David Astbury, Thank You

Yes, but my point is the player will do whatever he can to convince the medical team he is fit to play. If the medicos are unable to say categorically one way or another then you're left with the player

It's not categorical though, it's a gradient of how impeded they'll be and that's the point.

You can't go into finals with the attitude that it's okay to play impeded players. History is very clear about this and it clearly happened to us last night, I don't know why you're arguing.

History shows players who were underdone and failed. History doesn't show you which players went in underdone and did well. Plenty of anecdotal evidence of players taking the field with broken bones (ribs is common). The lesser Riewoldt just this week said he was in hospital in the week leading up to one of the Saints grand finals.

It's a judgement call at the time. In hindsight it's a no brainer.

Re: David "Dave" Astbury

Should have stayed in bed. Along with all his back line mates (with the possible exception of Grimes) he was horrible.

Garth should have played. Probably wouldn't have made a great difference but at least he would have competed.

Garth & Bellis in for Dave & Dusty. Not sure it would have made a difference but would have given us a small excuse.

True you don't see when it pays off, but I still think it's pretty clear there's a balance, and that balance is generally handled very well in H&A matches. In big finals, the balance goes out the window and clubs patch up their players to play through anything, which is time and time again seems to be highlighted as the wrong attitude. It's sheer arrogance to think a war can be won with broken soldiers.

We spent all year getting the balance right medically and then we threw the book out the window for the prelim. We're better off just sticking to our predictable and established H&A medical processes.

But we conveniently forget (or don’t know of) all the other times players have played injured in finals but blitz ie Stevie J in the 2011 GF.

Good point.
But think we were pushing it with two players not right.
We’ll learn from this.

Spot on - another lesson learned the hard way

Not sure that's right. I suspect Dusty played quite a number of games this year under duress when having a rest may have been a wise option.

Re: David "Dave" Astbury

Rediculous statement I’m making, however I think Dave will be under a bit of pressure next season in his key defensive role, not saying I want him out I can just see both Balta and Garthwaite making big steps over the pre season

It's not ridiculous. As players age others put pressure in their positions. Thats how you improve. Another guy progressing well is Miller.

Richmond with a fit dusty is way more threatening than a Richmond with a lame dusty.
If dusty wasn’t carrying an issue I reckon we’d be looking forward to WCE in 6 days.

I nearly mentioned Miller, from what I saw in the first 6 weeks to the last 6 weeks he was the biggest improver at the club

Might have been ok if it was only 2, but there were a raft of underdone, banged up players out there for the Tigers on Friday night.

Re: David "Dave" Astbury

If Garth and Miller come on enough to fill his spot, could we potentially play him as another tall forward that releases Nank in the ruck?

Personally I think he's too slow for a forward.

Agree. He's a KD or nothing. I'm happy to back him in, our D is still the best in the comp.

'Down the line Dave'.

Re: David "Dave" Astbury

Should have done the right thing by the team and stayed in bed. Poor and disappointing decision to put his hand up. We'll never know but there was/is a chance Garthwaite would have been a better contributor.
