just football/sport.

These are just some of the points as some may think you are stupid, over dramatizing , over thinking too much waiting, but just some stuff to have us discuss further.

Waiting

It doesnt make sense that a whole game or team needs cancelling if one player is positive.

It is just bad planning by the team. If the team is broken into groups, only that group needs to isolate.

What about the fans, the staff and other players symptoms don't come up right away. The afl is being big headed as usual.Major sporting codes world wide have stopped .Who's going to compensate the poor clubs. The AFL players accoiation will block it.

Wonder if they have thought of delaying start of season for 6 weeks then playing 17 rounds (each team once). A further 2 weeks could be gained by dropping byes.
We could still then have a proper legitimate season and finals (presuming danger passes).
Give players 3 weeks off unpaid (means tested) then return for a mini 3 week pre-season to get ready for round 1 in May sometime

Can someone clarify, is there still a possibility that Thursday night's game will be canned/postponed?

zero chance in my view. the cynic in me reckons the enormous pull of TV money is the only reason why it hasn't been postponed to begin with. imagine the ratings?

Postpone seems better than empty stadium especially for 2 large supporter based teams. But postpone until when? There's too much uncertainty on if and when this virus will hit, peak, come and go, not come at all......

I've done the maths and if you postpone now and start in mid May, there is enough time for a 17 round season and hold the GF on October 10. I reckon if everything was locked down now, we might meet the May deadline.

My tuppence worth.

Our three kids have headed off to school today (three different schools). Two of them travel to school on public transport. My wife has gone to work in a large, air conditioned building. On my way home from the school run, sparkies were working in close proximity while wiring up a new aged care building near us.

For the moment, the footy field is just another workplace. When someone at school or work tests positive for the virus, that is the time to take the nuclear option of closing things down. From the sounds of things, the clubs have been very proactive at keeping their players and staff isolated. Talk of cancelling the round or the season is over the top at this stage. The financial ramification are dire.

If it were me, the starting point would be to plan for a 17 round season -- one game against all other teams -- in order for the season to maintain some sort of legitimacy. Play games when possible and use the 7 "vacant" weeks (the 5 fewer games plus the mid-season and pre-finals byes) as catch up dates, much like premier league cricket and soccer do.

The two-week isolation period needn't be thought of as a terminal issue for the competition. The flu can be super nasty but it's treated much the same way -- keep affected people away from clubs until they get better.

I'd like to see the AFL commit to the first month of footy and provide clubs with the ability to top-up lists when and if necessary. Perhaps clubs need to test players a day before a match and give an undertaking their playing group is bug-free.

Either that or put a pause on the start of the season, with a view to a 17-round competition, until the hysteria subsides and normality resumes.

Good to hear. Best do it against the Chokers the week after, even though we're away. Otherwise we have to wait until R4 - April 11 against the Cows.
Jeez haven't they been through enough at the hands of RFC. That would be like starting their PTSD all over again.

trouble is this thing will peak in May / June so if they don’t start now then I can see the whole season being canceled.

Agree - chances are this thing will get worse before it gets better and it's impossible to plan ahead on the basis that a 17 week season would conveniently just present itself.

well then cancel the season then. Just my view and many people won't agree with it, but if people can't go to the game then there should be no footy. there is no footy without the fans.

Don’t need the season cancelled when we are in our prime - however they do it I hope we get a crack at another flag this year. Although clearly the health of the population is no. 1 priority.

If the season was able to continue I'd rather watch games on TV than have nothing.
But as soon as the season itself is compromised e.g. with players unavailable and clubs struggling to field teams - than yeah just scrap the season.

thats a certainty to happen. once players start contracting COVID19 it won't be an even playing field.

I love footy more than just about anything but I have zero sense of excitement whatever they do now.
Actually feel pretty sad about it all.

Personal opinion? I don't think they should play.
I hope common sense prevails & they postpone the game this week.
Same here. Everyone's feeling flat with just 3 days to go. I heard it from a lot of callers and the host of SEN overnight (Saints supporter good to listen to) who sounded really pissed off.

Our game is ridiculous with an empty crowd.

I'd take the risk and let the crowds in. There's enough chance all 44 players could pick up tackling and sweating on each other. Just have more emergency staff around.

One thing that hasn't been touched on much (although we're all feeling it) is the social impact of a cancelled, delayed or interrupted season.

What would it do to our social fabric, which relies so heavily on the colours you wear, the passion the game induces and the conversation that it generates?

I continue to support every effort being made to get the season up and running. While I think a 17-round season is logical (as best it can be planned), any footy being played in tough times like these is a tonic for the community.

We cope fine in Summer. Not sure no footy is going cause a major impact to society. We've got way bigger things to deal with.

But isn't that the point? While we're dealing with those way bigger things, I reckon any sort of distraction is welcome.
