Do players who nominate for the draft (any draft) get to 'name their price'? I thought the club that picks them pays what they want or it's the highway.

Obviously that's not the case or the bottom team could just offer minimum wage for any gun who happens to end up in the draft. Here's a sample draft form link:

http://www.nabafldraftnom.com.au/images/AFL%20Draft%20Booklet%202015.pdf

If you are a category 1 player wanting to enter the draft, a club can only draft you if they agree to the remuneration terms stipulated by the player. So yes they do get to name their price.

Yep he's gone. Have to hope North don't finish bottom now or else we won't even get a compo pick.

Only hope now is that Dusty takes control and goes against what the Merkin and others close to him are advising, which is unlikely given he's never shown that attitude before.

If North are offering 500k a year more than us, that's a big price to pay for loyalty.

Dangerfield accepted a couple million less than he could have received if he opened himself to the highest bidder.

to live down the coast from Geelong. his decision was always a lifestyle/family decision, it was never about the $$.

any talk of Dusty entering the draft is silly, as is trade talk i reckon.
if we match any offer he will play for us. if we don't he either plays for us on lower $$$ or he walks as a free agent.
we cant pretend to match an offer then offer him less.
and we cant pretend to sign him them trade him elsewhere.

Dusty plays for us, or we get a pick after our 1st pick as compo.

Personally I think the most likely is he stays or we trade with the club who he wants to go to. As a restricted free agent, I can't see us not matching an offer and if that's clear to the other team they will be keen to trade.

But if we match any offer why would he leave?

Exactly Brodders.

But I wouldn't be matching a rediculous offer that could impact us further down the track.

There lies the issue/problem.

If the offer is rediculous and we don't match he goes to the highest bidder ( eg North ) and as a compo we get an end of first round pick unless the AFL do a Frawley but that's highly unlikely as we are not Melbtank.

we will get a pick after our 1st rd pick, not at the end of the 1st round. melbourne got a pick after their 1st pick.

Ch7 FrontBar did a skit on the Dusty Martin (that they have posted on the RFC page) with Sam Pang asking Benny for a Dusty update.

Maybe i am reading too much into this, but if he was not locked away (to Richmond) I would not see Benny Gale doing a skit like this!!!??

Spot on!

Anyone else watch it multiple times trying to read Benny's lips?

It was a funny skit though

I still think he will stay he does have a close bond with the boys.

They might be leaving the announcement for finals week to lift the joint if he is staying

Brodders I think Melbtank got like pick 3 / 4?

I'm sure it was something along those lines ???

Could be wrong.

Unless I've misread the rules, I thought if it eventuated the way I said above for Dusty that isn't an end of first round pick not a pick after ours? I don't think ( eg we finished 4th , as it stands we have pick 14 that we get pick 15. ?

Well the corrupt AFL changed the rules when Ablett left Geelong so they got two first round picks. It was supposed to be only one pick but they complained and the AFL buckled.

At a very minimum we should get a pick at the start of the draft. So pick one. Anything else is, as the AFL would say 'manifestly inadequate'.

Well nearly another week down.

It was quiet since word filtered out that he was going to sign, by respected journos. :rofl

Then all of a sudden a couple of tweets and it's now common knowledge that North have upped the $$$$ to knock us out of the ball park.

Carr sitting back with his client just waiting for the next ball park figure to be announced.

Personally anything over 1.2 or even that number we move on...

The Richmond way would be that he signs up for 7 years and has a crippling knee injury, remember one N.Brown.

Luckily it will be a board decision not one persons whim to resign him.

I feel we need a team first culture. The way this is playing out now I'm fine with him leaving if he wants to. In fact I would be more upset if the club were irresponsible enough to yield to the demands of such a long and expensive contract. As good as Dusty is you can't break the bank on one player.

Always thought if Dusty goes we should hit the draft, starting to think even if he stays we should hit the draft , time is getting closer for Jack , Cotch and Rance, however I think they've got a couple of good years left, I think we need to ad more young talent to the youngsters we allready have, personally don't think there's a lot of genuine A grade talent in the under 25s, so I'd be backing MC to ad 2 A graders with our first 2 picks this year. Not sure how we immediately fix our KPF problem

Agree.

If he leaves the AFL must be heavily lobbied to ensure we get a better pick than after our first rounder.

Havent they said previously they have a protocol/system in place for free agency that can be flexible to suit the situation?

Agreed. Table our final offer with a decision to be made by the end of R23. Take it or leave it. Totally irresponsible for us to match the highest bidder. If the money talks the loudest he can walk. We get salary relief to splash on others. Lobby the AFL hard to get decent compo and have a minimum 3 first round picks in the draft.

Excerpt.
There is a “formula” that decides free agency compensation — and only the suits at AFL House know it. In the guidelines on free agency, compensation is said to be based on:

NEW contract of the free agent. The longer the contract and the more money paid to the free agent, the better the compensation. As player salaries continue to be kept secret, there is no transparency on the AFL formula.

And the AFL adds this interesting clause: “In applying the formula, an expert committee reviews the formula outcomes. The committee has the power to recommend alternative outcomes where the formula produces a materially anomalous result.”

As good as Dusty is, we must not be held to ransom. We have made a offer, then we have upped the offer - that's it. No more. I would hate to lose him to North but if he's after the $$$$$s then let him go. Gee that hurts.
