Agreed. Table our final offer with a decision to be made by the end of R23. Take it or leave it. Totally irresponsible for us to match the highest bidder. If the money talks the loudest he can walk. We get salary relief to splash on others. Lobby the AFL hard to get decent compo and have a minimum 3 first round picks in the draft.

Excerpt.
There is a “formula” that decides free agency compensation — and only the suits at AFL House know it. In the guidelines on free agency, compensation is said to be based on:

NEW contract of the free agent. The longer the contract and the more money paid to the free agent, the better the compensation. As player salaries continue to be kept secret, there is no transparency on the AFL formula.

And the AFL adds this interesting clause: “In applying the formula, an expert committee reviews the formula outcomes. The committee has the power to recommend alternative outcomes where the formula produces a materially anomalous result.”
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/afl/expert-opinion/michelangelo-rucci/how-the-afl-assigns-compensation-picks-for-free-agents-remains-a-frustrating-mystery/news-story/85d6ccc6444067b1dc0fd968f16220d5
So there is no formula and another faceless AFL appointed committee decide the outcome.

Should he win the Brownlow and then leave we require the first pick in the Draft. He would be deemed the best player in the AFL and a pick after our first rounder is manifestly inadequate.

Brodders I think Melbtank got like pick 3 / 4?

I'm sure it was something along those lines ???

Could be wrong.

Unless I've misread the rules, I thought if it eventuated the way I said above for Dusty that isn't an end of first round pick not a pick after ours? I don't think ( eg we finished 4th , as it stands we have pick 14 that we get pick 15. ?
Smelbourne got pick 3/4 for Frawdley because that's where they finished on the ladder, they got the pick straight after their usual draft pick.
Hawforn got pick 19 for Buddy because that was the pick straight after their usual pick after winning the flag.
If we get knocked out of finals early we would get a pick around 10 or 11 for Dusty, if we play a prelim it would push out to around 15 or 16.

Not a hope in hell the AFL will come up with some sort of magic formula that will give us a better compo deal if Dusty walks. Since Gazza n Mould Coast the whole R.F.A. compo system has been a farce, should be scrapped completely. Clubs have a salary cap n anyone who is not contracted, or wants to change clubs as their contract comes to an end should be able to do so, all this compo crap is just a pile of *smile*.

Agree, if club and player can't agree salary and others can pay when they are uncontracted they should be able to go wherever they want. The compensation is you free up salary cap.

Tell that to Hawthorn when they lost Franklin, inadequate compensation is all we will get.
