I saw Bones keep Huddo goaless in a proper match - now that was something
But you’re right - Hudson was magnificent
My Dad saw Mopsy Fraser hold Coleman to nothing for a half. They moved Coleman away from Mopsy, got two of their thugs to smash Fraser between them, then moved Coleman back when Mopsy was physically unable to stop him.

Who knows?

I am glad i was around for Dusty’s best and would love to see him retire a 350+ game Tiger.

I also saw Royce and he was a freak. If he played in a different era he may well have played 300 for us but his knee wrecked his career. At his peak he was awesome, marking everything and like a cat on the ground. KB was also an incredible player for us and to me the only Tiger in the conversation with Dusty as our greatest finals player. KB’s finals record is unbelievable.

Privileged to see them all.

Hudson was amazing. Couldn’t jump, not quick and pretty average overhead mark but kicked goal after goal. Awesome one on one, pushed that big bum out and had unbelievable anticipation and goal sense.
Would be interesting to see how he would have gone with 6/6/6 rather than having the whole forward line to himself though
As an aside I was at the game where Bones Richardson kept him goalless. Not sure if it was the only time or the first time but it was certainly one of very few times it happened

Peter Hudsons record is amazing.

In club football, played 288 games for 1721 goals at an average of 5.98.

When you add his representative football he kicked an incredible 2191 goals. Only 5 times held goalless.

If he played more than the 129 games for Hawthorn than he did, he would universally be regarded as the greatest forward to have played the game.

Grew up watching him play for Glenorchy in the TFL post his Hawthorn career. Amazing footballer - slow, couldn't jump but best reader of play I've ever seen, great body user, great mark and accurate kick using flat punts. Lucky to have seen it weekly as a teen.

A smart guy was Bones, played Hudson from behind that day. A shame that injuries crueled him, was equally as good forward or back.

one crazy crazy day at Waverly , Hart on fire at one end , Richardson has kept Hudson to 1 goal to the shadows of half time
a high ball comes in Peter Perfect lets Richardson fly unopposed for the mark and kidney punches him with all his might
Richardson is in bad way , stretchered off , didn't come back after half time
Geoff strang gets the job on Hudson who kicks 9 and Hart kicks 8 , we win a tight one
Richmond fans screamed at the goal umpire to report Hudson , of course it didn't happen

a Church near Glenferrie rail station had a board out the front which read
"If Jesus played for the Hawks what would the coach do ?
move Hudson to CHF " < or something like that >

I wonder how the likes of Dunstall, Lockett, Hudson etc. would go in an era of zone defence?
No doubt they'd still have kicked a lot of goals but the game is almost unrecognisable now from those times.

Another simple pleasure taken away by the corporate, money grabbing grubs at AFL headquarters.
And even worse, no more peanuts
And we aren’t allowed to throw shredded paper and streamers onto the ground
Or play kick to kick on the oval after the game !

I was there the day Dunstall kicked 17 against us. Most of me didn’t want him to break Fanning’s record, but there was a small part of me that did want him to do it, so I could be there and see history. Extraordinarily accurate kick.

I loved Derm as a player but Carey was better.

The Free incident happened right in front of me. Freezer ran at Derm out of his blindside with murder on his mind and Derm saw him just in time to raise his elbow and cave in Freezer's face.

Dermie's worst act against us was using the 'within 5 metres' rule to run through an unsuspecting and unprotected Des Ryan at a stoppage. One of the worst dog acts you've ever seen, worse even than Dog Stewart's on Dion.
Yeh, Derm made a habit of crashing through stoppages, boundary throw-ins towards his later career and taking out anyone from the opposition. Great player given he wasn't the athlete many others were. Super smart player who didn't shirk the moment. That's what all the greats have in common, an ability to sieze the moment. I haven't seen any better than dusty in that regard.

Reckon you're underestimating Derm the athlete. He was small for a CHF even in his time at only 186cm but the young Derm was a beautiful mover. His body paid the price for his hard man approach and he was pretty much finished by 27/28.

The exact message was “What would you do if Christ came to Hawthorn?”
