Essendon = Entitlement

How do these psychos sleep at night? How do they keep getting high paying gigs?

He was forced out by poor management and governance and irregularities including money laundering and fees for no service exposed by a royal commission. He resisted for a while, and tried to get his his $2 mill bonus, not his pay, he got that, his bonus. An unprecedented shareholder revolt stopped it thank goodness.

He has a hide like a rhino. The crazy right wing christianity is not surprising.

But why did Essendon, or anyone, hire him to do a REVIEW? Call me crazy, but I would have thought someone you would hire to do a review would be a proven performer with rock solid ethics and bona fides? Mates at the club or the AFL I suppose, as usual. But again, how is the hide of the bloke? I've been sacked and disgraced so I suppose I'll go into the review caper, gotta be a few mates around who can throw me some gigs.

Then he sees an opportunity and applies for the CEO job, while doing the review, like a rat up a drainpipe, and the club goes for it!

You can't make this up, but at the same time it is perfectly predictable.

This is the AFL people. Corrupt incompetent privileged psycho out-of-touch boys club.

After the appointment of the CEO, I distanced myself from my former position regarding the supplements issue.

And that was just when I thought he was a banker.

Now I know he is also a *smile* the drug cheating maggots should have been thrown out of the competition.
Hallelujah and amen!
I prayed for your salvation and you have seen the light about the druggie scumbags
welcome aboard brother Richo

I dunno. .. where's all this HATE you're pointing out? Sure, people are questioning some of his personal choices but I can't see a lot of hatred. Plenty of taking the *smile* outta Essendon which is what we're supposed to do on here.
God knows (whomever he or she maybe, if they do in fact exist) them Essendon bums enjoyed many, many years of mirth at our expense. ... karma baby!
I’m (mostly) with TW here - there is a fair amount of hatred and vitriol against religious people. It shows how normalised it is that you cannot see it; you may call it “fair commentary”. Just on this page, we have:

“Them churches that get you singing, arms raised, eyes closed, swaying side to side. .... as they slip around the back and lift your wallet.”

“they [Essendon] look they are tipping into full Trump fake news whackyland.”

The bloke advocates against women's bodily autonomy. Women aren't exactly a minority group mate
I think there’s a world of difference between his views on abortion and homosexuality. Having an abortion or not is a choice people make. You are entitled to try to persuade people not to make/support certain choices on moral/ethical/whatever grounds, whether that’s abortion, eating meat, investing in fossil fuels, etc etc. “Women’s bodily autonomy” is just one view among several. (Dusclaimer: I am anti-abortion, and female, with a science degree in a related area.)

Being homosexual is not a choice. You cannot argue against what people are. We’re on dangerous ground if we’re sacking people for holding certain views on moral issues, but we cannot accept denigrating people for just being who they are.

Didn’t anyone on the bombers so called board read or know about the royal commission findings .. n what they said about him…. Forget his views it’s his actions that should be called into account…

More importantly what does Sheedy reckon about this state of affairs, did he support his appointment?

I've just read Thorburn's statement on LinkedIn. Bloke's off with the fairies.

Says 'media and leaders in our community ... made it clear that my Christian faith and my association with a church are unacceptable in our culture if you wish to hold a position of leadership in society'.

Talk about twisting the narrative to suit yourself.

The prime minister of Australia is a devout Catholic. Faith and an association with a church are not the issues.

Subscribing to a bigot's version of Christianity is what marks you as a wholly loathsome character.

And how about the sanctimonious victim playing?

Entirely on point for an Essendon administrator to entirely misread the room.

Stupid club.
Spot on. Good post 8 Ball. Clearly, in his mind, the problem lies with community leaders and the media, not him or his church.

Casting a fair eye to our own backyard, and applying the same morals and principals, Peggy O’Neal was also implicated in the Royal Commission for similar transgressions.

Thoughts ?

Yes, Classic straw-man manoeuvre, and a very obvious clunky effort even by those standards.

I'd have to know more, If Peggy was involved in fee for no service or money laundering, I'd be pissed off.

Joe Aston goes whackety-whack in the AFR and doesn't miss!

Select quotes:

The appointment of former National Australia Bank boss Andrew Thorburn as the CEO of Essendon Football Club landed like a *smile* in the punch bowl.

On Monday, Essendon president David Barham boasted that, “to my knowledge, no other AFL club has ever secured the services of an ASX-listed top 10 company CEO to run its club”.

Barham omitted a key adjective here. Thorburn is a *disgraced* former ASX 10 company CEO. No other AFL club has ever secured the services of a disgraced former ASX 10 company CEO for the very good reason that no other AFL club has ever sought to.

Thorburn even interviewed other (unsuspecting) candidates for the role – memorising the best parts of their pitches, no doubt! – before declaring himself a candidate. How is that ethical?!

Barham is quite clearly out of his depth. His first press conference as president – defending the sacking of coach Ben Rutten – goes down as one of the worst in AFL history.

But Essendon is a weird club full of deeply weird people. Thorburn would’ve fit right in.
