Dustin Martin

Feel the same ol' mate.

Cannot blame Dusty one bit. The season has a very real chance of going pear shaped and we've got too far hitched with Dimma for a new coach to easily transition with the same group.

A year ago would have been fine but now it will be a rebuild of sorts, thus no way should he be advised to sign on now.

There is no more loyal people than the PRE crew and hell a lot of us can't stand The Peggy Sue, Benny Fail and *smile* show. Why would players like Martin who have a choice be any different.

Martin leaving will be Dimwits lasting legacy for us all to enjoy

If this was Trent Cotchin or Jack Riewoldt we'd be saying it's measured and intelligent path. But with Dusty & Ralph we are quick to jump in and claim disloyalty.

If Dusty cares about winning flags, he has to wait. By publicly saying it's off, it doesn't stop the club and Ralph talking behind closed doors and getting the deal done. It can take the heat out of things. The club has to woo Dusty, show him the vision and the path to success. It's actually harder to tell a story to someone who is already involved in the club, you can't just sell the sizzle, Dusty needs to see the sausage. And if he does walk away, I won't blame him. It would be understandable.

It's Dusty alright and he wants to wait until after the season all depending on how we go. More pressure on Dimma.

I hope its more about pressure on Dimma than him threatening to leave if our 2017 is as bad as expected. but its probably both. but hey, at least we'll have at least 3 first round draft picks this year. ;D

galling if it becomes a success issue. only one guy you can blame for that - Hardwick.

the club's decision to extend HIS contract will have long-lasting damage.

:veryupset :veryupset :veryupset

If we have another disastrous year we probably need to hit the draft hard anyway. Could be win-win if he walks.

this is true unfortunately. we're not gonna win a flag within the next 5+ years with GWS on the verge of dominating, so we may as well start over again with a new coach and a sh!tload of 1st round draft picks.

Same with Lids.

Ha - Great analogy.

Posting lads, I think Dusty has already shown impressive loyalty despite the stifling framework the players are asked to work in.

Is he going? Chicken Little time.

Can't see Hardwick lasting long unless he radically changes the game style. New coach, new direction, renewed hope and enthusiasm can go a long way.

Let's test this. How many finals has he won off his own boot?

2013 http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_match_statistics?mid=5751
2014 http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_match_statistics?mid=5958
2015 http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_match_statistics?mid=6166

Not on his pat malone but not exactly outstanding in any final either. Compare his performances to Bontempelli for example.

I think Dusty is a very good player and arguably the best player in our team. However as I have argued where does he really stand in terms of overall AFL talent?
That's the true question we should be asking as to his worth.

It's hard to soar like an eagle when you are surrounded by turkeys. Especially when the coach is the king turkey.

I dont mind the idea of Dusty playing to build his value, rather than playing on the first of a huge five year deal.

I dont think you could really pay overs for dusty. A once a generation, unique, player.

as if we'd let him go. Let 15 clubs salivate and speculate for the year.

The sky still looks pretty far up to me.

So we pack up and not try for the next 5 years??

We would need to change the Richmond song and remove the "Fight and fight to win" line.

Bugger all. You don't let a best 22 player in the league walk or leave.

What ever you get back will be pennies on the dollar. And the return won't be seen for five years.

For all those talking two top 10 picks remember Dusty is a restricted Free Agent, making it hard to match an offer for a guy that doesnt want to play for us.

It it goes to a trade our return was be diluted ala Dangerfield.

Great point Leysey ol son didn't think of that.

That being the case it is what it is.

A good year from Dusty and a *smile* year for the RFC might be only way a good return may be gotten for him as a free agent if he does indeed decide to go to a better outfit.

Im still not gonna *smile* my pants worrying about it though what will be will be I couldn't blame him from moving on either if it all goes tits up.

Dusty attentions aside the season is one serious injury to Rance and or Jack from disaster.

If success is going to be part of the package that will convince him to stay the we had better hope that leopards can change their spots because Hardwick's coaching and game style need a total 180 degree turn.

If he stays great but like some have already said let the other dozen or so clubs fight for his services and pay us overs in terms of a trade.......2 first rounders(1 top 3 pick)nothing less. then we raid this years draft for 2-3 key talls and a mid.

Two type of Richmond players. Ones that wants to play for the club, one that chases the $$$ - and has every right to do so. Fans will always love loyalty.... sad reality with such BIG on offer these days its a personal business call. Not about club loyalty (there are a few but not many).

By all means let some other team find $1.1M in the CAP for him in return for a A list player PLUS a first round draft pick.

Just as the players adjust to the modern reality of football business so are we the fans.

did I say that? all I am saying is that now will never be a better time for a total cleanout and rebuild. we already have 2 first rounders this year. if dusty goes (and I hope he doesn't btw), we'll get 2 more. plus a new coach (and hopefully board) in 2018. it'll take at least 5 years to build a flag winning team anyway...

Handbrake will use the dusty distraction to milk another two years

This is the contract to set Dusty up for the rest of his life. Of course he's going to weigh up his options, who wouldn't in his situation? What's he got to fall back on when his career is finished?

Holding off to the end of the season is the right call, and any player manager worth his or her salt would do the same in Dusty's situation. It just means that Dusty won't be hounded by the press at every moment during the year, and if he is, he'll pound out the standard "I love playing for the Tiges, and I just want to concentrate on getting the club back into the finals this year". Meanwhile, negotiations will go on behind the scenes.

I think he'll sign a very large 5 year deal with the Tiges, and be a one club player.
