Dylan Grimes JDM

Thought Grimes got caught out not flying with his man several times.

Not sure why, killing the marking contest was his strength two seasons ago.

I reckon he got a message or a talking to about that, TM. Or it could have been rising confidence. But late in the game he let rip with a brilliant suicidal spoil after showing a bit of improvement in an earlier contest.

He's running into form at the moment.

You are right of course, the positives far outweigh the negatives.
Grimes and Batch being more reliable and consistent is a huge part of why we can afford to blood some and carry others.

I have one issue with Grimes.

In a poor team, you just want to neutralise a contest, because more often than not your team is losing the contest.

In a good team, more often than not your team is winning the contest. Neutralising a contest can therefore be a less effective option in a good team.

Dylan is still adhering to instructions that worked for the team 3-4 years ago. Moving forward, he needs to take the mark and move the ball forward (like Rance). He also needs to stop finding the boundary line under low pressure and only find it under medium-high pressure. Needs to make the most of his opportunities rather than causing a 'neutral contest' and seeing it as a 'clear win'.

He's playing to instructions I would have thought

Yeah, hopefully they've been updated recently and the coaches reinforce him marking the ball in their reviews. He seems capable of being a decent mark and play-on type of player. Marks tall and runs small with good pace.

His ball handling has been a lot more assured in the past couple of games than it was early in the season.

Makes a big difference when players don't fumble

Was very composed down back. Showed good leadership. Feeling very confident with him down back.

Best game he's ever played.

Also has perfected the Joel Selwood arm hook free technique. Sneaky bugger.
