Dustin Martin

If he hasn't signed soon after the new agreement then I'd be getting nervous.

Not many hang around after waiting until the end of the season.

If he goes I hope he goes to GWS or St Kilda.

They're the only ones with currency.

He's restricted FA anyway so we just match any alternative offer.
If we are prepared to pay it.
Must match it. He's the best player in the game we shouldn't let him go. If he still wants to go then 2 first Rd picks. or off to Brisbane. Let's see how Ralph and dusty will like it going up there.... they might quickly change their mind like last time!!
All I know is we gotta be tough on this one. We come out winners or off to bris u go!!!

Buckenara ...
Tigers are playing a really good brand of footy and I’m happy to see, for Damien Hardwick’s sake, it’s translating into wins. What WINS?
WTF is Buckenara on about? We lost to the Swans!
Goes on to say who we should target & how to deal with Dusty. He must be reading PRE

I don't get the FA stuff. Doesn't Dusty get any say in where he ends up?

He does.

There are two kinds of free agents- restricted and unrestricted. Unrestricted FAs can go out, find a deal that they like at any other club and announce they are going there. Their current club does not get a say in what they are going to do. These are players who are not in the top 25% of earners at their club (outside the top 10 basically) or players who have been free agents in past years i.e. they have come up as free agents, signed a new contract and that has now expired. These guys can go anywhere they want.

Restricted free agents are up for the first time. They are usually 8 year players and in the top 10 at their club. Dusty is clearly this.

These guys can entertain offers from any club and take them to their host club. That club has the option of matching it. If it is matched, then the player cannot go to the other club, but he gets the same salary he was offered. So far, no club has matched an offer and kept the free agent, so it is very likely that he will go to the club of choice.

However, the angst for the host club is the compensation. When Franklin walked to Sydney, Hawthorn didn’t bother matching and the compensation they were given was a pick in the draft after their first pick. They were premiers that year so it turned out to be pick 19. As well as this, they were then unable to pick up any other Free agents to replace him as this may have watered down the compensation.

When Dangerfield decided to go to Geelong, he was in the same position. A top 5 player in the comp and a restricted free agent. Adelaide didn’t match the offer but they signalled that they would. This forced Geelong to trade for him instead and the trade was much more than the compensation, so Adelaide felt fairly compensated and opted to not match the offer. Adelaide were then free to chase other free agents if they wanted to as there was no compensation to lose, although, from memory, I don’t think they did.

Last year, Vickery was a restricted free agent. Again Richmond threatened to match the offer, not necessarily because they wanted to keep him but because the contract he was offered was not high enough to give Richmond appropriate compensation, so they threatened to match. In all likelihood, the two teams worked something out together from that point.

So to answer your question. The rules are such that if matched he has to stay. So far, no-one has matched so he will most likely go. Richmond will be keen to match and get better compensation via a forced trade.

Or they will be the first to force a player to stay and pay him a huge contract.

Personally, I would match. He is worth every cent.

Good post Tottie and well explained.
There is also one other scenario. We match the other suitor club's contract. Dusty can accept our offer and re-sign with us, or refuse to sign with us and then a trade with the suitor club takes place. If there is no suitable trade done, he re-signs with us or he has to nominate for the draft. Then he has to go to whichever club selects him. (He can nominate contract terms).

One other point previously mentioned is free agency compensation is determined on net gain and net loss.
So even though we could get band 1 compensation (a pick directly after our 1st round pick) if we were to say pick up a Sam Reid for instance (Sydney get compensated, say a band 1 or 2) our compensation suffers accordingly.
We may end up with a band 2 or band 3 or nothing if both players are band 1 contracts.
So there's a fair bit to ponder, there's a fair bit at risk

Don't stress. If we lose Martin, we gain two first rounders. Might be better in the long run...might not.
But change is needed anyway. Out of this type of crisis, success can follow. I am not bothered one way or the other.
In fact, would rather not pay big bucks. Offer something reasonable and just go with what follows. Can't feel blackmailed.

General suggestion...may be less, may be more, once the trading is done.
What I mean is......we need to move forward to win a flag. Gulp..that is the aim, right?
Of Martin costs too much, then let it be and find other options in his place, Ai am assuming we would have either good compensation or residual cash or trade options available.
I want progress, not more of the same, if.......Martin is going to be a burden.
If not, great, continue as is.

Is he injured?

Holding off and playing injured could reduce the value of his contract.

Taking a gamble is Dusty. Right now he's at peak value. If we've offered something fair and we know the details of the EBA, he's taking a huge risk thinking nothing will happen to him in a brutal sport where injuries happen all the time. Has his manager advised him of this?

Little bit over dusty and his manager
Don't get me wrong, he's an awesome player, and we'll definitely be a much weaker team without him
But if he doesn't want to be at Richmond, so be it. Get what we can
If he wants to bend us over and take as much money as he can, limiting our chances of building a decent list, then *smile* off as well

Now Shai has the same manager, ffs.

Well said.

We we want and answer soon and he opts out, then what? Get game time into Grahame?? Play your best 22 for the season? Surely does not go to the vfl?

RFC & Dusty have plenty of time to sort this out. Gale needs to toughen up imo & not say a thing to the media. No need for answers now. After seasons end, much to many supporters, fans & RFC dugust and angst, only then I believe this circus will play its final act.

Dusty is the hottest property in the AFL world, why wouldn't he try to earn the most he can for his long term future. Good on him. Deserves it. My gut feeling is he will stay.

Gale can match any offer as Dusty is a restricted FA, so plan for that Gale (or close to it). Many expect it will be within the 1mill to 1.2mill a yr or increased increments around that over 5 yrs.

If we can a couple of 200cm players (players who do the job) at end of year, we should be right up there in premiership discussions next year.
Dusty would want to be part of that.

yeah, we used to have more holes than a slice of Jarlsberg.

now weve really just got one gaping hole, and a premiership age spread for the next 3-5 years.

Filling the hole shouldnt be that challenging, and Dusty will win the brownlow and stay

couple of things I don't understand:

1 how media people say Richmond will be negligent and shouldnt match a big rival offer. if say for eg Essendon offer 1.4m over 5 years is that not negligent on their behalf. only on ours if we match it?? how does that work??
if a club is offering a contract surely we should match it. we have cap space and it has just increased. he is prob the best player in the comp now, so why would you risk losing him, when you can match and keep him (I don't buy it that he would want to leave, he loves the club he would only leave for more money. make that a non issue and I think hes very happy to stay).

2. when players ala buddy GAJ were looking at the option of moving clubs, they tried very hard to keep everything hush hush. yet we see ralph openly going to meet other clubs. there is no hush hush about it. if dustys intention was to leave you would think he would want to keep it hidden from the club/other players as much as possible. this is going the other way, it seems they want everyone to know they are speaking to other clubs. I think this is due to scare tactics and that their intention to try and make RFC pay as much as possible for dusty. that's how I take it anyway.
