David Astbury, Thank You

Not sure if this is right, but heard that there were others in the team with the gastro bug.

This!
I have heard murmerings about this too...... it would certainly explain the severe lack of run and chase, and lack of spread and energy by many players.

It doesn't take much for one or two faulty cogs in the machine to make everything go pear shaped in the heat of a finals battle.
Fellow defenders would have picked up pretty quickly that Astbury was right off.
That erodes much needed trust that our all conquering defence has been built on.
Suddenly everything starts to go wrong as players start second guessing themselves.
I reckon many times Rance for example found himself caught in no man's land trying to cover & create.

Great bloke but him and his mate Rance cost us the Prelim

No they didn't, we lost becuase we didn't get numbers around the ball like we usually do and our forward line couldn't score.

Agree. Jesus Christ would have had trouble curtailing Cox and De Goey given the volume of supply and lack of pressure thereon.

Had the unfortunate experience of watching all of Cox's 11 contested marks in the Prelim on social media today..
Dave was a complete liability after his illness that week sadly. Constantly trailing his taller opponent until we made the desperate moves later of trying Rance & Grimes on the gangly giant.
Cox's dominance in that game had so much to do with Dave. It was a combination of monumentally bad timing (illness), coupled with the incredulous decision to play him.
Result? Game over. :(

Yep should not have played.

Tigers went into that prelim with Astbury (gastro), Rance foot, Martin (leg), Cotchin (knee), Lambet (ankle), Graham(shoulder) and also queries on the fitness of both Broad and also Castagna.

You just cannot get away with that. The Astbury and Martin deficiencies alone were enough to hobble the side.

The Astbury illness gave them the momentum and the match.

Astbury was ordinary all year. Got found out on the biggest stage. No aggression or desperation to defend at all

The coaches and selection committee need to take the blame. Garth should have played. The coaches made some blunders that may have cost us the flag - the decisions to leave butler and lambert on the ground after their ankle injuries also contributed to our downfall.

What an absolute load of garbage , he was a lynch Pinto the best defence in the comp and was found out after failing to recover from a gastro that had him spend a night in hospital , shouldn’t have played but spare me from the bs he had an ordinary year , his numbers stack up as well as any chb going around

Astbury wasn't at his best but the midfield allowing them to kick to the ball to Cox's advantage certainly didn't help.

This is vital, a defence cannot be effective against good delivery from the midfield. Even if the mids are getting beaten, the defence has a chance if the opposing mids are under pressure and not able to pinpoint forward delivery. Collingwood were getting easy disposals in the centre and able to send the ball forward accurately to advantage.
