David Astbury, Thank You

Tross, *smile* n Grub have been excellent for us in defence. We'd be in serious strife if these three weren't playing as well as they are. Pity our forward n mid systems aren't working anywhere near as well as our backs.

Agree TM , a fit Conca, a dedicated Yarran and an injury free Deledio an we could have had the best back half in the comp 8-

Bring back Freddy Swift while you're at it. :rofl

Seriously though - Astbury is a contested marking beast. If we could afford to move him forward.......

Totally different marking forward to back I think TM , he's a back not a forward imho

Was played as a forward early in his career. Kicked Three (?) on debut IIRC

Astbury frustrates me more than any player at the club but credit where due, he was really solid in the contests yesterday.
More than turnover Kane Lambert (the new Mark Chaffey)? :cutelaugh

Yeah, more. Like McGuane used to, except he's the anti-McGuane. Where McGuane would take off like a headless chook without knowing what he was going to do, Dave ponders every disposal like a retirement planner.

i like him and works very well in backline!
just wish hardwick can work outside square and at times float him down foreward.

b2

That would take a modicem of football coaching courage

Reads the oncoming play well and has helped take some pressure off Ranch as has Grimes now that both have got some continuity in their football.

He's our strongest mark but when he does, time stands still. We need to get one of our few playmakers to run past him for the handball to speed up our transition out of defence.
Good point. I wonder if anyone else noticed how GWS deliberately left him alone in the back 50m when we had possession. He takes a mountain of time to dispose of the pill, invariably kicks it high down the line and turned it over five times yesterday - four directly to an unopposed GWS player.

Of course they would be less likely to tightly mark Astbury than other backline players, just like we would for certain backline players of opposition teams.

Like Grigg. Opposition clubs give him free reign.

Hmmm.

9 out of 10 in the air. Then the rest drops away. 5 out of 10 for speed, 4 out of 10 for quick ball movement, 4 out of 10 for kicking. v Adelaide was worried about playing the man rather than play to his strengths and go for his marks.

No team can have 2-3 Alex Rance's in the back line. He is doing well and just needs to keep plugging away at this weaknesses.

AA calculations so far but not getting any love from media outlets.

He along with Rance have kept us in games and if it were not for those two especially we would be in a worse position than where we find ourselves now.

Heaven forbid if we lost either of these two.

Our backline is the least of our concerns !!

Played well on the weekend. Playing to his strengths will limiting his weaknesses. We need to make easy opportunities for him (and drill them) as soon as he has taken a mark as he is neither skilled or quick at decision making
