cant agree. If we lost Lids (which was a Positive IMO) and Dusty in consecutive years, tens of thousands of kids, and middle-aged men, would be seriously disillusioned.

Lets nip this debate in the bud.

Dusty is a once a generation player. He stays.

If he goes, I'll stab myself in the heart with a chopstick out the front of PRO. I'll use the thick end, so it only sort of bruises the rib.

Soft :)

He is our best player and he will walk .

Its all about what we get for him, and it is going to be a long season of speculation no doubt.

My money is on the hawks. Hodge will retire and he will top off their midfield perfectly.

It will be a 1 year rebuild for the hawks, record fast rebuild. Shows what real club can accomplish when the board is run by professionals.

Good luck to them.

He won't go if the club improves and the style of footy is drastically better. The bloke is very bankable, his attitude his work ethic and his loyalty. It's really crazy the public image if him, it's polar opposites to those that know him. He has a very strict routine and the club have been amazing in helping him off the field. Another year like last and you would have to ask why he would stay not why he would go.

Line in the sand Tigers , if Martin wants to consider hos options at the end of the year and not sign soon , tell him to *smile* off and we will take compensation for him.
sick of the club cowering to him and his *smile* wit manager .
you either want to stay or go .....

Same here, I've had a gutful gutful.

So we easily find $3.5 Million over 5 years for our midget thats missed so many games over last 2 years. when it comes to our own Dusty low ball him or let him walk.

how about we all spend the year grinding our axes on the Dusty thread?

long year of speculation indeed. A prophesy of a rapid hypothetical hawthorn rebuild is a cracking start.

I want Martin to stay, but we need to play this smart.

It is unfortunate, but football is a business where more and more players dont value loyalty as much as their pay packet and success.

If the club believes he is going then we need to look at threatening to match any offer made to drive his price up to increase the free agency compensation and/or trade value.

Need to also consider how this could affect us signing other free agents ie Fyfe or Zaharakis.

IF MARTIN is gone, the best possible scenario would be for us to come to a trade agreement for him which would probably be an early 1st and a 2nd round pick, maybe even more being 2 x 1st rounders and for us to sign a Fyfe.

That way we lose Martin, and get Fyfe and at least a 1st and 2nd round pick as well to add to our 2 x 1st rounders we already have.

The key would be to trade Martin so no free agency compensation draft picks would be lost signing a free agent ourselves. So we get Fyfe for nothing.

Need to utilise these loopholes with free agency before the rules inevitably change in the near future.

My dream result would be for us to keep Martin and for us to sign Fyfe for free. Let Freo get their respective compo picks and leave it at that.

We dont seem to get any favours so need to be as ruthless off the field as well as on.

If Prestia is worth 800k a year then dusty is worth $1.5 m .

Prestia isn't good enough to carry dusties boots

Why worry too much about stuff you can't control? as a supporter I mean. Everyone pre-empting outcomes and taking hard lines on hypothetical future scenarios. Whether he goes or stays will depend on a heap of interrelated factors. My money is on stay, he loves us and we love him right now, but who knows what will happen in the future? Whooda thought Mitchell would be an Eagle? Lewis a Demon? Dogs the premiers? etc etc. If he left I wouldn't be shocked or anything.

Not criticizing the speculation and angst, its PRE we'll talk about anything tiges until the cows come home, but personally I'm not going to let it worry me or colour my opinion of Dusty. At least not until round 15-ish, either way.

This is normal now, so the talk of media circus all year is overblown. Would have been 5 years ago sure.

I'm pretty relaxed about the whole thing.

Naturally I'd prefer Dusty ends up a one club player, wins a Brownlow, and gets to play in a few winning finals.

But if he chooses to go, well all the best young fella. Now let's make sure we're well compensated.

Said it before n I'll say it again. I support the Richmond Football Club, not the Dusty club or the Tross club or the Lids or Cotchy club.

Every club is and has been for a long time a professional sporting business, I don't have an issue with either the club or players trying to maximise their contract / career position.
Love watching and supporting all our players Royce, K.B. Balmey, Richo, Knighter, Dusty, Cotch n all the other good ordinary n sometimes not so good players that come to the club n try their best for us.
If we keep Dusty in Tiger colours, I'll be happy. If he decides it's time to go, then thanks for the memories, it was fun watching you play.

It's all about following the Tigers for me, the players come n go but the club remains.

Here here. And about Prestia being crap, it not what the players think of him! Quite a few players are excited about having him around!

I think we're in a no lose situation here.

"Say what," you ask?

I say yes, no lose situation. You heard right.

If we retain Dusty, we’ve kept a quality player in the prime of his career. We’re meant to do this.
If we lose Dusty, well in honesty, it’s probably because we’re no good.

And if we lose him because we’re no good, then we’ll need the draft picks to rebuild after Hardwick. It will force the club to rebuild.
It’ll hurt through the gate and in the merchandise areas, but we get 4 picks inside 20 for example, it’s like déjà vu from the Deledio\tambling era.

However, this time we’ll have decent players to build upon, not a football wasteland. We’ll be able to take some quality key players and maybe a gun midfielder.
That would do us OK in the long term.

The only issue I have with that is that they will probably extend hardwicks tenure if we are *smile* , as we can't sack him at the start of the rebuild

This is the contract to set Dusty up for the rest of his life. Of course he's going to weigh up his options, who wouldn't in his situation? What's he got to fall back on when his career is finished?

Holding off to the end of the season is the right call, and any player manager worth his or her salt would do the same in Dusty's situation. It just means that Dusty won't be hounded by the press at every moment during the year, and if he is, he'll pound out the standard "I love playing for the Tiges, and I just want to concentrate on getting the club back into the finals this year". Meanwhile, negotiations will go on behind the scenes.

I think he'll sign a very large 5 year deal with the Tiges, and be a one club player.

Dusty is already set for life with the coin he has already taken out of the club. This is about screwing every last cent he can out of some poor club
