Had a chat to very senior RFC source tonight. Things I learnt:

- we think his old man is the biggest problem. We think he is driving from NZ and pushing Dusty to negotiate the biggest deal at any cost

- we think Carr is a waste of space (nothing we didn't know). He has ni idea what he's doing. Asking dumb questions. We have strategised to play nice to him and not get him fired up like last time eg when Benny and Balmey come out saying we are working hard with Ralph to get the deal done (Carr was responsible for shopping Dusty around last time and there was no interest and he came out looking like a tool)

- we know we have the ability to match any offer but we won't be selling the farm to do so. If a club comes in with a ridiculous offer (1.5m), we will walk away. We are not interested in giving up a Shane Edwards (yes bad example but I didn't say anything) just to accommodate Dusty.

- apparently Dusty snuck out to NZ after the Lions game. It is our feeling that, following that, he now just wants to get it done. He has come back to the club full of love and enthusiasm since returning and evidenced by the way he interacted and celebrated with his teammates on the weekend. Let's hope that is the case but it was just a gut feel and we don't know either way.

Other snippets:

- the club is so excited with Shai (not so excited about him joining Ralph's stable). Balmey is talking him up big time. My source wouldn't be close to match committee but thought we might see Castagna getting a rest and Shai coming in. I asked about Rioli needing a rest and the view was he may have turned a corner last week as evidenced by some of his defensive efforts and tackling. Commented on what such a quality individual Rioli is which is pretty clear for all to see

- I raised Casboult and got the feeling we are not interested (or perhaps hasn't been discussed at my source's level yet). His kicking was commented on. I get the feeling we don't want to crowd Jack too much with a dominant contested mark. I suspect we would be happy to see how Jack and the mozzies play out before deciding what to do on that front.

All food for thought

I would have to say that i am particularly disappointed if a senior person at the Richmond football club is passing such commentary out to those who dont really need to know at this point. No doubt there are delicate negotiations going on behind closed doors, no doubt we wish to keep Martin.

To do so means irrespective of what we think about anyone playing a part with this we play a straight bat. That includes expressing personal opinions on Martins manager and father.

Pretty poor when you think about it.

Love to know your source so i could kick them from one end of punt road to the other.

Apologises for negativity but we need to be more professional than this stuff indicates we are.

Dude its an organisation of what 100+ employees? People talk. Not like they're state secrets. It's not the CIA.

On Dustys dad, I have heard the opposite in that he is huge on loyalty and he recognises how much the club has done for Dusty.

the highlighted bit is factually incorrect, Dusty himself admitted that at the B&F 3 or 4 years ago

That'd be RFC wouldn't it? Let a generational player like Dusty walk for $200-300K because they didn't want to lose a pedestrian player like Shank ::)

Reminds me of the Frawley years where we were extremely keen on Kane Johnson. At the end of 2001 a deal was on the table for Ben Holland but we baulked. We ended up having to trade the no. 2 draft pick to Adelaide a year later for Johnson and Holland went to Melbourne a year after that anyway ::)

Very hard to trust this club to make the right call when they overrate average footballers.

Thanks for all the insights anyway Bris.

he did say "source" may not have been an employee

In saying that , I'll be spewing if it was from an employee, been years since we have had a leak from the club

Tend to agree unfortunately

Thanks BT

Tim Watson seems pretty certain Dusty is heading to Sydney.

I dont think hes going anywhere, but youde have to match and play unprecedented hard ball with those Sydney *smile*.

Heeney and their first pick.

On old man Martin, it wouldnt be entirely original fatherhood to advise your 25 yo son to maximise his income.

Managed to keep Cotch, Rance and Jack, Ridley so they aren't that inept these days.

Maybe the sydney thing has legs....
Makes sense for dusty to defer talks.
Deal would involve sydney offloading tippet etc to make space.
Once this happens maybe they can than make a play.

Legs - you are joking - this is a rumour from old man Watson - he is last century's man, now irrelevant and when was the last time he was the source of news breaking story - NOT. All just fluff.

that's right you have to match the offer. otherwise you will be getting pick 16 ish as compo from the AFL. first rd pick after our pick. that sort of pick for dusty would be a disaster outcome for us.

unless its something like 1.8m you have to match it. $1.5 you say yeah sure we will match it, then you negotiate a trade with the other party.
we cant just walk away, as was mentioned, and accept pick 16 for Dusty!!! that's not acceptable!!!

That's an oxymoron in bold.

The original version was composed by Jack Malcolmson in 1962 and has "shin".

Well not really. I said the 'original' Fables version, wasn't implying it was the 'original' version, in fact I said that it was originally 'shin' but changed by the Fables version.

At the end of the day he's a RFA so we just need to match any offer if we want too. It's a tough call. If he ends up single handed LY winning a team a premiership we'll be looking back thinking an extra 300k a year would have been worth it. It's just 6 other blokes on 50k less a year.

That's right. We don't need to get into a bidding war. As long as we offer something that is not insulting, we can just buy our time. The only issue is if Martin decides to go to the draft instead but I can' t imagine why he would want to end up at a struggling club for the sake of a few more dollars.

Understand we shouldnt bother matching ridiculous offers but to lose him as RFA would set us back in the short term but thats the way of the world these days.

If he takes a 1.5 mill a year deal then we should get 2 x early 1st rounders as compensation.

That could leave us with 4 x 1st round picks to play with in dreamland.

I don't know how many smothers Martin has been credited with this year but his attempts are trending up. Dustin Martin is not only the best player in the comp (except for Alex Rance) he's still improving.

Border Security needs be told of this.
