Deledio's Contract (Merged)

Always interesting to see things from an opposition supporter's perspective CHF.

Hello Rosy. How are things going? It has been a while since I posted But I am living in Europe now and I am a little out of touch with the day to day of football.

In this situaion I would want my club to make a hard play for the kid. Afterall it can only be up side for melbourne. it will not cost them anything if they fail. if they make a strong play and lose out then it maight just cost an opposition club a bit to match the offer we put out.

I am sure if the roles and positions were reversed Tiger supporters would want their club chasing hard.

Here is a senario for you.

Melbourne offer him a bundle that he is attracted to. Richmond decide they cannot/do not want to match it.

Deledio wants to go to Melbourne. In the trade week Melbourne offer Pick 18 and Rivers for him.

Do you accept or let him go to the PSD?

Melbourne supporter here and sometime poster to this forum.

Interested in this thread and in my opinion Richmond should do what they have to do to keep deledio at the club. However from my point of view I would like my club to all they could to get hold of him. I am not talking about offering picks 1&2 or even either of those for him. What I would expect the club to do throw a sizable figure at him and get him thinking. get him a bit unsettled.

He is out of contract and if we could drive a wedge between him and the club then we are in the position to make a trade offer on our terms or get him to nominate for the PSD.

I am presenting this from the perspective of an outsider looking in. might get a few of you looking outside the box.

$2m over three years with some incentive payments available in the last season of the the contract. never know, might get a nibble at that from him.

Something like this would at least stir the pot a little.
again if deledio were to leave it wont be over dollars he will be well remunerated at rfc or anywhere else he goes.
if deledio goes it will be to a club he is sure will play in a gf within the next 3 to 5 yrs. sorry chf i dont think he wpould even contemplate going to your club. although it may be possible that you do play in a gf in 5 yrs time.

to me deledio would look at a list like hawthorns still very young and with an obvious window over the next 5 yrs.

Yep... gotta agree with you on most of your points Claw. However, my point is that I would want my club to make a very public play for him. I do not see any downside in that.

I have to add that it is my expectation he will agree terms with richmond and stay.

1 problem, Lids will not want to go to Melbourne, no offence but if he goes it will be to someone on the verge of playing finals.

I'd trade him to a club that makes a decent offer - RIvers and 18?!?!? You are kidding yourself

god knows what he would be like at geelong.

He would be a top 10 player in the AFL at a good side. Put it another way, how good would Joel Selwood be if he had to play with the lemons at RFC? Nowhere near the player he is now.

Cannot trade to a club he does not want to go to. Your get to accept the offer or he goes to melbourne for nothing in the PSD.

It was the same situation that melbourne faced when Thompson wanted to return to Adelaide. We had an offer on the table that we either accepted or he was going into the PSD.

Re: Is anyone else concerned?

Firstly if Deledio comes out and says to us he wants to go to Melbourne and is willing to walk if need be, then I would tell him to close the door when he exits the building. Melbourne can keep Rivers and Pick 18.

This of course is pure fantasy as it will not eventuate. There is no way in the world Deledio will request to move to Melbourne.

So brings me to if he nominates let's say an interstate team like West Coast? What is fair compensation? Pure fantasy but a good topic of discussion.

They have pick 6 I think so they will need to up that considerably.

Pick 6, Mitch Brown, Pick 22 would be what I would want.

Gives us Pick 3, Pick 6, Pick 19, Pick 22 and a young big bodied talented Victorian kid.

What do others think?

No the choice is Lids signs with us or he goes where he doesn't want to ie. Melbourne.

Simple, get someone like Carlton to offer an extra brown paper bag (or environmental ambassadorship) to come to their club, and talk turkey with them.

If he's leaving, he's leaving for cash is Melbourne is an option, and you guys will get easily outbid by those prepared to work under the table.

Selwood or Deledio? Hmmm.

Personally I think given our exodus of former stars we should be looking at poaching other clubs young talent to add to Deledio.
I seriously doubt he's going anywhere & I certainly hope he isn't.

Mitch Brown, Jokely Nicholls and Danny Meyer?
No thanks, not after the Ottens stuffup.(oops that got thru the swear filter ;D)

Bird in the hand bobby. Bird in the hand.

Re: Is anyone else concerned?

Hutchy just said Lids has been fielding other offers but is expected to sign a new 3 year deal soon. I think we can just about put this to rest.

It was pure hypothetical mate. If he requested to go to West Coast what would you want?

Also have you not seen Mitch Brown play? What has JON and Danny Meyer got to do with it?

Bird in the hand, but what if that bird wants to fly?

Anyway as I have said earlier on in the piece, it will not happen and Deledio will sign a new deal with us.

Yeah it's not uncommon for a talented in demand player to field a few offers just to make sure his club pays him what he's worth [remember Jon Brown last year?] - it's just uncommon for us to have a talented in demand player. It's actually a nice change of pace!

Original senario was that Deledio wanted to come to Melbourne. So the choice would not be Deledio's. it choice would be Richmond's. Either accept what was on the table, even though it was a substandards offer, or let him walk for nothing.

remember, this is the last uncompromised draft for some time and pick 18 will be worth quite a bit.

pick 18 is worth rubbish, and Rivers not much more. I'd rather deal with Carlton, the team he supported as a kid, the team who can make him an environmental ambassador, and the team who can probably delivery him a flag. And it would be like passing a kidney stone agreeing to that, but its better than 18 and Rivers

I would want more than your hypothetical, otherwise we reselect him in the PSD or he can go to Melbourne and cop abuse everywhere he goes.

Agree. I don't even like discussing the possibility of him leaving TBH.

i dont think money the issue. the issue is weather he sees himself playing finals at richmond. lets face it doesnt matter where he goes richmond ess carlton geelong he will be well remunerated.

the way i see it deledio will be waiting until at least 28 before an opportunity to play in a gf arises if at all. if he sees it that way he may wll ask to go. after all we play footy for one reason only.

Can't agree with you there Claw. Whilst everyone wants to play in a premiersup side, very few leave a club to achieve it. Out of the 100's of players on AFL lists, how many truly leave for the opportunity to win a premiership elsewhere? Buckley yes (didn't happen), Nathan Brown yes (didnt happen).

It's very difficult to leave a place you have grown up in, have mates at etc.

He'll stay and I hope he does. Lids will be a multiple B&F winner. He's a star.

Re: Is anyone else concerned?

Demons could offer him a Captain/Coach position. To outplay any Carlton offer
