David Astbury, Thank You

Good to see him trying hard. Looks a lot more mobile than last season and hopefully can strengthen his position with solid games.

Good that he tries hard but he's not up to it. Not good enough.

Had a great 1st season. Injury plagued in the last three. Needs time to improve.

He's a plodder TF. Tries hard but ultimately not good enough.

Richmond's defence, tallwise, depends on Chaplin and Rance, neither of whom is aerially strong, that is to say they can't get air and influence the ball at its premium position. They can't jump, reach and spoil.

They can spoil, and well, but they do it's from a grounded position by blocking and reading. Joel Bowden was a genius at this.

They are vulnerable to very high ball. Support from a pacy #3 back who can cover ground and get air is crucial to this structure.

Ass-burgers is not good one on one. But he can cover ground and get air. He's no Grimey but his best use is Deledio class. No, really.

Not a physicallly strong player but brave and an awesome user. Can be coached. Five games in the bag easy.

Glamourous, slow, busy, lofty, determined, NQR. Structurally any coach would dream of a fit Grimes but he'll rarely be fit.

Seriously Astbury is just a nothing player. A really bad sign when he gets a game. Makes way too many mistakes and is not going to improve to a great degree.

I am an Astbury fan

Some of his desperate acts last night, specially in the last qtr were pretty good. Nothing you can do when the teams press is broken and the opposition is streaming down the ground into an open forward line.

I was at the game and thought he was pretty good overall. Tried hard. Our worst defender on the night IMO was Chaplin.

I'm not a big fan of Astbury. Never have been. That said, i would give him a few games to settle and show his wares. If he's not showing signs of consistent improvement over the next few rounds then I think he should be pushed back to the VFL team.
In 2014 the Tigers cannot afford to keep selecting players who aren' producing the goods on match day.

Needs to be traded. Its a disgrace that they gave him the No.12 jumper.

Agree that Astbury wasn't the worst and that Chaplin had an ordinary night for most of it - seemed to take time to get the read of the game, perhaps he was trying too hard mentally and consequently not good in the contest. The responsibility of leadership maybe, don't know, but something slowed Chaplin's thinking last night.

Dyer're assessment of Astbury seems pretty accurate. Nothing others haven't said in pieces but he distilled it all well about Dave. Could he be a better tall winger - perhaps his pace is not there and we have better. Not sure where he fits other than forward ala Dunstan tbh.

I think Astbury had a better game overall than Chaplain and Rance last night.

Still heaps of room to improve though.

With a fit Grimes playing a good game in the VFL will be interesting to see which way we go for our next match.

I don't think Astbury is in the best 22. He tries, but just too slow in every way, probably a gun VFL player.

I reckon Dave could be a good finals player. has little regard for his personal safety and seems cool in a crisis. certainly not in our 5 worst last night.

We aren't missing Rance at all with Astbury playing like he is.

He has come a long way since last year, the improvement is staggering. More confidence perhaps?
