Dustin Martin

Mick Thomas’s bar? Dusty must be a Weddos fan.
Not sure about Dusty but I believe that Clanger is an old mate of WPA.

Off topic, but Weddos are/were one of this country's greatest bands. Lucky enough to have seen them many times.

Star Tiger in career-best shape, forward's recovery on track

Dustin Martin is smashing personal bests in the gym in an ominous sign ahead of the 2024 season

By AAP
20 December 2023

RICHMOND star Dustin Martin is setting personal records in the gym and inspiring his Tigers teammates in his 15th pre-season.

The triple Norm Smith medallist is determined to prove to new Richmond coach Adem Yze he remains one of the League's elite players.

Yze is just the second full-time coach Martin has had after being led by Damien Hardwick in his debut season in 2010 until the middle of this year.

Martin, who is entering the final year of his seven-season contract, suffered a heavy knock during Richmond's training camp in Gippsland but was later cleared of concussion.

Tigers defender Jayden Short insisted Martin had returned from the off-season break in "unbelievable" shape in an ominous sign for the rest of the competition.

"When you get a new coach, everyone's got to impress again," Short said at Punt Rd on Tuesday.

"It's been good for our young boys, they get to impress a new coach and certainly us older boys as well.

"The way Dustin showed up was amazing.

"He's coming into his 15th year of AFL and he's setting PBs (personal records) in the gym and his running's certainly always improving as well.

"He's a great role model for everyone at this football club and I'm just lucky that I get to play alongside him and get to watch him go about his business every day.

"It makes us all want to get better when you see one of the best players in the competition always trying to get better.

"It's hard not to want to better yourself, he's an awesome footballer, but an even better person so we're very lucky."

What’s Dusty’s motivation this year? Cotch gone. Jack gone. The old gang has been broken up.

When it gets a bit hard, which it inevitably will this year, what keeps him invested? He’s done everything and achieved everything. He’s had strong intrinsic motivation driving him throughout the years, but will this year see the well run dry?

I hope not, but I can see it happening.

Really? You’re doubting his drive to succeed again?
His motivation is undoubtedly to win another flag in the coming years. Hates losing loves winning! He will give the team his all, no doubt

There are those who are saying Dusty is not the player he was and I suspect that is motivation in itself for him.

Personally I wouldn't be surprised if we see Dusty playing far more midfield than we have seen in recent years. I have felt for a while that perhaps Dimma put him out to pasture too early. Some of his work in the guts in the 2nd half of the year was not far off vintage Dusty.

I tend to agree. I reckon some of the so called experts, many of them pretty average ex players, plenty of them interns churning out clickbait articles, basically compare Dustin's finals & flag winning exploits against virtually every other match he plays.

Consequently, if he's not BOG then he's not interested, or he's heading for GC or the cliff!
We all know he brings so much more to our club in everything he does and probably heaps of other stuff we'll never even hear about.

Imagine a world in which Dustin leads us back to another flag, and compare that with a smash and grab at Gold Coast, where if they were to be successful, it'll only ever be viewed by the greater AFL public and us, as a gifted premiership ($250mill + and counting).... not one built on the financial support of generations of passionate supporters and members.

I hope he stays.................. forever!

'Breaking records in the gym'.

That's interesting considering we've been told he's been kept out of the gym for a decade due to the fear of over bulking.
Yes, it depends on what he is doing there of course

I always thought with Dusty that whilst everyone talked about his power and strength he also had a good turn of pace in the first 5-10 metres or so that was underrated. That’s usually the first thing that goes when a midfield player gets older so being a bit leaner may help him.

He looks pretty lean to me!

Can build strength without adding mass I believe. It's something I've been told basketballers do, so it doesn't impact their ability to jump.

I told you guys before that watching Martin at the Brownlow his body and ears seemed to pick up a the comment about two time winners. I said then he wants another one. That will be his motivation
