David Astbury, Thank You

he'll still get some sort of match practice this week. If you think AFL clubs will let players who aren't injured or playing ones have 2 weekends in a row without any match practice then you're dreaming

Well they were supposed to play a scratch game last week but it was cancelled. I don't see how they can get any significant quality of match practise when there is a bye. Guess I must be dreaming. There are 4 byes in the season and 1 week for state games. It's just a very silly setup and totally unsuitable for AFL players.

I don't expect much from Astbury this year, whatever we get is a bonus. I do however expect a lot from him from 2013 onwards because I think this guy can play. He is another in the line of calm, composed and well skilled footballers we have been drafting in recent years.
The development of Astbury and Griffiths as KPP's to me is the most important key to us making a really major step in the competition (and/or Elton ).
By major step I mean as a real premiership contender in the next few years.

Agree Sin well said.

A lot of tyre pumping in this thread based on very little. He showed about as much as Post did in his first year and was pretty awful before the injury.

TBH is not writing him off, but ITBHO a lot of supporters are getting ahead of themselves.

Agree Tony. Was disappointing in defence last year despite the extra responsibility thrust on him.
I think he needs to aim at being a CHF. In competition with Elton.

I don't think anyone is saying that Astbury has done much of note so far. He shows promise and sometimes when you see a player show promise you say so. To me that's not getting ahead of myself, it's just expressing an opinion about the future of a young player.
Sometimes you just see something in a player.
FWIW I see much more in Astbury than Post. Astbury is a natural footballer who is much quicker in the mind on the football field than Post who is a good overhead mark but lacks the on field awareness that Astbury has. That assessment is based on what i have seen not necessarily on any game stats.

Showed alot more than Post in his first year. Also played many more games. Showed immense composure in his first year and had an average start in his 2nd year but only played 4 games. I will be very disappointed if Astbury can't become a permanent fixture as he has all the necessary tools.

A bit like Moore, the more games he misses the better he gets!!

The kid has ability but was terrible last year before he did his knee. He was slow, lacked aggression at the contest and generally looked lost ( I could be describing Posty)

Give the kid the rest of the year to find his feet again, get fit and plenty of game time at Coburg. He is no chance to play this year, so don't even worry about it.

David Astbury - Where will he fit in?

I hear David is now training well and with Coburg. I rate him but wonder where he will fit in when he is available? Our backs are starting to take shape so is he an alternative up forward?

Re: David Astbury - Where will he fit in?

It would be nice if he could develop into a solid KP swing man. Forward or back depending on where we want him for a particular match / match up / mid game tactical change.

I agree with this. And I also don't think he will see any AFL action this year.

Agree. Getting through to the end of the with no setbacks and a few games under his belt will stand him and us in good stead for next year.

Am hoping he can at least take Miller's spot over time. With TVs form issues and Millers limitations, too much has been left to Jack. Need someone like Astbury (or an in form Vickery) to take the pressure off, command the oppositions attention and hopefully be good for a goal or two a week.

Re: David Astbury - Where will he fit in?

I'm a little worried about his lack of pace. Not sure that the knee injury has helped on that front.
Looks 12 months away from complete recovery on yesterday's performance.

I was also concerned about his strength in one on one contests. Hopefully his time off has been spent building up core strength. I recokon if he gets that sorted, at 195cm, he will be ok.
