David Astbury, Thank You

2 x very good games in a row.

Very important player when one considers our lack of KPP depth.

If Astbury, Rance or Riewoldt go down we are stuffed.

Last quarter. A Port player (?) puts his head over the ball and dribbles it looking to draw the sucker free. Assburgers skilfully bends around him and taps the ball deftly to an unmarked Brandon. (Brandon then hits Thunt who kicks to a Richmond player. Miracle!)

Dave is getting smarter.

I noticed that too Jack. Good play from the Ass. I though the Ellis was gonna stuff it up but all went well.

We have Elton.

His intercept marking is bordering on imperious.

It's also very obvious he has a lot of confidence back in his lateral movement. He favoured a lot of straight line running after coming off the last knee injury, which made it hard for him to stay with forwards who liked to zig and zag. Made him look slower than he really is.

But we're starting to see him move a lot more freely again, and already he looks quicker.

As for the decision making - I think that's just a function of how hard the rest of the team is working. Give him options, and he'll kick it to one of them. It's stagnant gameplay that messes with Dave's head - he works hard to get his hands on the ball, he hates giving it straight back.

Astbury is really going to benefit from having the extra 3rd tall in McIntosh as well.
Any high ball heading to Astbury and the "opposition monster" he plays on can now be spoiled by 3 guys if they are within 30m because Rance, Grimes and McIntosh are all way above average in speed for their height and can all spoil a 2m player comfortably as a 3rd man up due to their leap and reach.

If those 4 play together consistently we really should only get hurt by quality talls on the lead which will help us enormously in the Score Against column as their shots at goal will be further out and more angle.

Agree with all of this. And Astbury is the fittest he has ever been, which must give him confidence.

Dave Astbury will hopefully etch out a career like Geelong's Tom Lonergan

For almost 200 games, and after a host of injuries Lonergan plays on the best forward of the opposition most weeks, while players like Scarlett and Harry Taylor got all the kudos.

Criminally underrated, but an excellent team and role player.

Let it be so.

Looked good finally seemed to get some zing into his kicking which allowed the targeted player to get the ball and go rather than wait for it and movement get slowed down

Had lost hope for Astbury mainly because of injuries. But he's really finding that ability we knew he always had and showed off in glimpses early in his career.

He showed this promise in his first year. It's taken longer than expected and that's partly due to injuries, but we're now getting what we expected from Dave.

His debut game returned seven disposals, three marks, one tackle and three goals playing as a forward in a 55pt loss againt the demons.

He has been impressive. Dont want to rob defence but I would like to see him at CHF. Saw it one game for a quarter only last year and he was a real target and took some great big marks.

Yep like to see him forward too. Can take some nice grabs. Griff is not the answer

I'd love to see Griffiths switched to CHB for a bit too. There was a game in the VFL last season where he played there and absolutely dominated at CHB. Marked absolutely everything.
Saw him promoted to the seniors the following week where Dumma played him..forward. :spin

Played forward as a junior.
