David Astbury, Thank You

Should not have played.

Could have, should have, but that applies to Dusty as well so we were two fit men down. The thing is could anyone name one player who would have been prepared to give up his spot in a prelim if he could still walk?

Personally I think that the club's doctor has got a lot to answer for regarding the ridiculous decision by the RFC to play Astbury in the PF. Hardwick admitted after the game that Astbury was in hospital on the day before the game and was put on a fluid drip to "get some fluids back into him". How many people with a cold or gastro end up in hospital?. Then Astbury apparently made a "miracle" recovery from his hospital bed in just 24 hours to enable him to undertake the daunting task of playing in the PF on a 7 foot tall athletic forward. The club comes first ahead of a player. It was clear early in the match that Astbury was right off his game. He looked like a guy lacking energy. He played like a guy who had been ill or was still ill. Surely the club doctor should have the final say on whether or not an ill player participates in a game. It appears that the RFC made a bad error of judgment in playing Astbury. In my opinion the RFC did not give enough respect to Collingwood or Mason Cox. As a result, all of us members/supporters have been let down. Garthwaite would not have changed the result of the game of course but he is very good competitor and he would have given it his desperate all against Mason Cox or any other opponent in the match.

Fair comment with the benefit of hindsight.
Be interesting to know how the discussion went about whether or not he could/should play.

That's selfish But understandable. That's why we have medical staff and coaches to assess the inputs and make decisions that might be harsh from an invividuals perspective but the right one from the teams point of view. As I said on another thread, if you know you aren't right doesn't a team player put his hand up and say so?

But we conveniently forget (or don’t know of) all the other times players have played injured in finals but blitz ie Stevie J in the 2011 GF.

What about same player Prelim 2017...

They played like they had all been in hospital the day before. Unfortunately, only Dave can use it as a legitimate excuse.

Are you sure? Not saying they were all in hospital. But there looked like something was going through the team judging their energy levels.

I too thought that but then I recognised it as just looking for excuses and the quintessential losers lament.

I understand Dave more than Dusty in that he was unlikely to exacerbate the injury for next week.

On the other hand I don't get why we were playing four tall backs against Collingwood they only have one tall forward. We have one tall foward and Collingwood played one tall back. It worked.

If Dave was dodgey it was a good opportunity to scale down and add some mobility. Problem is who, Markov? Moore? Balta.

I reckon Broad has been playing injured for 6 weeks. How desparate were we? Surely a good opporunity to try Balta or Moore down back.

I don’t have the heart to watch it again but there was an early two on one where short went front and square clearly expecting Dave to come from behind to spoil or mark. Lacking energy Dave watched shorty get out marked once he realised Dave wasn’t going. Clearly gastro related - he looked glazed over.

With the early scoreboard pressure we lost our way mentally as Dimma and Cotch said post match. Who knows how it would have played out... but was definitely worth a couple of goals.

Not astbury's fault. Short stood there and watched Milocheck take the mark.
I lost count how plays short was involved in that turned into Collingwood goals.
The fumble that turned into Mayne hitting Varcoe on the lead.
When he sat and watched Sidebottom for 3 hours, refusing to tackle him, then Sidebottom hit Crisp.
Short was a disaster

Don't disagree on the overall assessment zipps, he didn't acquit himself well in the finals at all, but when I saw the replay live it was an easy spoil for Astbury on that one.

The hospital episode would've been voluntary to speed up recovery, not a sign of severity. Agree we disrespected Collingwood with our reckless attitude towards selecting unfit players.

They should stick to the H&A balance of managing less than 100% fit players because that system works extremely well and is predictable. Throw the medical books out the window for a final and this is what you get. Happens every year with multiple clubs but nobody learns.

They believe you can just willpower yourself to perform, which is a great belief, but the club doctor is the one person responsible for protecting them from their own delusional but tough beliefs.

Did Dave actually successfully execute a spoil on Friday night?

Shouldn't have played.

Dunno but definitely didn't lay a tackle. But neither did McIntosh or Houli. At least Dave had an excuse.
